Quote of the Day: Erik Paulson Explains Brock Lesnar's Actions

Slideshow_1175710_045706_mma_ufc_100_nvlas202_medium

"Since the last fight Frank was talking crap on me, on Greg, his other coach, and said he’d actually forgot more jiu-jitsu than Brock’s ever learned and once he retired he wanted to be Brock’s coach...Brock said, ‘I’m not going to say anything because I don’t really know Frank but after my fists do the talking and I give him a beat down, I am going to give him a piece of my mind.’"

-- Erik Paulson, trainer to Brock Lesnar, explaining the reason for Lesnar's post-victory outburst against Frank Mir at UFC 100.

You can’t really blame Brock for what he did after the fight. Mir was talking an usually large amount of trash leading up to it, and a lot of people were hating on him for it. Brock said a few words here and there, but was mostly able to keep his cool in the shit-talking department. He’s a big angry dude, and I’m sure a lot of that stuff pissed him off. The only difference is he waited to dispense the hate till after he smashed Mir.

“You can’t really blame Brock for what he did after the fight.”

Yes, actually, I can.

“Brock said a few words here and there, but was mostly able to keep his cool in the shit-talking department.”

So because Mir was better at talking shit, we’re supposed to forgive Brock for being an ass after the fight?

Nope.. but we shouldn’t forgive Mir for being an ass before and after either..

Exactly, why is it ok for Mir to do it before but Brock can’t do it after? If Mir is so good at talking shit he better learn how to back it up a little better.

Because there’s the stuff OUTSIDE the ring, and there’s the stuff INSIDE the ring.

There are so many reasons that it’s hard to pick one out. How about this one:

This is their job. This is where these guys are supposed to stop having fun and start being serious. You HAVE to be in control of yourself in a fight because you honestly COULD KILL SOMEONE if you don’t know what you’re doing. This sport is dangerous enough as it is – but people acting out of control is just completely not cool.

Or, if you want my most immature response:

You know how you act at home when your mom forgets to clean your favorite Insane Clown Posse shirt and you have to wear your Green Lantern shirt instead? Now, would you throw a fit like that when you were at work? Because I’m here to tell you: at McDonald’s they expect you to act like a professional.

I still don't understand

why everyone got all pissy over Brocks antics at the end of the fight. Most people for some reason think it’s ok for Mir to get up after getting his ass whipped and charging at Lesnar like a drunken fool, that and what Lesnar said is light in comparison compared to what other fighters have done in the past, why is it all of a sudden a huge deal over a few words? And don’t give the WWE antics bullshit, because that’s just it, bullshit.

by proflex on Aug 2, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But, that's just it!

See, in the WWE. some love to hate the bad guy with a big yapper, and some love the bad guy because of his big yapper. And sometimes the “good guy” (Mir) has a big mouth as well, and those who love the bad guy with the big mouth will hate the good guy with a similar big mouth. So, the WWE antics transition nicely to UFC.

by NickPT on Aug 2, 2009 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

true

But it seems to me that there was a lot of hating on Lesnar for his post fight antics, other fighters have done the same or worse and no one seems to say anything about that. But all of a sudden a beast comes along, and dominates their hero and then Lesnar is the bad guy? Sorry I just don’t by into the hype either way.

by proflex on Aug 2, 2009 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Do you get that – regardless of his short record – he’s the heavyweight champ? What more does he need to do? What more needs saying? He just beat this guy’s ass – now he feels the need to insult him? Huh?

Brock confessed to being a sore loser – and we can all understand that. But what’s the point of being a sore winner?

you’re joking right, how many times has something been done by a winner of a fight that has been worse then Lensars actions, it’s happened, Diaz, BJ, Tito, and those are just the first three that come to mind. But Lesnar, the big bad meany says something to Mir directly and all of a sudden it’s bad for the sport. Give me a break. Lesnars actions where not the first of their kind, why kick up a fuss now, just because he’s the champ, because he used to be a professional wrestler, or is it by chance that because of his WWE experience a lot of people still don’t give him the credit he deserves? Yes he’s had 5 fights, look at the ones that he has won, every single fight he’s been more dominate then almost anyone other then Matt Hughes. Even the one he lost he was dominating for all but 20 seconds.

Okay, a) take a deep breath. Then, b) lay off the stream-of-consciousness writing style.

Paragraphs are your friend. Also: capital letters. Run-on sentences are not.

When you’ve got that mastered, look up “then/than” and “dominate/dominant.” I’ll wait here.

For the record: you’ll never see me complaining that somebody who got paid to be an actor shouldn’t be allowed to be a fighter. The only thing about his WWE work that bugs me is that people keep saying that he was a WWE Champ as though that was an actual contest that he won – it’s like saying that Morgan Freeman was President of the United States after Deep Impact.

do you have problems following stream of consciousness? As for grammar, this is the internet, not english class.

But what’s the point of being a sore winner?

That sure does sound like your complaining to me. I understand your stance on the WWE champ thing, it’s a farce. All I’m trying to say, and ever tried to say is this. Brocks antics are not the first time this has happened, nor are they the worst. But because Brock, former WWE champ, did it, it’s all of a sudden this huge issue deserving of massive amounts of attention, which is bullshit, if you don’t see it the same way, that’s fine, but you can’t deny that’s whats going on here.

BTW that last run on sentence was just for you ;)

by proflex on Aug 3, 2009 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What? Are you reading the actual things I’m writing? I didn’t say that I would never complain. I said I wouldn’t complain about him being in the WWE. And I’m not. What I’m complaining is the Heavyweight champ of the WORLD acting with less maturity than my 9-year-old.

Stay in school, kids.

It is fresh

The story has a publication date of Aug. 2. Yes, the fight and controversy happened a while ago, but this is fresh insight from one of Brock’s coaches in a new interview. Sometimes it is important to get distance from an event, as well as interview secondary sources, so that history will have the full story, rather than the “first draft” written by media in the immediate wake.

My orginal comment up there

was sarcastic. The only thing more tired than Fedor right now is Brock’s antics. We already knew one of the reasons Brock went off the deep end was because Frank talked a ton of shit. So this is basically confirmation from Paulson.

Mir sounded like a sore loser cause of his statements after the fight, but i'm glad he's giving brock his well deserved props now..
“I think I should respected the wrestling a little bit more. I really was under the impression that we would fight on our feet a little bit better. I thought he would avoid the ground with me and want to knock me out.”

“The times we were on our feet, I was more successful, but the bad news was that we were only on our feet for about 15 seconds in the round and a half that we fought. I got pretty much owned on the ground. I need to work more wrestling, and I also need to put on a little bit more size. I think 245 was a good weight as far as maybe everybody else in the heavyweight division, but fighting Brock, there was too much of a size difference, due to the fact that he had great technique also.”

“It wasn’t just because of his size that he was able to nullify my technique, but he used his size. He knew how to position his hips, and block my hips, and hold my arm. He did things that I didn’t really expect because of his reach. I think I went in with too much of a gameplan, and I wanted it to go one way, and I tried to force it that way.”

Heres the way I see it. People forget that Brock is a big ole’ country boy with a John Wayne toilet paper attitude…he don’t take no shit from nobody. Brock came into this fight angry, and it was obvious before the post fight antics even got started. Frank Mir talked alot of shit, alot of personal shit. He didn’t just say Brock was a bad fighter, thats normal…he made Brock out to be an idiot. I come from a family of big dumb country boys…you don’t say that kind of shit to them and expect the feud to be over after he smashes your grill in.

No doubt

I’ve said it before, but Dana was raving about how great it was in Minneapolis and how he loves it here, and many people say that the crowd was practically unparalleled in energy, noise and excitement. They better come back in the first half of 2010, and Brock deserves to have a defense here. The potential showdown with Carwin would be a good candidate for a return to Minneapolis.

I’ve heard this a few times, and I don’t really get it. He’s not going to be relegated to one location because people hate him there. You of all people should be wise to the fact that a lot of people love him, too. If the UFC designates him as a heel fighter, then we can start accusing them of having pro wrestling sensibilities.

It’s not about that. It’s about money. Everyone makes more money if Brock is fighting in Vegas. There will probably be another fight for him in Minnesota, but it would be silly to keep him out of the place where he could make the most money because they don’t want to officially call him a “heel.” Good vs evil is what sells.

by Phildo on Aug 2, 2009 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also

…not much of a sensible argument. The UFC can’t afford to oversaturate the Vegas market. It’s why they travel elsewhere, and when they do, they need to book fighters that the fans in those regions want to see. They have other fighters to headline cards in Vegas. There’s just no sense in saying that Brock has to be a Vegas headliner.

I’ve said this before, where does everyone get the idea that the UFC makes so much more money from a Vegas show? They do save on expenses from having to move all their equipment, rent hotel rooms for staff, etc. but as far as money they bring in Vegas isn’t that much different from Minnesota, Atlanta, or anywhere else. The UFC makes most of their money in PPV sales and people buying the show on tv don’t care if it’s in Vegas or Sandusky. They do tend to make a bit more on the live gate but it isn’t that much more since a place like the target center in Minnesota holds like 18 or 19,000 while Mandalay Bay holds 11,000 and MGM holds 14,000. The difference in
money isn’t so huge that it will prevent them from holding big events outside of vegas.

C'mon man

Every other home game for the last few years (outside of Packer games) has needed blackout deadline extensions and companies/ tv stations buying out the last few thousand tickets. They hardly even sold their tickets for their first home playoff game in a decade last year.

And I live in Duluth. Selfish? Yes.

by Lewish on Aug 2, 2009 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So what?

First of all, you’re talking about maybe four total games in two years. But that doesn’t mean a thing, because the fact still stands that they are sellouts. The Vikings are on a decade long sellout streak; no asterisk required. Your joke would make sense if you were talking about the T-wolves or something, but it just plain doesn’t work in this instance.

Also, it’s obvious you’re a Packers fan. Amirite?

sellouts in professional sports are relatively meaningless, especially in the NFL, when there is so much riding on them.

I’m sure that there have been times during that decade where either the TV station or the team themselves bought the last unsold tickets in order to get a “sellout” so that the game could be on TV.

Brock vs Favre

Favre accepts.

Then declines. Then accepts. Then declines. Then accepts, throws 3 TDs in an early season game, finishes with 15 picks and misses the playoffs, then declines again.

Unless someone calls him in November, then he may accept again.

No you're not.

Bears.
Born in Chi-town.
And good luck with Sagevaris Jackenfels.
And the crappiest stadium in the NFL.
Obviously I’ve struck a nerve, now I’ll dig.

Not really. I’m holding the NFC North crown..

Yeah, well they have Jay Cutler! And they only had to surrender 37 draft picks to get him.

I don’t think they’re actually going to let him kill me... And if he does kills me, book sales will really go up. Boom…win-win, bitch.- Forrest Griffin on Anderson Silva

The best part...

Bears fans talking shit about QB’s.

I am a 9ers fan and still have a Jon Randle Jersey…but get serious. Cutler >>>> Tarvaris

Sorry?

At which point did I argue I had the better QB? I know I don’t— I have the better team.

Also, +10 points for the Randle jersey.

"Bears fans talking shit about QB’s."

To me this inferred that you felt the Vikes were better at QB.

But yeah, I have rocked that Jersey whenever possible. Guy wasn’t to great vs. the run, but he’s one of the best Sack-artists in history.

No, no

I meant that Bears fans have long had terrible QB’s and have rarely had this luxury, but are now treating it as second nature.

I don't know about that...

I’d rather have Kyle Orton as my QB than Tavaris, maybe even Grossman who I really didn’t like.

I’d love to see him fight someone considered more threatening. Bahna would be a baptism by fire, but a guy like Bonnar could get him some much needed exposure and mainstream cred.

UFC in Minneapolis

I watched this from the press table and shook Brock’s massive paw after he got out of the cage and was walking back to the lockerroom. Amazing event, apeshit crowd … really opened my eyes to the difference between seeing it live vs. on TV (and how weird it is to watch the fight without commentary)

when it comes to flipping out the crowd, i say that crowd deserved it, being ufc 100 for all it was, an historic event for mma, but that rowdy crowd reminded me of brown vs faber 2, those jackasses didnt know who royce gracie was, the camera guy zoomed on royce for like 10 min to get a reaction from the crowd, but not even a single cheer! they started booing lesnar even before he flipped em, and wsup with the stand em up chants ? it wasnt like lesnar spent five rounds on the ground, and couldnt even finish the guy.

by realblood33 on Aug 2, 2009 2:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Thats due to the tremendous amount of ticket resellers who bought up the majority of tickets and sold them for way over face value. It priced a lot of actual UFC fans out and those tickets instead went to people that just wanted to be there for the event.

It happens all the time in L.A. at Laker games (and to a lesser extent USC games).

Um, no

I was at UFC 100 and I didn’t see Royce’s face on the big screen once. There was a lot to look at. The only time audience members actually look up to the big screen is to get a better view of the action, usually when the fighters are on the ground.

And the crowd was surprisingly supportive of ground fighting throughout the card. The only reason fans were booing and chanting for stand up in the Mir/Lesnar fight is they were desperate for Las Vegas native Mir to win.

Although it just looked bad and maaaaybe took it a little too far

but I always and will keep backing Lesnar up on the shit talk after the fight. Mir wouldn’t keep his mouth shut and did take it too far at times. His cocky ass got what he deserved and then bitched about it trying to act like a classy fighter.

by poundnground on Aug 2, 2009 2:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Did you even see the fight? Take a look at Alves’s face, I don’t know where you get that bullshit about causing no damage but you’re completely wrong.

GSP also knocked him down in the standup...

Twice, although one was a half takedown (Hit him in the face while he had caught a leg kick)

Also, the action was far more dynamic in the GSP fight. They were moving all over the cage, Alves kept fighting back to his feet etc.

Brock held Mir in one spot. Only thing moving was his right arm, and only about 10 inches. That’s all it took.

Coaches should be off limits

it’s like insulting a guy’s wife or mother. It makes otherwise sane people go berzerk. For this reason, I don’t blame Brock for his after-match pow-wow with Mir on the virtues of politeness. Also, I’m from Minnesota and the guys that run Brock’s gym are super nice and did not deserve Mir’s bashing. When you cross a line, don’t be surprised when somebody crosses one back.
