Jorge Santiago to Defend his Sengoku Middleweight Belt Against Kazuo Misaki?
Jorge Santiago was supposed to battle with Vitor Belfort, but the last minute cancellation of Affliction changed his plans. The top ranked middleweight talked to Tatame about his next move:
"With the end of the Affliction, it was more difficult my return to fight in the U.S. for now, because the other American events that were interested in my contract would require exclusivity, something I can’t because I still have contract with Sengoku
I’ll make my first defense of title, but my opponent wasn’t announced yet. We are waiting the result of the fight between Kazuhiro Nakamura and Kazuo Misaki... This fight will give the winner the right to fight me."
Sengoku IX recently ended with Kazuo Misaki choking out Kazuhiro Nakamura in the first round, and based on what Jorge Santiago said, we could be seeing him defend his Sengoku Middleweight Championship in a rematch against Misaki.
Jorge Santiago defeated Kazuo Misaki by Rear Naked Choke back when they first met on January.
UPDATE from Chris Nelson, apparently i'm wrong again:
The fight was scheduled to be a title eliminator bout to decide Santiago’s next contender, but Misaki has been placed on “indefinite suspension” by the Sengoku executive committee beginning immediately after this morning’s fight. Therefore, it was announced that only Nakamura would get a rematch with Santiago if he were to win. Misaki won’t be paid for last night’s fight either; his purse goes to charity.
Most are speculating that Misaki’ll come over to Strikeforce for a bit until the heat dies down and Sengoku reinstates him.

You should check out the podcast of the Jordan Breen show from last Friday. He had a long segment with Tony Loiseleur about Japaneses MMA. They talked a fair amount about the Misaki situation. It has to do with Misaki getting pulled over for talking on his cell phone and then fleeing the scene. The way such legal problems are viewed and dealt with in Japan is quite fascinating.
Fleeing the “scene of the crime” is bad, but the crime is talking on the cell phone!
Fascinatingly bizarre.
while driving
the statistics show pretty clearly that talking on a cell phone while driving is almost as dangerous as drinking and driving. Texting while driving is MORE dangerous than drinking and driving.
Either way you’re risking your life and the life of the other people on the road.

I agree that texting is dangerous...
But let’s not get carried away here. Most studies only quote texting as dangerous, not more than drinking and driving. The only “study” I know is the Car and Driver “test” which isn’t a real scientific study. They used two guys and they compared it to someone’s who’s at 0.08 legal limit. I can assure you that the legal limit is not where the majority of accidents happen. Most guys who get DUI is caught over the legal limit. Most guys who cause accidents are drunk beyond the legal limit.
While I agree that texting while driviing is dangerous, it is not more dangerous that drinking and driving. Let’s not get carried away here.
Josh Barnett being busted for steroids for a 3rd time…. Okay!!
Talking on cell phone while driving or smoking a little weed….. The Death Sentence.

Santiago got screwed worse than anyone on the Affliction card
He’s tied in to defend his Sengoku belt, so he can’t take any exclusive deals. He doesn’t get to fight Vitor. And now he has no challenger for his Sengoku title.
A month ago it looked like he had two high profile fights coming down the pike, now he’s in cold storage. What a drag.

Jorge Santiago needs to complete his Sengoku contract and get in the UFC or Strikeforce.
The Heavyweight, Light Heavyweight, & Middleweight scenes in both DREAm and Sengoku are just almost non-existent now. No real contenders should be fighting in those organizations. Even Welterweight is touch & go….
Jorge Santiago needs to complete his Sengoku contract and get in the UFC or Strikeforce.
Already saw him in the UFC… don’t think he’s quite ready to come back to the MW division in the UFC unless he’s prepared to be a human heavybag like he was before. Strikeforce is the best option for him… throw him in the MW Title tourney that SF will eventually have after they come to their senses and strip Cung Le of the belt.
