Is Krzysztof Soszynski the New Keith Jardine?
The other fight in your weight class on the UFC 102 card is Keith Jardine vs. Thiago Silva. How do you think that one goes?
That's going to be a great fight. I'm really looking forward to that fight.
I'm a big fan of Keith Jardine. I kind of look at myself as a Keith Jardine protege, sort of. Coming off The Ultimate Fighter Season 2 and not winning the show, but doing really, really well. I'm kind of the same way -- making to the semifinals and not winning, but doing well after getting into the UFC.
I really enjoy his style. He's very aggressive. Good kicks. He's always in there to fight.
I definitely think that Keith Jardine will win, but he has his hands full.
Now that you mention it, why do you think you've done so well in UFC after not winning The Ultimate Fighter?
Less pressure, I think. When you're in a fight, there's so much pressure on you by the UFC, by the media, by the fans. ... but I also learned from my stint in The Ultimate Fighter house.
The mental game is, I think, very important in this sport, and that's something that has really helped me to get to where I am today, is the fact that I'm so mentally strong where I used to be a really weak mental fighter.
I've changed over the course of some time in the last two years, where I'm just come into my own and everything's working out perfectly.
The ancient Greeks had it right: strong body, strong mind. For Soszynski, his physical health is important, but his career health is both a product and engine of positive self-messaging. And the catalyst for the change? It's hard to pinpoint without knowing him personally, but likely the double combo of wins over Primm and then Stann play pivotal roles. When the dots of training in the practice room are connected with the dots of wins over credible challengers in the world's premier MMA organization, the adjustments that happen to self-esteem and self-confidence can be striking.
However, I slightly disagree with his Soszynski's comparison to Jardine. The former IFL competitor/Team Quest fighter was well-regarded coming into the show, but also carried baggage of being inconsistent, reckless and not championship material. Jardine, by contrast, certainly had not achieved major acclaim, but did not have more negative perceptions to challenge. I mention that only to underscore just how notable Soszynski's post-TUF achievements have actually been.
I encourage you to read the entire interview. Soszynski goes into detail about his love of the kimura, talks about his background in professional wrestling and sizes up Brandon Vera with professionalism and candor. Excellent stuff.

holy shit cakes.
I didn’t know that my goal of being the first Filipino blogger in a major MMA site was already taken. hahaha! :)
so you were born and raised in the US, but both parents are Pinoy? so i’m guessing you also speak fluent tagalog?

Sadly, my Tagalog is practically non-existent, other than a few curses and random words. My Dad still calls me anak, though. Tagalog isn’t really their native tongue anyway, they actually grew up speaking Ilongo.

Jardine (the real one) beat Vera in a split decision at UFC 89.
I’m filipino (born in Dumaguete) but don’t speak bisaya.
Everybody can mostly speak english in Queens where I live.
I wanted Vera to verbally submit his originally scheduled opponent Mark Hamill.

I’m still not sold on him. If he wins and does so in impressive fashion at UFC 102, I might change my mind.

cool interview sergio. :)
I’ll tell you, Brandon, he’s got it all, man. He’s a great wrestler. He’s one of the best kickboxers, pound for pound, in the sport. And he’s got good jiu-jitsu. I expect him to do very well.
.
I’ll tell you, of all my wins, that’s one of the ones that’s not played up very much, but that’s the one that I probably have the most pride in.

I like K-Sos, but Vera looks like he’s got 205 down to a science, and is now able to work a better gameplan.
If Vera has his shit together, he’ll be impressive. If not, I don’t think he ever will.

This. I really hope K-Sos wins, but if Vera is on his game he’s just too fast for K-Sos who has kind of a plodding striking game.

K-Sos is so overrated it’s not even funny. Vera’s gonna bring him back down to earth.

I don’t think K Sos is really overrated, its not like everyone is saying he’s championship material, but Its not like Vera has been knocking fools out either. Its an interesting fight and the stakes are pretty high for both fighters. If K Sos wins, everyone will say Vera has never been good anyway, if Vera wins no doubt people will say K Sos wasn’t on his level in the first place.
by StevenGiles on Aug 23, 2009 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Talent-wise, Vera is on another level compared to K-Sos. I’m not going to say K-Sos has gotten lucky in the UFC so far, because he definitely earned those 3 wins, but his skills are limited, and Vera’s going to prove that. If K-Sos can beat Vera, I will swallow my words and show him some respect, because Brandon Vera is very, very good. By far the best 205er K-Sos has ever faced.
But I don’t see any way it could happen, and I have a lot of money on Vera at -175 that hopes I’m right about this.

K-Sos does have a lot of power as shown with some of his TUF KOs and his KO over Gusmao. Other than that, I don’t see much else that he has over Vera. There is always questions of Vera’s mental game though. I am going to pick Vera because he has more tools than K-Sos, and Vera at the top of his game can be very dangerous.
