Shoot Boxing "Girls S-Cup 2009" Results
Well, young Rena didn't get a chance to avenge her K-1 loss to Su Jeong Lim (who dropped her opening round bout to "V Hajime") but the Caesar Takeshi-trained phenom did score a pair of unanimous decisions and a late stoppage of JEWELS star Saori Ishioka in order to take home the first ever Girls S-Cup title in decisive fashion.
Elsewhere on the card, Hiroko destroyed the much smaller "Benkei" Aoki with knees from the clinch en route to a first-round TKO; prized JEWELS prospect Shizuka Sugiyama stayed undefeated with a win over Shoot Boxer Hitomi Sakamoto in the evening's only MMA fight; and there was no winner in the mixed exhibition bout (one round MMA, one round SB rules) between Megumi Fujii and the returning Hisae Watanabe.

No standing submissions achieved unfortunately.
I do hope the videos for this event trickle out to the web sooner rather than later.
It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.

Hitomi Sakamoto is a pretty young fighter currently based at AACC. I think joined from a karate gym a while back, but since she was in the last few years of high school, she didn’t really have time to commit to training (since I rarely ever see her there).
She is, if anything, quite tough though, which I suppose comes from her karate background, and her youth. Sugiyama had her on the run with postitional dominance and armbar after armbar, but Sakamoto gutted them all out. While I question why she should be fighting someone like Sugiyama who has more experience than she does, had Sakamoto come to the gym a little more often, I think she might have better prepared to not give up positions and submissions to Sugiyama like that.
As for the rest of the event, I thought it was pretty amazing that someone as short and lacking in striking skills as Mei “V-Hajime” Yamaguchi made it so far. She basically took Lim out with two throws and the help of a yellow card when Lim grabbed the ropes. Then in the semis, V took out Madoka Okada with three very nice suplexes, racking up 6 shoot points. Very awesome stuff.
Alas, Rena ruled the day however. Having seen V’s game of racking up shoot points to get to the final, she was prepared enough to keep her at bay with strikes in the final. I left halfway through the bout to go to Deep, but from what I saw that evening, V had a charming and inspired run toward the final. It was nice to see a straight jiujitsu girl do so well like that in SB.
The exhibition between Fujii and Watanabe was pretty much that—a not-so-serious exhibition. Since I was following Fujii around, taking notes for my MA thesis, I got to see her prepare backstage and all. During the intermission, before their exhibition, I got to watch them practicing spots and talking about all the stuff they were planning to show off.
When it came time to do the exhibition, it was pretty clear that Fujii had size and strength on Watanabe (naturally) in how she was basically picking her up and flinging her around. You can’t really read too much into it though, since I don’t think that Watanabe was really as invested in making the exhibition look as real as Fujii was. Watanabe was all smiles, having lots of fun, but that was about it—she was having fun while Fujii was looking to entertain the crowd.
