Quote of the Day: Keith Jardine Talks UFC 102 Opponent Thiago Silva, Lyoto Machida

Thiago-silva-espn_medium

What was so wrong about his game plan against Machida?
He just went out and wanted to put a lot of pressure on Machida. He's best in a scramble situation. He likes the fight going to the ground. He likes takedowns, defending takedowns, and clinching up. He likes knees and elbows; he likes that scramble situation, and he tried to force that on Machida, and Machida wasn't having none of it.

Is it safe to say that you want to keep this fight standing?

I like my chances standing with him, but I'm prepared. I think he's going to try force a takedown in this fight, and I'm prepared for that. I'm ready for both.

Keith Jardine talking to Ariel Helwani.

Jardine is ostensibly speaking solely about Silva's gameplan against Lyoto Machida, but he's also talking about every fight Silva is in. Thiago looks to force clinches and scrambles. Jardine clearly wants none of that. We'll see if the Techno Viking's awkward stand-up can flummox the brutish Silva as utterly as Machida's zen Karate game did.

interesting that no one cares about this fight

Thiago had quite a head of steam going in against Machida. He left that bout a ruined fighter apparently.

The problem might be that no one looks good against Jardine...

and its not because Jardine is great…its just that he is akward that no fight with him looks good. The fight always ends up being ugly.

Wanderlei Silva

looked real good.

True, so did Houston Alexander...

But unless someone Zulu’s him, it is usually a long awkard looking fight.

I knew there was someone else

But Thiago is tailor made to Zulu Jardine.

If Jardine fights like he did against Rampage,

i think he’d be good enough to embarrass thiago silva again.. I’ve always thought thiago’s stand-up is way overrated and that a good kickboxer could beat him easily..

Unless Jardine gets bum rushed in the first 10 secs again, i think he takes this easily..

Didn’t Thiago come into the UFC with much more of a BJJ pedigree?

by woomikee on Aug 25, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

yep.

and he has a pretty good ground game, i’ll give him that.. but people have been raving about his striking before he fought machida.. and i never thought it was impressive..

Jardine had Houston wobbled. I mean yeah Houston won and knocked him out in a spectacular fashion, but it was close to being the reverse.

Houston's jaw is half glass-half granite.

I love Houston. He gets knocked down so easily, but he recovers like an Apple laptop. Look at the the Sandman fight, he went limp but was ready to fight within the second.

No, Jardine IS great

I care about this fight. It is going to set the record for most knockdowns in a fight.

When Dempsey won the HW title, he knocked down his opponent 7 times in R1

I care about this fight more than I do about any of the others on this card (and that includes the other co-main). I like watching Jardine fight. I think others do too, but maybe Jardine fans are just a low-key and understated bunch…

Wanderlei looked pretty good…

No but seriously, imagine how much damage Silva did to Forrests reputation when a lesser clowning did so much damage to Thiago…

I don’t think that it was just Machida that hurt Thiago’s reputation, but just that he has not really beaten anyone past a mid-tier fighter. He needs to beat a top ten to prove his spot. Obviously, Thiago’s last fight was against Machida, and he lost, so a win is imperative for both to stay in the upper-tier of the division. I see Thiago winning this because his style of fighting (aggressive muay thai) has been a weakness of Jardine’s.

Jardine doesn’t rule out Techno VIking entrance:

"I think it’s funny, man. When people ask me on the street and stuff, I always them that, Yes, it was me, and it was a long time ago, and that kind of stuff. And I have a lot of fun with it, but I think I’d have to take some techno dance lessons first. I think I’d rather come out to … I like weird music, I’d rather use Tom Waits or something first. I don’t know, man, I don’t know. We’ll see. Maybe. I like practical jokes, so we’ll see what happens. I don’t know if they’ll let me fight in those shorts, though."

Is this a battle of who gets to be a gatekeeper at 205? Who is the keymaster? Anderson Silva?

by Bandaka on Aug 25, 2009 2:01 PM EDT reply actions

I hope thiago smashes jardine… thiago doesn’t lose my respect getting ko’d by the number 1 guy and I think jardine is the most overrated 205er
