Wanderlei Silva made his first public appearance since undergoing facial surgery when he cornered his pupil, Jorge Lopez, at last Saturday's Worlds Collide show in Nevada. Lopez took a unanimous decision over EliteXC veteran and Josh Barnett student Jaime Fletcher.

the doctor who did Nick Diaz and Marcus Davis' procedure wasn't the one that did that...

And he’s the pioneer of that groundbreaking procedure so no one else has mastered it except him…

there were also reports that he just had an operation on his deviated septum.. so i don’t know what’s real..

He’s been staying in brazil lately, so if he had that surgery for scar tissue, did he have it there? Cause that isn’t exactly the best place to get that kind of surgery..

Or is it true that he only had his septum worked? if it is, why does his entire face look different?

Im confused…

by Anton Tabuena on Aug 25, 2009 10:47 AM EDT reply actions

I had heard he had it all done at once.

  • shaved brow ridge
  • removed scar tissue and replaced with collagen
  • reset nose

by Steve4192 on Aug 25, 2009 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah, cause that's all the rumors floating around..

but this is the thing that makes it confusing:

Frank Stile, M.D., a Las Vegas-based plastic surgeon who pioneered the surgery and remains its only trained applicator, says he did not have a hand in crafting Silva’s newly smoothed brow.
.
“Neither he nor his agents has ever consulted me on his desire to have the procedure done,” Stile told ESPN.com. “My understanding is that he is, and has for some time, been in Brazil. He may be having the procedure done there. This is both very interesting and of great concern to me since I have pioneered this procedure and haven’t trained any other doctors on how to perform it safely.”
.
Being that Brazil is not exactly a hotbed of surgical innovation — if indeed Silva had any work done there — Stile is curious about the fighter’s results.

by Anton Tabuena on Aug 25, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Stile mainly wants to protect his reputation I think.

A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

by iiowyn on Aug 25, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

i read a feature on the procedure

and i think it’s really just him who has done it for fighters.. unless somehow Brazil has learned it quickly and properly, it might be something to worry about..

it looks like

he had some scar tissue around his eyes removed and his broken nose fixed. His nose looked like coutures before, and its way straighter now. He actually looks a lot like he did when he fought in pride, only older. I’m sure theres just some swelling that still needs to go down

by Austin Martin on Aug 25, 2009 11:04 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

gracie mag reported that he had his deviated septum fixed..

but the scar tissue guy (probably the only doctor who does the procedure) said he didn’t do that to wanderlei..

by Anton Tabuena on Aug 25, 2009 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah actually his eyes look no different

but his nose is fixed. It was completely jacked up before.

by Austin Martin on Aug 25, 2009 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s just typical doctor arrogance.
Once a procedure has been pioneered, it wouldnt take much for the rest of the field to catch up. We’re talking restorative/plastic surgery not brain surgery.

He looks like Joan Rivers during his first surgeries. It looks like he pulled back in forehead skin so his eyebrows and eyes kind of rise. Of course, that could be from removing scar tissue in areas.

I feel like thats just an illusion from his nose looking longer and more narrow, his head looks longer now.

is there any way we can get before/after pics of wanderlei?

and also, how about pics of couture from early in his career to now? because his nose got JACKED up

by Austin Martin on Aug 25, 2009 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

Wow, such disrespect.

Props to folks who can deal with seeing a picture of someone post-surgery like a grownup.

I'm glad someone made the point.

I hate coming across people commenting on how ugly someone is or weird looking, or how their physique is. Not every fighter looks like Wanderlei in terms of build, or is as polished looking as GSP or something. I really don’t care what someone looks like, theyre an effing fighter… get over it.. Plus he had to get the surgery, so the posts about him looking like sloth or joan rivers who had plastic surgery are just disrespectful.

by Austin Martin on Aug 25, 2009 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

If I got some facial surgery & looked WORSE, I would appreciate if someone pointed it out. He does have a very Joan Rivers-esque look now & it’s freaky. With the surgeries he was getting, I would think the doctor would make him look LESS LUMPY in the face like he used to be. Not transform him into a cat-faced stranger that I don’t recognize to be The Axe Murderer. It’s kind of sad.

I bet if you had surgery, you would hold the surgeon to a higher standard than this hack job. Stop being so damn sensitive!!

by frickshun on Aug 25, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions

i'm not being sensitive

but you’re implying Wand was a beauty queen before. That pic is from one angle, the others on Tatame don’t look that bad.

And it is absolutely not like he just plastic surgery, he got restorative surgery to fix problems.

by Austin Martin on Aug 25, 2009 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

No wonder he learned to fight.

by mythbuster on Aug 25, 2009 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s not sensitive versus insensitive. It’s adult vs. juvenile. Commenting candidly about changes to appearance have nothing to do with being a sophomoric raging prick.

surgery or not, he has always been a hard man to look at. He looks a little swollen, but not all that different. I think his look makes him more endearing as a fighter and makes his nickname fitting. I am immature and I admit that, but its not the worst thing in the world to be.

by szucconi on Aug 25, 2009 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

was looking forward to the Rumble Johnson fight man…. too bad

by cauliflower_ears on Aug 25, 2009 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions

He looks different, no question. But he looks more like a human right now. His old face used to disturb anyone not used to the axe murderer. Or you guys are talking about a picture I haven’t see.
Sloth? Lol, no.

You don't look like a Tanaka.

Wanderlei always had a prodigious brow ridge

That now appears to be mostly gone.

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

by cagefightonacid on Aug 25, 2009 3:11 PM EDT reply actions

I dont know what all the fuss is about. He looks fine. His face was so jacked up from his career, he was long overdue for some corrective surgery.

He looks fine to me...

I think he looks better… we will get used to it. The eyes really look a lot like Tito’s eyes in terms of shape and brow position now. I just hope it actually does help him out and not work against him somehow… he’s my favorite fighter!
