Paul Malignaggi robbed against Juan Diaz.

What's worse: incompetent MMA judges or corrupt boxing judges? Scott Christ explains what happened last night:

"After a fight that many felt he won, Malignaggi still had no beef with Juan Diaz. But his nightmares came true when he lost 115-113, 116-112 and a ridiculous 118-110 -- from Van Hoy -- on the scorecards.

From my view, Malignaggi (26-3, 5 KO) largely dominated the fight defensively and with speed. He looked like the vintage Malignaggi that was a legit contender at 140 pounds. Diaz (35-2, 17 KO) did survive a bad cut this time around, and didn't fight badly. But he had a horrible time closing distance on the longer, taller, quicker Malignaggi, and it was Paulie that made much of the fight go.

It was also, it should be noted, a highly-entertaining style collision between two guys that came to mix it up and win. They both needed it badly, and fought like it. But it was Malignaggi, in my opinion, that won the bout. And I'm not alone. Bad Left Hook scored it 116-112 for Paulie. HBO's Harold Lederman scored it 115-113 for Malignaggi."

Props to Malignaggi for preaching on that mic. Sounds like the kid fought his fucking heart out and got robbed, bad.

We think we have it bad in MMA, but it’s rare that something of this proportion happens in our sport, and we have to keep it that way…I don’t want to hear any MMA fighter have to say “I used to love this sport…”

He did. At worse it should have been a draw but he didn’t lose that fight. 118-110 was the most erroneous score I have ever heard.

He did…. he got robbed big time… I had the fight 116-112…It was a good fight… very entertaining. In some ways it reminded me of the Chris John- Rocky Juarez fight. Paulie boxed beautifully and Diaz landed some good power shots…The fact that one of the judges (from texas) scored it 118-110 for Diaz is criminal.. That guy should never be allowed to judge. The one suprise for me was that, the ref that i think is the worst in boxing (Lawrence Cole) who reffed the fight last night, actually didn’t do that bad of a job..

The judge...

was actually the one that Paulie said before the fight would rob him if he had the chance…so when it happened it was just kind of a “yeah, big shock there” moment.

a lot of boxing judges give rounds the the more aggressive fighter regardless of who is actually winning. He said he was back up boxing, which to an uneducated judge looks like retreading and not pressing. Same thing happens to defensive fighters, while they may be getting hit on the mits and not taking any damage, the judges see that as action tipping the scales to the other guy.

The same thing happens in mma when you have a wrestling guy on top of a jujitsu fighter on the bottom. The wrestler is trying not to get submitted, while the guy on the bottom is going to submissions. However, if he dosent get it, the man on top will win the round. (recent hughes serra fight)

I think this is why one judge gave Oscar DLH the fight against PBF.

I don’t know how some judges do it man, I don’t care how much I love my state and hometown…if a guy obviously won who was fighting a guy from my state, I couldn’t take the fight from him. Boxers work so hard to be able to get their conditioning, they give their blood sweat and tears for a good fight, and then you rob the guy of is victory? Thats money out of his pocket man…

Who let what boxing was get raped? I used to want to be a boxer when I was little, I have a soft spot for it even though I only give a damn about Pacman…but seeing this kinda stuff really leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Sounds like the kid fought his fucking heart out and got robbed, bad.

After watching the fight over at home on my DVR last night I still think Paulie got robbed. But, not from a victory becuase don’t think he won now. He got robbed of a fair shake from the get-go. Very close fight but yeah he himself needs to watch it over and probably won’t be so upset just because the HBOs HL gave him the fight. Malignaggi made himself a new fan in me though with his great performance and his comments.

1 Malignaggi 10-9
2 Diaz 10-9
3 Malignaggi 10-9
4 Diaz 10-9
5 Diaz 10-9
6 Diaz 10-9
7 Diaz 10-9
8 Diaz 10-9
9 Malignaggi 10-9
10 Malignaggi 10-9
11 Malignaggi 10-9
12 Diaz 10-9
115-113 Diaz.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a rematch at MSG in NYC. I still think Diaz would take it. Watching it live it looked really close but on TV you see a lot of those punches were not going through for Paulie.

He was bitching because he got robbed. He legitimately got ROBBED. Yes, he knew it was a possibility fighting a Texan in Texas…but he’s a gutsy guy who thought if he fought his fight it’d be impossible to take it away from him. He talked about how he knew he’d get robbed before the fight because he wanted the judges to feel extra pressure to be fair. It didn’t work and he got robbed.

Then why not clear up the matter of subjectivity? End the fight with a Knock Out. Then they will have no choice to give him the win. Are they not able to KO each other since they are lighter weight classes and have big gloves? I think not.

You shouldn’t HAVE to end a fight to win it. Thats the whole point.

And dude, this is boxing, it’s not like KO’s are the thing to look for, in a sport that focuses more on technique than anything else, two well trained fighters going the distance is not a shock.

Your whole opinion on this is really…ignorant.

Robbery

I saw this a few hours ago this morning. Malignaggi got ROBBED and made it known. He got a lotta guts to shout it out at Diaz’ hometown, but he blatantly got robbed.

At the same time, according to the numbers, Diaz landed more punches than Malignaggi. Thats not what I saw at all. He has a right to be angry. Only thing he can do is try to brush it off and “FINISH THE FIGHT!”

by ryanwk628 on Aug 24, 2009 8:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The blatant corruption of judges is one of the reasons I stopped watching boxing on a regular basis.

These kind of robberies happen all the time and no one does anything about it. And if the main event isn’t a robbery, it’s a mismatch. That’s the other reason I stopped watching.

Not sure how boxing purists can ignore this stuff when they criticize MMA.

Is Diaz a golden boy fighter?

by NinjaRehab on Aug 23, 2009 3:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes and yes.

Golden Boy has proven to be exactly just like the other promoters. Corrupt. Paul mentions that he gave in on a few things like location and weight limit in exchange for ring size and stuff like that. In the end, Golden Boy went against their word and Diaz basically got everything in his favor.

I’ve lol’ed at some of the people I know who thought what he said was unsportsmanlike. Number one, that was such blatant pandering to the local guy it’s not even funny, Paulie even called then out about that before the fight and they still did it. Boxing will never become truly relevant in my eyes until they clean shit like this iup.

And number two, he was a pissed off Italian guy who got a microphone put in his face just minutes after he got completely screwed over. What the hell did you think he was gonna say?

Doesn’t Malignaggi have a background in BJJ and Sambo? I wonder how he would do in MMA…

by Zack Gobie on Aug 23, 2009 3:30 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He has a chronically bad right hand that breaks easily. Smaller gloves wouldn’t help him there. He is fast as hell so he could pose problems if his jiu-jitsu is even relevant enough to keep him in fights.

Malignaggi had the judges in his pocket for his fight against Ngoudjo. Ngoudjo clearly should’ve won, Mali didn’t do a thing in the fight except hold.

Now, he gets a taste of his own medicine (his promoter’s medicine, let’s face it, promoters are responsible for that).

watching the re-run.i think that bisping hammill was an extremely close fight.
i still give hammill the slightest of nods.but hammill was gasses since the end of round one,he looked so awkward and gangly while bisping whethered the first round storm and looked sharper for the last 2 rounds(but hammil’s takedown still shud’ve given him the nod.)
but if u are in a 3 rnd fight in another guy’s hometown(where u give away the 2nd round) and look lethargic for 2/3 of the fight, you should definately not be surprised if you lose the fight.
only if hammil lost 30-27 in a unanimius decision like malignaggli lost 118-110 can u go batshit crazy.
