I thought BJ said he’ll never fight in the UK because noone buys the pay per views?

by SerraJitsu0876 on Aug 21, 2009 1:58 PM EDT reply actions

Has BJ ever actually said anything about not wanting to fight in Europe? The only source on this story that I can remember was this interview that Rome posted that was later retracted when he found out the source on the UG made the whole thing up.

I’m thinking Penn by UD or late (T)KO/ Sub.

by ElliotMatheny

Fucking sweet. Props to Dana for living up to his "We will put big fights on free tv" line. I was worried this could end up becoming a glorified fight night, but BJ/Diego should be a livewire of a fight.

by kyfm621

When and where is 105 taking place?

by xFenixKnightx

Jolly ole England.

by Ubernoober

Uh oh, BJ not gonna like that is he? Doesn’t he get PPV points? No PPV, no points…

by xFenixKnightx

Don’t get too excited everyone, it’s the Bleacher Report saying this.

by Ubernoober

I agree, but we kinda knew this fight was in the works. This give us an idea of when its happening. It the first I have heard a time frame so I ran with it.

by szucconi

I too have to be skeptical of this I thought that BJ has stated before that he would NOT fight on another UK card. Also, I am pretty surprised to see BJ take a fight so soon because he generally fights every six months. Furthermore, UFC 101 with BJ vs Florian as the main event reportedly did in the 800,000 buy range (I believe it was Meltzer who reported that). With that buyrate, one would think that a BJ Penn fight would be on a PPV main event because he was the main event of a PPV with a pretty large buyrate. It could happen, but I have my doubts.

You're so mean! Why must you quote me because now there is crow in my mouth.

I guess that I should be happy because Diego vs Penn is FREE now. I REALLY am cheering Kim to beat Hardy. I can see Kim taking Hardy down and just controlling him with the possibility of Kim taking Hardy’s back standing.

BJ might be getting a special bonus to help counterprogram Fedor.

by MMAEruption on Aug 21, 2009 2:03 PM EDT reply actions

is the UFC REALLY giving Michael Bisping, Denis Kang? Really?

by "Mr. NC-17" on Aug 21, 2009 2:04 PM EDT reply actions

Great match up, i see a 5 round war

by SouthAlaBamaRampage

Huh? Free TV? BJ has been against this.

by Blackout612

Remember when he said he is fighting for the fans now.. well i guess he is putting his money where his mouth is.

by SouthAlaBamaRampage

FREE TV GOLD!!!! On the same night as Cotto vs. Pacquiao. GENIUS!

by SSreporters

On that note… Cotto is going to get absolutely brutalized. I’m pretty sure I don’t need to watch Cotto get wrecked… I don’t need those nightmares.

Did the throw daze him at all or was it just the elbows? Can’t tell from that angle how hard his head hit.

I want to see Belcher take on Bisping but Kang is a decent choice. If he’s in shape, Stun Gun is going to murder Hardy.

by MMAEruption on Aug 21, 2009 2:05 PM EDT reply actions

These are some awesome fights. Kim vs. Hardy is a great match-up along with Bisping vs. Kang.

So far…not bad, if these fights pan out. BJ and Diego should put on a good main event, and I actually want to see Bisping vs. Kang, as well as Hardy vs. Stun Gun. I assume the other UK regulars like Taylor, Etim, and Davis will be on the card too. I wonder why the UFC’s not having Daley debut on this card?

by Hardcase on Aug 21, 2009 2:14 PM EDT reply actions

Daley stated he also wants to fight on this card, so maybe if Semtex wins we will get Semtex vs. Davis along with Brown vs Wilkes to round out the Main Card

by SouthAlaBamaRampage on Aug 21, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

My guess is that the main card will be rounded out by the the two TUF winners Wilks and Pearson. Davis either won’t be on a UK card for once or he’ll be in a prelim fight.

by rabrown on Aug 21, 2009 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Might as well add

That Sanchez vs. Penn will be another case of TUF alums failing in title fights.

Forrest, Serra, and Rashad you guys are probably it.

Sure

But Florian, Quarry (the first TUF to fight for a title), Forrest, Rashad, Serra, Cote (which is really unfair but he must be added) and Stevenson have a combined 3-7 record in title fights. You also got to consider one of those fights was Forrest vs. Rashad.

Sorry but historically TUF guys have not only lost in title fights several times but they’ve gotten their asses brutally kicked. Cote is the exception only because of the knee injury.

by SSreporters on Aug 21, 2009 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

TUF guys tend to get easier roads to title shots – fights they aren’t always ready for.

by MMAEruption on Aug 21, 2009 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Another fun fact

Penn’s last 3 title defenses (which includes Sanchez) are against TUF guys (Sanchez, Florian, Stevenson).

1. Nobody has been protected more in the UFC then Michael Bisping.

2. I really like Hardy/Kim. Both are 3-0 in the UFC, and it’s just a really solid match-up.

3. This card WITH Penn/Sanchez is very good. It basically makes the Bisping & Hardy fights as solid undercard stuff. Without Penn/Sanchez and with Bisping as the main event, it stink. Weird how one fight can change how a card looks, but it really does.

by AlwaysRelaxing on Aug 21, 2009 3:05 PM EDT reply actions

pitting him against Kang is hardly protecting him

Kang should be the favorite here.

I don't really agree

- Hamill gave him a beating (and won the fight morally)
- Evans had proven knockout power when he took that fight
- Leben knocks people out most of the time, Bisping just ran away from him
- Henderson almost took his head off (twice!)
- Kang is srs bizness too

Aside from Henderson I don’t think that Bisping has taken on an awful lot of high level contenders, but then since he’s proven to be exactly an elite fighter why should he be fighting elite competition? Dude is charismatic and mouthy which is a trait the British MMA fans love and that makes him a draw overseas. It doesn’t mean that he’s a great fighter (he certainly isn’t up there with the top 10) but if putting him as a co-main event gets asses in seats and does good on PPV who cares?

Oh, self-refuting comment

“if putting him as a co-main event gets asses in seats and does good on PPV who cares?”

And as long as the fight is entertaining. Kind of an important point.

they should put littl nog v.s luiz cane on this card to make it really interesting.

by SHOWMAN 56 on Aug 21, 2009 5:57 PM EDT reply actions

I was just thinking that would be my pick for Rogerio’s first UFC fight. It would be just over a month after his next fight at the Bitetti Combat show in Brazil, though.

by JRN on Aug 21, 2009 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

If it were to be on this card, that is.

by JRN on Aug 21, 2009 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Stun Gun/Hardy sucks.

I don’t want either guy to lose.

Expect Akiyama to be on this card if his eye heals up on schedule. He and Kim are training together at Team Cloud and Akiyama told the Korean press last week that they’d like to be on the same card.

by Chris Nelson on Aug 21, 2009 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

I think Joe Silva and the UFC would prefer to have them both fight on the same cards as much as possible. Both guys get major TV exposure in Korea and it helps with the expansion of the UFC in Asian markets.
