Ishida didn’t whine or complain about his last loss to Mizuto Hirota, which most thought was a bullshit stoppage.

This type of thing seems pretty tough to prove after the fact, though.

by Chris Nelson on Aug 17, 2009 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Why not just institute a policy where all fighters are washed thoroughly by the athletic commission so that we don’t get any more of this bullshit. I have a feeling there are many more fighters out there who grease and get away with it… and while we’re at it how about weekly piss tests for 90 days leading up to a fight.. That’s the only way o get rid of these doubts

There is some stuff you can put on that really doesn’t even become slippery until you sweat.

Go watch the fight again. The compare it to the first. Ishida couldn’t gain any traction of Melendez’s body for their second fight. He even literally slid right off oh him while having back control.

I usually agree with you...

but to me it looked like great takedown defense, but I haven’t been able to watch it again. I’m not saying ishida is lying, I just think he’s wrong

Well word has it around the BJJ community and MMA that a few baths in warm water mixed with unscented mineral or baby oil the day of the fight will do just that, The oil will hold in your pores until you brake a sweat, GIL using the old oil of olay keys to Victory against Ichida

But don’t most if not all fighters build up a sweat in the dressing rooms intentionally to get their blood pumping and prepared. Wouldn’t it start doing it then or is it selective…

This shirt is "dry clean only", which means it's dirty.

by pandaboy99 on Aug 17, 2009 7:44 PM EDT reply actions

If they aren’t doing post fight inspections for greasing then they must be encouraging people to partake in this activity.

It is an easy 15 second test you can have the cutman just wipe their shoulders with their hand and if it feels like grease, guess what you are greasing.

Why they aren’t doing this is beyond me, and maybe they just don’t care.

I think they want to turn their back to this practice because it illegitimizes fighters, thereby illegitimizing the promotion, that’s why with the Gsp greasing he put 100% of the blame on the “rogue” cornerman and insisting gsp wasn’t in the know

by kanodogg on Aug 17, 2009 8:55 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I know that this is very difficult to prove. Having said that I think Ishida is a respectable fighter and his camp is a very solid camp. I am not saying Gilbert is any less respectable but I feel that this seems more legit than other incidents we have seen.

Is the answer a wipe down at the start of each round by an official?

oh yeah

like when GSP got caught on camera and the athletic commission had to charge into the ring and towel him off. Nothing legit about that.

If your talking about the Alves fight...

where there was a clump of grease on GSP, that was obviously an accident by the cut man and also why would he grease fighting Alves?? He wanted to take him down and keep him down. There was no threat of submission from Alves at all. It doesn’t make sense. GSP is a true champion and would never intentionally cheat.

by J_Maddux on Aug 17, 2009 8:49 PM EDT reply actions

GSP is a true champion and would never intentionally cheat.

Josh Barnett laughs at you. He beat Couture and became a true champion. Guess what? Intentionally cheated.

I’m not saying St. Pierre did, don’t worry.

How is GSP a true champion if he intentionally cheated? Same situation.

Just watched the fight again...

I will say the one thing I noticed was that Gilbert is noticeably more shiny on the shoulders and back at the beginning of round two than he is at the end of round one. Whether this is just from water or something else, who knows. Otherwise, I can’t see where Ishida was ever in a dominant enough position to definitively say that Melendez could have only escaped with the assistance of grease. But thanks to Showtime’s crappy between-rounds interviews, we don’t have a look at what (if anything) the Melendez corner was doing.

greasing is

So common in mma its so crazy some people here make it into a huge thing. If you trained in the gym I did, and were around the big name guys I’m occasionally around you would be speechless. I hate cheating, any form and I see it all the time. Steroids, greasing, etc is so commom amongst fighters, but mma forums are not even remotely aware of its severity.

Its like the mlb 5 years ago, basically the big name guys doing peds were 10 deep, now our whole generation of elite ball players have been exposed

Bill Douglas, Assistant Executive Officer of the California State Athletic Commission, on Monday informed MMAWeekly.com that Ishida’s camp issued a “verbal protest” about the alleged rule violation following the bout and was advised to file a formal appeal of the result.

According to Douglas, Ishida’s camp has five days from the date of the bout to file the appeal. They had not done so at the time of publication.

Representatives for Ishida’s camp declined to comment on the situation.

Enough i’m sick of this bullshit, i’m tired of guys who get dominated and beat down claiming greasing as the cause no you got your ass beat and you’re making yourself look like a jackass by crying about it.

by Raker on Aug 17, 2009 10:48 PM EDT reply actions

So if a guy actually did cheat and grease, and a guy loses because of it, he therefore loses the right to complain about it? That makes no sense at all.

Great point ^

come on is it not first hand knowledge in todays sports be it stick and ball or prize fighting that Athletes will do anything to gain a advantage or the upper hand. If someone is willing to juice before there fight why would a fighter not be willing to grease down also before hand. I think its done just as much as illegal substances like roids and amphetamines if not more in mma today.

by Shocbomb on Aug 17, 2009 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

You’re right, but the opposite holds true as well. Who knows if the loser is simply being a “sore loser” and is willing to falsely accuse the winner in an effort to have an excuse for losing. I am not saying that Ishida is lying, but moreso that everything is speculation at this point.

by chrisbboy82 on Aug 18, 2009 12:40 AM EDT up reply actions

If you think grease had anything to do with Gilberts destruction of Ishida you are out of your mind, the fact is i’m tired of guys making ridiculous accusations without any proof after they get tooled.

You want to try and justify this bs fine, but me I put this with the BJ, Thompson and Hughes accusations as just a bunch of crybabies mad that they got beatdown trying to justify to themselves that they didn’t really lose it’s beyond pathetic.

come on now !!!

Exactly I don’t know why most people find it so hard to believe that grasing down is happening in MMA. Even though its fucked up the old saying holds true to alot of athletes today in all sports that if you are not cheating you are not trying to win. How many fighters and trainers have we heard say the last few years if you knew how many fighters were using the juice and other drugs like amphetamines and stimulants you would be just amazed at the numbers and the BIG names. Look at all the positive test results the last few years in mma and other sports now how many do you think got away with it and never got caught ? Alot proabably 1/50 if not way more for every one who gets caught ? s I don’t know the exact numbers no one does but a hell of alot of fighters get away with it then end up getting caught. Its just not hard at all to mask a urine test for any drugs or cycle off them at the right time before a fight so they don’t show up in your urine. The bottom line is Cheating is a huge part of all sports and MMA sorry that some of you are in such denial about it ? And greasing down is as widely used in mma if not more then performance enhancing drugs.

Photo might help clear Melendez

Hmmm, wrestlers do what when trying to hold you down? Head in your chest? Right. What’s Ishida doing in the photo? Trying to control the head and chest. Other than wrapping his arm around his opponents greased skeletal features, what else did he do? Try to control his shoulders and intercept his arms to regain control and stop strikes. That’s only when Melendez wasn’t wrapping his arms around Ishida’s head, shoulders and legs to maintain top control. Ishida was also getting a chest of facial grease during the above and how likely is it that it didn’t also smother over both of them?

So why, after a round of this, would his shoulders and arms be greasy and even harder to hold on to? Would simply a towel rub-down get rid of the distributed grease? Not likely. It’d wipe most off the surface and push the residue into his pores. Then they retouch the facial grease and they repeat – now with pre-greasing. Rinse and repeat.

Even the tiniest amount of jelly mixed with tons of sweat has to be a complete change in game. Add to the issue that they’re both covered in it by the end of the first round and you’ve got two slightly greasy guys, who are also sweaty their asses off while wrasslin’ accumulating a little more each round.

Mmmm – GREASY!
