BJ Penn vs. Diego Sanchez and Michael Bisping vs. Denis Kang set for UFC 105 (Update)

Inside Fights gives a few updates on the UFC 105 card: 9jeptv_medium

A tipster has informed Inside Fights that Michael Bisping will meet Denis Kang at UFC 105. However, despite recent reports to the contrary, the fight will not serve as the main event of the evening.

...

A source within the UFC has confirmed to Inside Fights that BJ Penn will likely defend his lightweight title against Diego Sanchez in the main event of UFC 105.

The UK's biggest star Michael Bisping will try to bounce back of his knockout loss to Dan Henderson as he takes on Denis Kang. Everyone assumed that Bisping would headline the event against a guy like Wanderlei Silva, but now the plans have changes, and the fans have something even better, as BJ Penn defends his lightweight title against Diego Sanchez.

UFC 105 will be in the UK, a place that BJ Penn claimed he would never return to after his purse got affected by poor PPV buys. Some people think that he accepted the fight because the card will be shown to millions of people for free, making him an even bigger star which would also lead to better buys and bigger paydays in the future.

UPDATE from Fighters Only - the fight has been offered to Diego Sanchez:

A source close to Diego Sanchez has confirmed to Fighters Only that he has been offered a fight with BJ Penn at UFC 105... "The fight has been put on the table," the source said last night. "But nothing has been signed and nothing is confirmed at this stage."

UPDATE 2 - From Michael Bisping:

As reported on many websites, I may possibly be fighting Denis Kang at UFC 105. Normally I wouldn't mention anything on my site until I have confirmed it with the UFC, but as I mentioned its all over the internet.

Denis is a very experienced fighter who has fought, and beat some of thhe top names in the sport... I'm sure it would make for an exiting fight and we can make it a night to remember for the fans in Manchester.

If your reading this Denis, good luck in training and I look forward to meeting you in Manchester.

UPDATE 3 - Dave Meltzer says BJ Penn has accepted the fight:

B.J. Penn has agreed to face Diego Sanchez on 11/14 in Manchester, England for the UFC lightweight title.  This will be on Spike, not PPV.

Ohhhhhhh…Penn and Diego will be an incredible fight. Diego has totally upped his game since the weight change.
I hope Kang kicks the hell out of Bisping.

Agree

Sanchez>>>Florian, but I am worried about his lack of power at LW, no chance he beats BJ.

He probably isn’t going to win, but fights don’t have to be closely contested to be entertaining.

I thought BJ said after 81 that he would never fight outside the states again as he did not recieve any cut of ppv buys because the cards are shown for free????

Sometimes you wonder, do they understand the game of football? They have a few drinks and probably the prawn sandwiches, and they don't realise what's going on out on the pitch.

This sounds like too short of a break for BJ. I’ll believe it when UFC makes it official.

BJ did ask to fight again quickly.

Penn won’t fight overseas. PPV buys are horrible.

This is a free show. They probably offered him a flat amount that he liked.

This will be a great free card

it it all comes together like this. Im really rooting for Kang as i would like to see him get back to his winning ways. IMO if he could stop GIVING up submissions he could be a top 5 MW.

Did anyone else think bisping looked really small at 100???Even after the weight ins he looked the same, think that dolce diet had something to do with it

Apparently, this card is on Nov. 14. In other words, not only is the UFC looking to counterprogram the Mayweather and Marquez fight with UFC 103, they’re going head to head with Manny Pacquiao’s fight against Miguel Cotto with this card. Sorry Dana, I’m not going to miss Manny’s fight for anything. Even if I wanted to, I’m going to be in a house full of Filipinos who are going to kick my ass if I touch the remote.

i’ll watch the pacquiao telecast in the TV… it would be delayed because of all those ads, therefore i can watch both at home.. UFC at balls, then after it finishes, pacquiao’s fight will be shown already..

but yeah, im a big big MMA fan, but if i had to choose, i’m still picking pacquiao.

i will not ever miss a manny fight.. that’s blasphemy for filipinos hahaha.

I don’t know about the others, but the one thing that would drag me away is a live UFC in the phil.. otherwise, i’m never gonna miss that fight..

by Anton Tabuena on Aug 21, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Lets say Pacman Vs Mayweather was on one screen…

Lesnar Vs Fedor was on another…

They are both starting at the exact same time…

Which one do you watch?

by Ubernoober on Aug 22, 2009 1:00 AM EDT up reply actions

well in that scenario i have two screens so i watch both. haha.

but if i had to choose one, i’d watch Pacquiao…ill keep away from BE, and download the torrent of the entire UFC event later in the day. that way the UFC event would feel sorta kinda live since i haven’t been spoiled yet..

It’s almost impossible not to get spoiled when pacquiao fights here.. I usually go out and watch it live at viewing parties, but If i am watching the free slightly delayed telecast of manny at home, we turn off all the phones, no one listens to the radio or goes online, yet somehow, i still get spoiled..

I love Kang/Bisping

by Meshuggeth on Aug 22, 2009 2:20 AM EDT reply actions

they sholud add little nog on this card

they should match him against luiz cane and they we can have three big fights to look forward too. BJ Penn V.s Diego Sanchez
                          Bisping V.s Kang
Little Nog V.s Cane if they do it

by SHOWMAN 56 on Aug 22, 2009 9:24 AM EDT reply actions

Honestly

I have no idea how Bisping wins this fight. His lack of power will give Kang the ability to go forward fearlessly standing, and I say the wrestling/ JJ advantage goes to Denis as well.

It’s not that I don’t like Bisping, but I think Kang should be able to impose his will on Bisping

Bisping needs to get back to roots

Kickboxing. Bisping does well when he mixes his stand-up, the way he did with McCarthey and combined that with his defensive skills like he did with Leben. The problem with Hendo that Bisping was moving well and moving away, he was just throwing a jab. If Bisping can get his knees and kicks going he’ll do fine. But this is an intriguing match up and probably Bisping’s last at the top of the UFC heap if he loses.

by mason_beer on Aug 23, 2009 3:08 PM EDT reply actions

The problem with Hendo that Bisping was he was moving towards Dan’s right hand the whole time

fixed. :)

by Anton Tabuena on Aug 23, 2009 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

i think the reason Bisping was doing that was thats the only way he feels comfortable jabbing laterally. That needs to be fixed. But he could have helped himself from not getting his face removed from his head by being less jittery and jerky, and more fluid by creating a rhythm using his kickboxing.

by mason_beer on Aug 23, 2009 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Well

Circling left isn’t exactly a fatal misstep, but when you do circle towards the other guy’s power hand, you’re also supposed to back up. In fact, circling left can be used to open up some very good angles, and allow for a few good combos.

It just so happens that Bisping wasn’t circling left correctly. He also seemed like he was terrified right from the outset, after he felt Hendo’s power. Kind of a mismatch, in retrospect

you know when bisping is gonna lose is when he has those happy feet

when he fought henderson he kept his legs and feet moving in akward motions. he did it against matt hammil and if you saw that fight hammil won the entire fight except the last 45 seconds. the judges just gave it to him b/c it was in england. i knew i would win my bet with henderson when i saw bisping doing the same thing. if he has those happy feet against kang expect another loss. never been to england but i know those people bet alot. can they bet on mma? my guess is they can. b.j. penn all the way against diego but i’ll bet b.j. will only be a -160 favorite. alot of people know sanchez and i do respect him but his faces he makes and him always praising the lord after he beats the crap out of someone kinda cracks me up. penn wins with triangle choke in third round against the cage. peace!
