Dana White: Shane Carwin Hates Brock Lesnar

Shane-carwin_mediumThis is obviously dripping with promotional shtick, but it's worth acknowledging how the UFC will sell and position this fight. Once again, the MMA vs. pro wrestling undercurrent is in full effect:

"Brock is ready to go now and wants to fight," said White. "Carwin makes the most sense. He’s 11-0, and he’s been kicking the [expletive] out of everybody. [Gabriel] Gonzaga destroyed [Mirko] Cro Cop and he [Carwin] totally destroyed Gonzaga. Plus, he hates Brock Lesnar."

...

"The flipping off of the fans that just lined your pocket with millions of dollars is just lame," Carwin said in the week after UFC 100. "He may be a champion, but he has a long ways to go before he earns the respect of a champion. The fans are why we do this, Brock. This sport is not about fat paychecks and drama. It is about hard work and sacrifice for a shot to do what you did [that] night. It doesn’t matter how much money you make if you can’t earn your peers’ respect and the respect and love of the greatest sporting fans in the world."

Carwin also played the pro wrestling card – the profession Lesnar garnered celebrity status in between 2002-2004 – which seemed to get under Lesnar’s skin when played in prior matches by Heath Herring and Mir.

"We have no scripts in this sport, no predetermined earning amount and no predetermined outcomes," Carwin wrote. "It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it matters how you win or lose."

"He hates Brock Lesnar," said White. "It’s going to be two huge guys going at it. He’s got the power to knock anybody out and he’s got great wrestling too. He’s one of the guys that has the size to match up with Brock, too. This is one of those fights that could be wild. Someone’s going to get their head knocked off."

brock flipped off the crowd

because they were booing him after he just beat the hell out of murrrrrrrrrrr. I would flip them off too. Brock isn’t trying to play the heel, but fans are making him into one, and its unfortunate.

Unfortunate for shane too, because i think a well motivated, in shape brock is probably the single scariest thing to see inside an octagon

by Austin Martin on Aug 21, 2009 9:31 AM EDT reply actions

Really? I thought they were booing him for acting like a tool after he beat the hell out of Mir. I seem to remember some kind of “Who’s the F’Ing Man?” screams and some trash talking at Mir after Brock destroyed him.

Reasonable fans can disagree on whether the post fight antics were fine or not. But I’m fairly certain that the booing was not really related to Brock just winning the fight.

by Kierkegaard on Aug 21, 2009 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions

You're wrong

The arena was filled with boos waaay before the fight even started (as he was coming to the cage) and continued after he won. There’s only so much a person can take. So yea, I would have flipped them off too.

That could be because of the way he acted after the Herring fight too. And his rampant homophobia. And his uber-ego, And… well, you know what I’m saying.

Most UFC fighters are serious students of the game. The rest of my points remain tho.

But, and I don’t mean this offensively, I don’t blame you. There are so many Brock apologists here. I guess the guy is just charismatic and people want to like him despite all the negatives.

If even half of the standards that are applied to people like Mir and Bisping were also applied to Lesnar, he would be the most hated man but instead people defend him like he’s a little lamb being attacked by a pack of wolves. I don’t understand it, but I recognize the reality of it :)

As a decided not-fan of Brock I may be wearing colored glasses, but the pro-Brock contingent seems to contain a higher number of… younger and less polished internet users. If you see what I mean.

I’m not saying that everyone who likes Brock is a 16-year-old kid who thinks “LOLFAG” is a greeting, I’m just saying that it seems like more of those kids are his fans than his detractors. You know? But again – could just be my perspective.

Most UFC fighters are serious students of the game.

Maybe I should clarify what I meant by that. Too many Brock haters (no disrespect to you) seem to have this notion that he is simply in the UFC for the fame and the money (see Carwin’s “fat paycheck” comment) when the reality of it is he just wants to learn the game and fight. I would disagree that MOST UFC fighters are serious students of the game in the way that Lesnar has demonstrated.

I think what you are missing is that there is a MUCH more scrutinizing eye on Brock at ALL times unlike Mir or Bisping. Lesnar was counted out before he even started. When he lost to Mir the haters came out the woodworks claiming that he was a sham. When he came back and destroyed Herring the haters ignored the dominant performance and concentrated on the post fight antics. When he beat Randy and was respectful to him afterwards no one seemed to care.

Your argument seems to be “But he’s such a bad guy!” and quite frankly, there are a lot of douche bags in not only the UFC but in sports in general. They will always have fans who root for them despite the “negatives” and THAT is the reality of it. :)

seem to have this notion that he is simply in the UFC for the fame and the money

Could be because it was his first choice, after pro wrestling, pro football, pro wrestling in Japan and finally the UFC when they paid him enough. Not saying it’s true, just looks a lot like it.

I would disagree that MOST UFC fighters are serious students of the game in the way that Lesnar has demonstrated.

I would disagree with this extremely. I would say most top fighters are as serious, or more, than Brock. They have to be or they aren’t top anymore (exception: BJ Penn). Sanchez, GSP, Koschek.. the list can seriously go on of fighters who take it very seriously.

Lesnar was counted out before he even started.

Actually he tapped out 1:30 after he started. (I joke I joke… relax :) <— but it does kind of go to my point. That little comment would get people all sorts of upset, yet the many pages of people gleefully talking about how badly Mir and Bisping got beat up is fine. Brock is held to a much lower standard than those guys to some fans.

When he came back and destroyed Herring the haters ignored the dominant performance and concentrated on the post fight antics. When he beat Randy and was respectful to him afterwards no one seemed to care.

1: Post-Fighter Herring – That’s his own fault for acting that way. When you act like an ass, it tends to over shadow what you were doing before.
2: No one cared that he was respectful to Randy because thats how humans are supposed to act. Reminds me of a Chris Rock joke about people wanting credit for normal things. "I take care of my kids! “You’re supposed to take care of your kids. You want a cookie or something?”

Your argument seems to be "But he’s such a bad guy!" and quite frankly, there are a lot of douche bags in not only the UFC but in sports in general. They will always have fans who root for them despite the "negatives" and THAT is the reality of it. :)

When he came back and destroyed Herring the haters ignored the dominant performance and concentrated on the post fight antics.

Dominant performance? Well, in the same way that the first 3 rounds of Kenny holding BJ up against the cage was dominant. I mean, he did sit on the guy for 3 rounds and punch him in the face once.

I think the reason people concentrated on his asshole behavior is that the fight was – barring that first punch which got plenty of press – an absolute snoozefest. Yes?

Why I'm Rooting for B-Rock

I don’t think Shane is a bad person or anything but I hope Brock destroys him. That blog post after UFC 100 directed at B-Rock (as I will be calling him from now on) was absolute bullshit and some keyboard warrior shit if I’ve seen it. It was totally and blatantly in an effort to create some sort of false controversy between himself an B-Rock. First off, how many times has B-Rock said he doesn’t even have the interwebs in his home?? Everyone knows that. It’s been mentioned in behind the scenes coverage of his training as well as on countdowns. So, if Shane REALLY wanted to let B-Rock know how he felt about his performance maybe he should have chosen a way that would have actually gotten the message to him. And seriously?? B-Rock is doing it for the “fat paychecks”?? Christ.

There’s definitely some validity to the notion that Carwin wasn’t putting it on there in hopes that Brock would “see” it and that there was likely an air of promotion to doing it in the first place. But I don’t think you can pull the “keyboard warrior” card with a guy who is asking to get in there and fight and actually is doing it. Keyboard warriors are more like those of us on here who call out fighters knowing that we’ll never have to man up and face them inside the octagon.

Do you think Brock is unaware of it? I mean, I get that he may not have actually logged onto twitter and read it, but I can’t imagine in your wildest dreams that Brock hasn’t seen what Carwin said. And I can’t imagine that Carwin ever thought Brock would never see it.

Frankly, I thought it was absolutely right on at the time. And the fact that Carwin is stepping up to fight Lesnar immediately only further indicates to me that it’s about as far from a “keyboard warrior” moment as you can get. It’s not only not the right term for it, but it isn’t even close. And if you’re basing calling it “lame” on some notion that he said it without thinking it would get back to Brock, I can’t even fathom why you’d think that’s the case.

If there’s one thing that I feel pretty sure is accurate about Brock Lesnar it’s that he cares very much what other heavyweights who are potential opponents say about him. He appears to use it as motivation. It’s not a bad thing. But I’d bet you a donut that he knows exactly what Shane Carwin said about him after the Mir fight. And I wouldn’t be even the slightest bit surprised if Carwin expected it to get back to Brock.

You’ve said “keyboard warrior” was a bad choice of words. But you’re still arguing that Carwin was exactly that — posting something without thinking he’d actually have to back it up or that it would get back to the person he called out. I just really disagree with that characterization in this instance.

by Kierkegaard on Aug 21, 2009 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions

You said:

No doubt. That’s pretty obvious. But that’s not what I said. I said:

And you defined what a “keyboard warrior” was here:

Keyboard warriors are more like those of us on here who call out fighters knowing that we’ll never have to man up and face them inside the octagon.

I acknowledge it was the wrong term because what I was saying does not fit that definition, so how exactly am I “you’re still arguing that Carwin was exactly that”?

Of course he is going to get into the cage and “try” to back it up! That’s why the term “keyboard warrior” was not the right term. Christ…

Easy, tiger. :)

You’ve basically been arguing from the beginning here that Carwin was “lame” for calling Lesnar out in a way that, according to your first post in this little string, was not a way that would have actually gotten the message to Lesnar. You called him a keyboard warrior for that. Even though you’ve acknowledged that’s not the right word, you seem to still be arguing that Carwin said something without thinking it’d get back to Lesnar. That’s why I’m saying you seem to still be arguing he’s a keyboard warrior while also agreeing that’s not the right word.

Whatever you want to call it, I think it’s ridiculous to suggest that Carwin said (or typed) anything at all without knowing full well that Lesnar would find out about it or to suggest that Lesnar actually wouldn’t find out about it or that he doesn’t care what’s being said about him by other fighters. You seem to be clinging to your argument that Carwin didn’t think it’d get back to Lesnar.

Posting something on a blog post about someone who does not read blogs is very lame. But it’s not just that it was about B-Rock, it was directed TO him. I’m sure he will (or already has) hear(d) about it through the grapevine. But I just think it was such a LAME tactic. It got him (Carwin) exactly what he wanted. Maybe that’s part of why Carwin put it on twitter — to direct it right to Lesnar’s twitter account? I don’t know. But Carwin twitters quite a bit, so I guess I just figured he was putting his opinion out there, more so than deciding to use a blog post about someone who doesn’t read blogs, especially given that there is zero chance it wasn’t getting back to Lesnar very quickly.

Like you — can’t wait for November now.

Am I just imagining that there is a twitter account associated with lesnar? I’m not arguing that he personally twitters, but I’m fairly certain there is such an account. I can’t get on twitter at work, so I can’t verify what I’m thinking of exactly — but I think it’s something along the lines of “dcbrocklesnar” or something like that — anyone?

I disagree with the notion that Brock was never going to hear what Carwin said about him. Just cuz he has no Internet doesn’t mean that nobody around him does. Someone from his camp has a Twitter page, they most likely told him. If not the UFC will sure as hell bring it up when taping the Countdown show.

Yes-Brock hates the gays, was a WWE wrestler & has a penis tattoo on his chest & most definitely can take some lessons in personal behavior from Randy. the perfect bad guy is incredibly smart business move. All of his opponents will be the “good” guys trying to beat the “evil” WWE/gay bashing/rude/obtuse UFC undeserving champion. Vince McMahon could not have written a better script.

Tito was the 1st to play the true bad boy and he got rich from doing it. Brock plays the role 100x better than Tito ever could. Every single Brock fight will sell millions because everyone will be wanting to see him lose (or win in my case).

When it comes to business Brock and Dana are cut from the same cloth. Like it or not the succeed because of their drive and win at all cost attitude. Carwin is playing into the hype just like all the keyboard warriors. Mr Lesnar wins before the fight ever starts. Win or lose the saga will grow and gather steam.

Speaking of Tito...

…how is it that some people harp on Brock’s antics, but don’t bring up Tito’s? I mean, true, two wrongs don’t make a right, but Brock shooting the finger and dissing bud pales to Tito’s personalized T-shirts (I Killed Kenny; Guy Metzger is my bitch) crotch chops, and overall pre-fight trash talk.

And lest we forget the greatest boxer/self promoter of all time, Ali took his cues from pro wrestling as well. I don’t know if he loved Buddy Rose, but he sure as hell used him as inspiration. Carwin's comments

Putting a little heat on Carwin for a change – he says fighters ought to be fighting “for the fans.” “For the money?” Sure. “For the love of the game?” Why not. “To became the best?” I’ll take that too. But “for the fans?” Really?

Seems to me that’s a concern for the promotion, not the guys in the cage. But I guess that’s why Anderson Silva’s been getting so much heat (prior to Forrest).

Without the fans they wouldn’t have a place to fight.

Right...

…agreed. Just qualifying – behaving professionally in the cage (or at press conferences), being respectful of your opponent and not dismissng sponsors is what I expect from fighters, more-so than playing to fans when Rogan hands over the mic. Some of that folds into treating fans well. Putting butts in seats is really the promoter’s task.

by E_liminatorjr on Aug 21, 2009 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I see your point

I agree to a degree. In a perfect world that would be the case, but as we see it’s the fighters who bring the eyes who get the title shots and money. Justifiable or not, it’s the way it is. The promoter of course also has to, well, promote the show ;)

I just call it the “holy shit, that’s gonna leave a mark!”

c’mon, fedor v nog, he invented that shit. rua used all the time too. the only thing machida is adding is sniper rifles for arms.

So Machida made it effective =P

Lol. From what I know don’t be too surprised to see a head kick end thiagos night

And like I said a new bjj coach and some brown belts from black house have been working with Nate.

I know machida embarrassed rashad but Jacksons is going to have a successful end of 09. Except for carwin by the way since Jacksons has nobody who closely can imitate Brock Lesnar

You meant black belts from brown house…? :)

Jackson sounded so hopeless after the Rashad loss, it almost made me sad =(

why would anyone from black house help marq train?

by judonerd on Aug 21, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

That KO was effing phenominal

The room went from “Hey, Machida’s looking pretty good” to “WOAH!” very quickly.

One thing is certain for this fight-

no one can use the “Brock is just too big & that is why he won”. If he wins that is.

Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even when you win you are still retarded.

Absolutely

This is the first fight where he is facing a legit contender, IMO. This is the one I have been calling for (when they were going to feed him Nog or Couture) – so, the chips will fall where they fall.

by mythbuster on Aug 21, 2009 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe not the first legit contender,

but definitely the first where his size/strength difference to his opponent is not that great. Mir was still legit, but Randy was too small & too old.

hmmm

To be honest, I am split on whether I, personally, think Mir was a legit contender. Everything in me says no since he was expected to lose, but he did win that first fight easily so I should be saying yes.

It confuses me, but for sanity sake I will say that Mir was the closest to a legit contender than Lesnar has faced so far.

Also

I agree with you on Randy.

by mythbuster on Aug 21, 2009 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, Mir was for sure overmatched against Lesnar

but he did beat him once & he has the credentials so you kind of have to call him legit for that.

You know what, I really don’t like Broc Lesnar but I seriously hope Shane Carwin isn’t going to trash talk him like Mir did… If he does I’m gonna be cheering for Lesnar! Also, I don’t know why anyone was saying they expected Carwin to beat Cain Velasquez in their fight, cos Cain is a warrior and as legitimate a threat to Broc Lesnar that anyone – in fact I think he will be the first person to beat him. That guy is a warrior – to take a 1-2 flush in the face like he did of Knogo and do what he did is amazing!

Cain is listed at 240 lbs (here). Not saying he doesn’t have a chance, but we run into the same problem as the others. Carwin is the only person close to Brocks size and athleticism so far, and I think probably has the best chance to beat him.

by mythbuster on Aug 21, 2009 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Kongo lost that fight, if he hadn’t kept trying to take Cain down he would have beaten him badly. Kongo was connecting at will and wobbling him with almost every shot.

A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

It was a little shocking how much he hurt Cain with those shots. I guess it’s easy to forget that he’s a good striker since he decided to try to take everyone down.

by woomikee on Aug 21, 2009 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Kongo’s trainer said that he had only one sparing session before fight with Cain, and had no cardio-he clinched with Cain because he wanted to catch a breatch and rest…
His camp knew that he was unprepared, but it wasn’t their decision to take the fight…
