Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin at UFC 106

This Fan Post was promoted to the front page by Nick Thomas.

The UFC needed a big main event to headline with Tito Ortiz vs. Mark Coleman and it looks like Brock Lesnar (rank #2 by USA TODAY / SB Nation) vs. Shane Carwin (rank #7) is the answer. A fight between Lesnar vs. Carwin with a huge marketing push is guaranteed to bring tickets sales and pay per view buys.

With Shane Carwin out of his fight against Cain Velasquez in October, it's believed Cain Velasquez will get another opponent at UFC 104.

This is a smart move by the UFC - as it gives Cain Velasquez (rank #11) the ability to be used as a future contender.

Moreover, you have Randy (rank #6) vs. Nogueira (rank #5) at UFC 102 and Cro Cop (rank #15) vs. Junior dos Santos (rank #13) at UFC 103 in the waiting.

HT: MMA Madness

[UPDATE] Shane Carwin posted this on his website:

"Lots of talk going around right now. It seems to stem from a twitter post out of MN. I can't confirm or deny anything I can just tell you guys that I am training harder then ever and your support and loyalty will carry me through any fight they send my way. With you guys on my side I am ready for whatever happens. Stay tuned to the site or UFC.com for any official news about me."

[UPDATE] from Fightersonlymagazine.co.uk, Velasquez to fight winner of Lesnar vs. Carwin:

"Shane Carwin is fighting Brock Lesnar in a UFC heavyweight title battle at UFC 106, Fighters Only has been able to confirm."

"Fighters Only has since been able to contact a well-placed source who has confirmed that the bout is "definitely" on."

"The UFC scrapped the UFC 104 fight to retain both as viable contenders."

Is his fight with Cain off now or something?

by FlyByKnight on Aug 20, 2009 1:30 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Was wondering the same. I hadn’t heard anything about it but seems so.

by mythbuster on Aug 20, 2009 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It is being reported by mmamadness.com. It says the UFC changed courses on the Carwin vs Cain fight and that Cain is not injured or anything but just a business decision.
Weird and confusing

by SouthAlaBamaRampage on Aug 20, 2009 1:47 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

ohh ok

and actually it makes tons of sense. I said in another post the same – if they do Carwin vs Cain, then they lose one “undefeated contender” to fight Brock in the future. Marketing-wise it made more sense not to put the two guys against each other.

Glad they saw it the same way I did :)

And proves my point that Carwin didn’t NEED to fight Cain for a title shot.

Damn, that was lucky.

This is some crazy shit. And if this is true, I’m fully convinced Dana reads the BE. We’ve said lots of times on here that matching these 2 up was pretty bad since they were both marketable up and comers. By those 2 I mean velasquez and carwin.

Well who can they have Velasquez fight now if this is true???

by poundnground on Aug 20, 2009 2:46 AM EDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

The UFC

shouldn’t be babying it’s prospects. By all means, give them time to grow and whatnot, but at this point in time Velasquez/ Carwin just makes sense.

I disagree

Marketing for a HW fight it’s much better to have undefeated guys. Carwin vs Cain, one walks away with a loss.

by mythbuster on Aug 20, 2009 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's probably

the best fight they’ll be able to come up with. Not terrible, either, but I just don’t think that Carwin is particularly deserving of a title shot just yet. Honestly, his only win over top comp came over Gonzaga who is very inconsistent.

If true though, i’ll be thoroughly rooting for Shane against Honkey Kong.

Bad call IMO

I don’t think that a singular win over Gonzaga should be enough to merit a title shot for Carwin, and I would much rather see him fight Velasquez.

In the best of all worlds, it would play out like this: If Carwin would beat Velasquez impressively, then he gets the title shot; in the meantime, Nog/ Randy winner squares off with CC/ JDS winner for the next crack at the title. If Cain won, then Nog/ Randy winner gets the first title shot, and Cain gets the Crocop/ Dos Santos winner for the next shot.

I don’t know what they’re doing here, but this just messes it all up.

Don't even get me started on that.

But in all fairness, it was Randy who picked Lesnar for his homecoming fight. By all accounts (at the time) it should’ve been Werdum, but Randy wanted a big money fight, and also probably thought that he’d be taking Brock out before he was a more experienced, legitimate threat. It backfired, but still.

Also, far as I know the UFC has final decision on fights, not Couture.

But wouldn't you say...

That it’s likely Couture asked for B-Rock and thought, Shit we are going to make a TON of money off of this fight! Its not like he asked for Kongo or something…

by FlyByKnight on Aug 20, 2009 4:50 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If this does ring true, I like it. With all of the potential contenders tied up in fights for the next few months, Dana doesn’t want to let his biggest cash cow sit tight until 2010.

Couture and Nog are a week away from their fight, and after that who knows how long it’ll be till they are ready to take on Lesnar. Dos Santos and Cro Cop are at least one win away from being legit challengers, and with Cain’s showing against Kongo, he doesn’t seem like he’s quite ready to take on Brock yet.

That leaves Carwin, who certainly has the skill set and physical tools to be able to challenge Lesnar. Whether he has earned a shot or not is debatable, but the UFC definitely doesn’t want to shelve Brock until someone legitimizes themself. Carwin is the best choice at this point in time. He’ll no doubt bring an exciting fight, no matter how it turns out.

Yeah I would say carwin has the best chance of beating Brock and then Randy 2nd if he can confuse brock a little more on the feet (like Mir did).

Brock gets hit – especially in the transitions… and Carwin hits like a mofo. So if anyone’s got a chance its Carwin.

by mmalogic on Aug 20, 2009 8:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

randy

actually did a much better job on the feet than Mir, surprisingly. Randy cracked Brock with a couple of good shots and even put him on his back twice i think, maybe only once.

Carwin showed incredibly strength to get up to his feet with gonzaga on top, and then the arm punch knockout… I think if theres anyone that can counter Brock’s brute strength it will be Carwin

I don’t think Velasquez should be next. I really feel like the UFC has too much of a push to get people immediate title shots, instead of doing great matchups. I’d love to see Velasquez roll through some more mid tier HWs before his shot

personally i see none of the current LHW contenders beating Machida, I think if Couture beats Nog that he should be allowed to leapfrog. Rashad got owned, Rampage is no longer mobile and just waits for people to trade with him in the pocket, and Rua is not even going to last a round IMO.

However i think Couture v. Silva would be a massive draw

by amadeus on Aug 20, 2009 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can’t see Randy beating Silva or Machida. It would be the same problem that’s been discussed about Marquart or Maia – he would have to actually catch them to apply his wrestling, and there is no way he out strikes either of them.

i can’t see him beating lesnar either, so it’s a lesser of two evils thing in my mind. and that’s all assuming he beats nog, which i’m not convinced of.

You're going to see the vast difference in wrestling...

In this fight.. Carwin has a heavy hand, but is not as fast as Lesnar and his wrestling isn’t on par.. He was a junior college standout.. Not a division 1 standout..

Lesnar will keep his distance in the opening bell & throw a big right and follow it up with the shot that will put Carwin down on his back.. From there Carwin’s right hand wont be a factor.. He’ll smother Carwin and control him with ground and pound.. Carwin has never been outside the first round.. How’s his tank ?? Brock hit’s pretty damn hard too.. I think Brock will try to grind Carwin down with wrestling.. Carwin has the “punchers chance” & is a legit chance, but I dont expect Lesnar to stand in front of him.. He’s going to to push a pace that Carwin hasn’t had to deal with.. The reason Brock is so different isn’t his size or strength, it’s his ability to use utilize those advantages with agility and functionality.. He has a gas tank which is RARE for guys of his size.. He get’s tired, but he doesn’t “gas” .. Those are 2 different terms with 2 different meanings..

Carwin is exceptional because he has been the bigger guy in his previous fights. He hits hard and he hasn’t faced someone who could out muscle him, until now..

Brock by TKO round 2 maybe early in the 3rd.. Carwin gasses from being on his back for 2 rounds getting hammered..

by MMAuthority on Aug 20, 2009 10:05 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I also suspect Brock may have asked for this fight..

For all the garbage Carwin was talking about Brock.. It seem’s he goes right at the guys that do talking without hesitation..

I suspect they want to keep the momentum with Brock’s rising star and squeeze in another HUGE fight to counter Fedor’s SF debut.. I think Brock may have came out and said he’ll do it but probably asked directly for this match… It’s just a feeling I have about the whole situation..

Brock by TKO round 2 maybe early in the 3rd.. Carwin gasses from being on his back for 2 rounds getting hammered..

I second that prediction… but if anyone has a “punchers chance” it’s Carwin.

To me, if this is true, it’s a smart move by the UFC because it appears to be an attempt at removing Fedor from the #1 spot. Carwin is ranked in the top 10, and if Cain wins his next fight while Brock fights Carwin, he would break the top 10 too. That would be 2 top ten fighters for Brock to fight. And winning could effectively put Brock in the #1 spot. Risky move, but a good one.

Love him or hate him, Brock has made the heavyweight division EXCITING again! Even if it’s a heavyweight fight that doesn’t have Brock in it, it seems people are always speculating how would x fighter do against Brock if he had a title shot? I loved Randy as the Champion. I think he is an awesome guy, but I LOVE to hate Brock. I love to HATE the fact that I root for him even though he is a bit of a tool who got a title shot that he didn’t really deserve. I love especially love rooting for him in a room full of people hoping he gets destroyed. My feelings for Brock are obviously very complex, but I’m allowed to be indecisive right? ;)

It’s not that the other champs aren’t exciting… well… Silva was exciting against Forrest, let’s see if he can carry that into his next title defense. I love GSP but I don’t know… He doesn’t get as much blood pumping for me because he’s kind of boring. Not as a fighter per say, but you know. He gives canned answers at interviews. He doesn’t talk shit. Which is all very respectable, but I don’t know… it bores me a bit. I’m a big Machida fan, but what makes him exciting is his style and not necessarily HIM as a person. Even though I don’t like BJ, he is a HELL of a character whether rooting for or against him.

Wow… sorry for the rant… lol

Poor Carwin.....

I’m going to agree with an earlier post of Carwin gassing himself and then losing by stoppage in the 2nd round. People keep saying that Carwin has a punchers chance. He does. He definitely has power. Now people are forgetting the key to Brocks success. It’s his takedowns. When Brock sees that right coming, he is going to explode, shoot, and take carwin down. Once he gets on top, it’s a wrap! Carwin is a natural 260lbs while Brock walks at 290lbs. Aside from that, the speed factor goes to Brock, and the wrestling definitely goes to Lesnar.

I think the only way that someone could beat Lesnar is if they could stuff his takedowns. Now….who the hell is going to stuff his takedowns? He’s like freight train. I’m telling you….it just isn’t fair. Brocks size, speed, and athleticism is something straight out of a comic book.

First Mir said that he was “2 seconds away from catching Lesnar and beating him”, now he says that he is going to gain 30lbs to be heavier? lol Stupid idiot! Even if someone was Brocks size, which Carwin is the closest right now, they lack the speed, athletic ability, and just sheer brute power that Lesnar has.

I see Lesnar sitting a top of the HW division for a long time. Possibly becoming the most dominant HW champion of all time. I love how Lesnar wants to fight everyone. He is a murderer! He’s not afraid of anyone!

People talk about his inexperience…but look at Lesnars first 5 fights compared to Fedors. Lesnars is much more impressive. Lesnar is the real deal. Love him or hate him, you’ve got to respect him. He is a BEAST and he’s here to stay baby!!!

GO LESNAR!!!

After I saw the UFC on demand training schedule for Brock, he gained one fan. He’s the man, a putuporshutup fighter who wants to take on challenges and beat their heads in. No excuses about the Mir loss. Carwin though, is awesome and i don’t think i’ll be disappointed whoever wins this fight

Poor BRock

I see him getting brutally beaten for probably the first time ever in his life. He’s never been hit by someone with Carwin’s power (I honestly think Carwin knows HOW to strike better then Lesnar) and hits harder.

If he can manage to keep Brock form mounting him (it will be tough) I really like his chances of landing a huge shot that floors Lesnar and then a horrible ground beating to take place. The one thing about Carwins huge punches is that they are very, very accurate. Guy has a helluva chin, too

Are you kidding?

Gonzaga hits as hard as anyone in the sport. He didn’t get KO’d. He was wobbly for sure, but he didn’t get knocked out; I think a majority of the UFC’s HW’s would have been out cold from that shot

Thats a HUGE testimate to his chin.

What has Lesnar been hit with? I saw Mir II hit him with a couple of shots that Brock certainly felt. Didn’t rock him. Couture, never known as a major thumper (short of the shot he hit Tim Sylvia with) bloodied him up and stuned him a couple of times…neither of those guys hit like Carwin.

by ThomasJ on Aug 20, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not trying to compare Carwin's chin with Brock's

But to be fair, Brock admitted to getting rocked from the flying knee that Mir hit him with in their last fight.

And let’s be real. The difference between a “helluva chin” and a glass chin is pretty broad. I think Carwin falls somewhere in between. Maybe closer to the “helluva” end, but definitely not to that extreme.

I agree none of them hit like Carwin, but I would never say he has “a helluva chin”. I guess our definitions differ. I would say a guy has a “helluva chin” if he got hit like that and kept going without showing any signs of it affecting him. On the same vein, I would never say Cain has a “helluva” chin either. He didn’t get KO’d by Kongo, but he looked wobbly as hell when he ate those shots.

True

However we have NEVER seen Brock’s chin tested.

I see this playing out as a bunch of wrestling scrambles in the first, and a KO knee by Brock or a KO by punch for Carwin. Either way, I don’t see it leaving the first rnd.

I really like his chances going against Lesnar. I know Carwin certainly won’t be scared of him and argubaly hits harder.

If the fight goes to the floor you have to give the edge to Lesnar but Carwin is no slotch in wrestling. It’s just a matter of whether Carwin get get Brock’s big a** off of him. I’m not so sure he can so Carwin has to keep this one standing… I think Carwin will manage to do that and literally beat down Lesnar who will be out cold. (Ref’s will be told not to stop it early.)

LOL

You seriously overate Carwins wrestling and severely underestimate Brock’s wrestling..

Carwin is big & powerful but he is slow.. Mir & Couture are much faster than Carwin.. Brock made them look slow in comparison to his speed & agility..

Carwin is a meager junior college wrestler who’s never been tested by any legit wrestlers thus far. His size is similar to Lesnars (who by the way are not the “biggest” HW’s).. But there is a reason Brock was a NCAA Division 1 National Champ with a record of 106-5 in his 4 years.. Brock will put him on his back and push his tank.. Carwin I suspect has typical “big man” gas tank. He hasn’t been outside the first round and hasn’t had some one push him around yet.. Gonzaga took him down but it wasn’t like he did anything with it.. It was very early in the fight .. How’s Carwin going to react after the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th etc takedown ?? Not to mention how is he going to respond when his big right hand doesn’t work ?? He has the average punchers chance, but he isnt the “big bomber” of the HW division that anyone with wrestling would fear.. I would take Randy in a fight with Carwin too..

Carwin loses due to being overwhelmed by constant pressure and smothered on the ground.. Loses gas and Brock takes over his signature G&P to end it by late in the 2nd early 3rd..

by MMAuthority on Aug 20, 2009 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

While Carwin’s wrestling is not on the level of Lesnar’s, he was more than a meager juco wrestler.

Carwin was the NCAA division II runner up in 96 and 97 and was the champion in 1999

I have read this whole post and comments, and I have some stuff to throw in.

1. People questioning carwins gas tank are going to be proved wrong when carwin goes more then one round. Unfortunately I doubt this fight leaves 3 minutes to spare in the first round. Nut seriously each time I go up to Jacksons and I see Shane he is cardio training. He is a specimen simple as that. I doubt he gasses faster then Brock would and I love Brock.

2. Mir landed a huge knee square on Brock and Brock saw stars, to say his chin is in question still is also a bit off since Randy rocked him twice and couture might not be a ko artist but still has power, mir had lots of momentum in that knee. I think Brock can take a hit. Maybe not a full force carwin hit I mean who can but carwin also isn’t fast and as good of a wrestler.

3. Counter programming with free Brock Lesnar might put a stake in the heart of the marketing plan for fedor. If fedor gets out drawn by Brock head to head do you think its ever going to change? Fedor will fight a mid tier strikeforce hw in hopes fedor highlight reels him. If fedor goes 3 rounds decision with his first opponent then well that’s going to be a disaster.

4. Cain should fight a new hw, such as the Headhunter or Yvel if there signings are good to go. Cain has great wrestling and GnP sure but he needs to prove he can hang on his feet. Randy vs nog winner vs mirko vs dos Santos winner should set up next challenger for title. Except if its Randy, he doesn’t have the kind of time to be getting into tune up fights, he either super fights at 205 or hw

putting Yvel vs. Cain

would be a great step to build up Cain, not a good matchup for Gilbert though. Cain is a dominating wrestler and Yvel has very little defense, evidenced by his loss to Barnett

by amadeus on Aug 20, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea that fight would be bad news for Yvel and most likely a dominant GnP victory for Cain. Unfortunately for the fans the UFC knows this too and given their desire to have him fight the winner of Carwin-Lesnar it looks like they will probably do that.

Cardio training vs. resistance fight cardio is different...

I suspect you know the difference.. Also it should be pointed out that Brock has the resources to train with the best of the best big men out there.. He trains with current NCAA champs, olympic wrestlers, most men hovering the 300lbs mark and up.. He has no problems pushing them around for 30 minutes straight..

The huge difference is how you respond after that adrenaline dump and your real cardio comes into play.. We know Brock can sustain high output for at least 15 minutes in a real right.. That;s pushing his weight with the weight of another man 250+ lbs..

Carwin has one way to win this fight, by KO (TKO), catching Brock.. But outside of that Brock owns this fight all day long.. Carwin is the one that’s going to come rushing in trying to end it early.. Whats gonna happen if he cant land that big shot on Brock & gets taken down ??

I like seeing champions fight every 3 months

Did the UFC really think they would get Fedor and booked all the heavy weight fights accordingly? If you look at the schedule without Fedor being signed, Brock would wait until next year around February to defend his title.

Now we get to see Brock fight again. BJ said he wants to fight again in the next 2 months. Anderson Silva always comes out of his fight unscathed so he can fight again this year too.

by Bishman on Aug 20, 2009 1:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Anderson has fought the equivalent of one Wandy round of Wandy’s fights in terms of wear and tear in the ring.

by Dooda on Aug 20, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s mostly an issue of desperately needing something on top for Vegas in November. BJ doesn’t want to fight in Las Vegas, Anderson seems to want to wait until December, and neither of GSP’s contenders will be ready by that date.

That will be a huge card, Brock vs. Carwin and Tito vs. Coleman. They’re trying to line up a series of huge fights for the end of the year. Rampage-Rashad in Memphis, then probably new years will have GSP and Anderson fights.

Throw BJ-Diego and Randy/Nog’s next fight in there and you have a huge end of year.

I think it’s great. I personally think the only person who can beat Shane Carwin is Brock, maybe Cain, and very possibly Couture. So he should fight Brock right now, hopefully he’ll do really well and these giants will then be able to have a re-match sooner rather then later, unless of course one gets completely stomped but I doubt that’s going to happen. If Carwin loses then he’s two or three fights from a potential re-match, and if Brock loses he’s probably two fights from a re-match, depending on what the scene looks like at the time.

Brock/Carwin and Tito/Coleman

This very well could be the biggest fight in UFC history in terms of buys. We know that Brock draws very well and the casual fans love him or hate him but either way they buy. Especially after his antics at 100, people will want to see what he does next.

Now add the return of “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” and you have serious potential. Tito knows how to sell a fight and even in losing has drawn very well.

I am going out on a limb and saying we have a 2+ million buy card here. I know it is tough and that is a very large number but if anybody in the UFC can do it right now it is these two.

You missed Machida, and also Kimbo. Lesnar, Kimbo, Machida are the three biggest spikes in Google trends of anyone in the UFC, in that order.

A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

That being said....

Lesnar wins by TKO in round 2. Carwin has power, but lacks the tools that Lesnar has. I can’t wait to see all you who are on the Carwin Ban-waggon get pissed when Carwin gets taken down, smothered, and then pounded into submission. Brock is a smart fighter. He’s not a meat head like Wanderlei who goes in there trying to throw bombs with strikers like Rampage. Lesnar is going to be methodical in this fight and wait for an opening, just as he did in the MIr fight. Lesnar is really coming into his own. As he evolves, he is going to be even more terrifying to opponents. We might be looking at the new “Ground and pound” specialist! lol
