Is UFC 102 a Must-Win Scenario for Brandon Vera?

Ufc65_6_vera_vs_mir_003_lrg1_mediumThe Mike Patt win likely bought him some cushion, but his return to the UFC in 2007 is still tainted with failed promise, miscalculations and missed opportunities:

"It wasn’t hard to drop to 205," said Vera. "The UFC asked me, I said yes, and I did it. I cut the weight. Cutting the weight was easy, but performing in that weight class was hard. That was the hardest part, performing at that weight when I haven’t cut in probably eight years."

The recipient of that weight cutting effort was Reese Andy, who was on a four fight win streak with his most recent win over Vera’s upcoming opponent, Krysztof Soszynski. The unanimous decision victory was bittersweet for Vera and contributed, however small, to the now existent doubt.

"That fight sucked; that fight sucked bad. My performance was horrible and it didn’t build any confidence (as a light heavyweight) at all."

Vera’s next loss to Keith Jardine didn’t help the confidence building factors any, either. Slowly the pressure began to mount again and his next bout against Mike Patt at UFC 96 in March became career judgment day. So when the second round came to a halt with the referee stopping Vera’s ferocious Muay Thai attack, the fight went down in the books as a TKO win, providing a little revenge towards the nameless, faceless multitude who doubted. After all, strip away the fight hype and media buzz, and Vera is still a lover that can be jilted when the recipients of his ardor don’t reciprocate.

"I guess I got tired of people guessing about me," he said. "I was tired of people wondering whether or not I’m good or whether or not I’m doing all right. They were wondering if I suck or not, and I just wanted to show everybody that I am who I am and that I’m still trying to hurt people."

Vera still faces three fundamental problems. First, he squandered part of his rising reputation as a finisher with technical, well-rounded skill after his long contract dispute with former manager Mark Dion kept him from using his momentum. Second, he returned ingloriously to the UFC by losing his undefeated status through two losses (albeit to top competition) at a weight class experts and fans alike thought didn't best meet his interests. Third, after finally making the leap to light heavyweight, Vera hasn't caught fire as some expected he would. He looked lackluster in his win over Reese Andy and unnecessarily hesitant in a close split decision loss to Keith Jardine. His win over Patt was both brutal and impressive, but that win only added to the rumblings that Vera looks unstoppable only when fighting less than championship material.

A win over Soszynski will likely do little to erase some of the more recent conceptions about Vera, but could be the catalyst for redevelopment. Should Vera prevail on Saturday, this will be the first time since returning the UFC in 2007 that he'll have put together back to back wins. More importantly, while Soszynski is only ranked #22 in the USA Today/SB Nation Consensus MMA Rankings, he is a credible challenger. Vera is arguably better in all departments than Soszynski, but the Team Quest fighter has much improved, less risky stand-up, respectable jiu-jitsu fundamentals, a clear edge in physical strength and a mental focus/confidence of the highest order borne out of fantastic performances against gradually tougher opposition often on short notice.

Whether or not the UFC cuts Vera should he lose at UFC 102 is impossible to know now. But unequivocally, Vera has more to lose than Soszynski. Where Saturday provides the opportunity to build some momentum for Vera's career and the opportunity to deliver on hype years in the making, a loss could do irreparable harm both to his image and future prospects of fighting for MMA's premier organization. Where Soszynski has built positive credit with his recent streak and has therefore given himself some breathing room, Vera has inherited frustration and fatigue with his slower development. And where Soszynski has very little expectations placed on him by fans and pundits, Vera is still burning under the sunlight of boastful proclamations of being the first UFC fighter to simultaneously wear heavyweight and light heavyweight belts.

The Mike Patt win partially wiped the slate clean. UFC 102 now presents the chance to Vera to alter the trajectory of his career at least for the immediate future. Whether he becomes the light heavyweight dynamo many he expect he can be or allows a more eager opponent to steal his thunder is up to him. Either way, Vera will not walk out of the cage on Saturday the same fighter that he walked in.

I wouldn’t call it a must win for him to stay in the UFC.

But it’s definitely a must win if he ever wants to get near title contention again. Lose this and he’ll likely have a ceiling of “mid-level journeyman” forever.

He won’t be cut because they won’t want Strikeforce to pick him up. But a loss makes him a definite gatekeeper at best.

And to think, if his manager didn’t cause problems, he would of fought Tim Sylvia for the HW Title in early 2007…. How times have changed….

also they won't cut him because of his heritage

always said but the UFC wants the filipino demographic

Completely agree plus

I think when the UFC makes its first foray into the Philippines, he’ll be either on the Main card or possible headliner.

They would be crazy to cut Vera. He’s still a popular dude and yeah, Strikeforce would sign him immediately.

I want to see him cut and face Mousasi for the SF LHW title.

That’ll be a very interesting fight IMO.

For me personally..

I thought he won the Jardine fight.. I thought Jardine got the first round, but the last 2 could have went either way..

Vera did look hesitant in that fight though.. Not afraid to engage, but afraid to really pull the trigger.. All his shot’s were basically to keep Jardine off him instead of going in for the kill like he used to.. But I still thought that fight could have gone either way & I thought Vera did a little more damage in the fight..

i hope brandon vera lives up to his own hype, he shows flashes of brilliance sometimes but i have a bad feeling it’s too little too late….

its funny k-sos said he felt like the new jardine

because the up and downs of vera’s career make him look more like jardine. K-sos may’ve jinxed himself into that pattern, i hope not though

I hope Vera wins this because....

I really want to see Vera fight Jon Jones!

Dont Believe The Hype

Vera is all bark no bite. He reminds me of one of the those school yard bullies who talks a lot of trash until, they meet someone his own size.

Basically, Vera can only whoop on competion of less caliber then himself. given the oppurtunity to fight top level 205’ers and he will crumbled like a deck of cards.

So if he loses he knows the UFC will show him the door and if he does win i expect to see him on the next under card or Fight Night.

Just for the record i was a Vera fan but after his losses which he loss with no heart and classless act of celebration after a win and his trash talk about him being the next champ has gotten old…I’m Filipino and i wish he would stop wearing those shorts with the Filipino flag on them…you misrepresent, your a fraud and a bust…

Sorry, got side tracked…yeah, he is a journey man at best…WAR Soszynski!!!!

wow

it’s like he never destroyed Frank Mir.
What a difference a couple of years makes.
I think the difference for Vera has been in his performance not in the level of competition. He looked equally shitty against Reese Andy, Tim Sylvia, and Keith Jardine.
Clearly the kid needs to get his head on straight, but the Patt fight was a key step in the right direction and I think he’ll return to form against Sos.
We’ll see.
Vera at his best should be a force at 205lbs.

I always look at how a fighter wins or loses not their record and I have to say the last fight at UFC 96 showed us nothing and he honestly didn’t look that spectacular in that fight either. I don’t like calling fighters cans, so I will say that patt was just put in to make Vera look good.

I honestly think this will be a close fight, I can see Krystoff taking him down and doing some GnP for 3 rounds to take a decision here.

I don’t think Soszynski has the wrestling ability to take Vera down. Vera has an extensive greco background (multiple time Olympic alternate I believe).

Vera was a crazy exciting fighter back when he took out Mir, Scherner and Silva. That layoff really did a number on him. I hope that fight with Patt woke him up.

Vera is also pretty good off his back. I thought he looked great against Patt, but I am referring more to his physique. I thought he looked lighter and faster than he did against Andy and Jardine. I’m hoping his lethargy previously is owed to weight cut issues.

With the 619 on your screen name, does that mean you are from San Diego, CA? Also, would you change your mind about Vera if he beats K-Sos convincingly?

by chrisbboy82 on Aug 24, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

San Diego Native

I am from San Diego and Native unlike Vera and the only way i would change my mind is if he beats a top 10.

by SouthEast619 on Aug 24, 2009 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm going to call it , and you're not going to like it, but.......

I think Vera wins this one, and I think that he will get a top ten after this. If his head is on right, then I think he can honestly beat a top ten. By the way, I too am Filipino from Laguna Niguel (South Orange County, CA).

I don’t think it is a must win scenario for Vera, I think it is a will win scenario.

by MMAussie on Aug 24, 2009 7:16 PM EDT reply actions

Even thought I’ve been disappointed by Vera for a while now, I still want to see him get back to form. Everybody jumped off the bandwagon so damn quick. I here a lot of hate for him. Maybe I’m a mark for guys like him who are great athletes w/a ton of potential.

On the other hand, I thought K-Sos was a joke & a journeyman when he got on TUF. But he looks like he continues to improve & surpass his potential. So he’s made me a bit of a fan for him. I still think he’s going to take a serious whooping in this fight….
