"Little Nog" UFC-Bound, Debut Expected This Fall

His twin brother, UFC heavyweight Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, hinted at it in a UFC 102 conference call this morning, but it now appears all but confirmed that the UFC is close to signing, or has already signed light heavyweight Antonio Rogerio Nogueira to a contract, with his debut happening by the end of the year.  MMA Weekly has the updated info:

"They’ve already talked to him, they’re dealing with my brother," said Antonio Rodrigo. "For sure he’s coming to the UFC." Antonio Rodrigo expected his brother to make his UFC debut by the end of the year, and expected an announcement from the promotion shortly.

MMAWeekly.com was later able to reach the Nogueira brothers' manager, Ed Soares, who fell short of saying that Antonio Rogerio would fight in the UFC, but did say, "We're in positive negotiations (with them)."

He also confirmed that a planned bout against Alex Stiebling on the Sept. 12 Bitetti Combat event in Brazil had been cancelled.

On Monday, Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz told MMAWeekly.com that Antonio Rogerio had not been signed to his promotion, and believed he was UFC bound.

Combining the excellent BJJ of his twin, with what some believe to be an even better standup game, "Little Nog" has racked up some very impressive wins over the years, including victories over: Dan Henderson, Kazushi Sakuraba, Alistair Overeem, Vladimir Matyushenko, Guy Mezger, Tsuyoshi Kohsaka, and Kazuhiro Nakamura.  Most recently, Nogueira submitted Dutch striker Dion Staring at a JungleFight event in May.

This signing sets up the dream fight that MMA fans have been waiting years for:

Mousasi versus Southworth for the StrikeForce light heavyweight title!

Cool. I’m excited to see him in the UFC.

Do people think this signing was motivated by the “war” with Strikeforce? Or did Zuffa decide to sign little Nog based on his accomplishments?

The UFC needs another top light heavyweight to win one, lose one, win one, lose one, win one, lose one…

In all seriousness, this is a good signing. The more quality fighters, the better. Now if only they’d go after some new lightweights…

I want to see Shogun-Rogerio II. Their first fight was freaking epic.

If Lyoto loses in his title match

but doesn’t suffer any bad injuries, then I think that fight very well could happen

you mean if Shogun loses, right? If Lyoto loses, then Shogun is champ, and there are alot of people in line ahead of Lil Nog for that.

I think he means somewhere down the line…

Haha yeah

that actually is what I mean.

If SHOGUN loses then maybe a rematch with Rogerio could happen.

Yeah but that was just dumb. Some things are just unexplainable.

He wanted to box. It had nothing to do with Soko

Though it would have been cool to see Nogueira/Mousasi, this is still very good news.

Maybe they’ll call him “Mini-tauro” Nogueira…

by madiq on Aug 18, 2009 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully they’ll do something like announce him as just Rogerio Nogueira, so casual fans don’t get confused as hell.

Hell no, hopefully now they can go with Big Nog and Little Nog because the UFC can recognize Big Nog has a brother.

You can’t expect most fans to understand two twin brothers with the same first name without being confused as hell.

Paul Waner and Lloyd Waner, some of the very few baseball people I have heard of.

That's different

At least they have different sounding. These two are twin brothers with the names Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira and Antonio Rogerio “Minotoro” Nogueira. You can’t see how this will befuddle non-hardcores?

Yeah, I was a bit befuddled. ; )

Just bill Rogerio as the one who didn’t get run over by a truck.
