ufc fighters have always competed in ADCC, which why i was so confused about the sambo thing for fedor.
i’m also interested how GSP does.

Sambo involves strikes as well. Much higher chance of injury.

In 2005 GSP...
got submitted by a beautiful flying armbar from Leo Santos (link)
I’d be shocked if he makes it past the second round this time.

What are your opinions on his progression since then? Pretty much asking for an opinion on his black belt in BJJ.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
It’s a lot of guesswork, to be honest. He hasn’t formally in competed in pure jiu-jitsu or submission wrestling in any meaningful capacity. We don’t really know what his sport BJJ game looks like. On top of that, his MMA game makes it difficult to assess his skills. GSP’s insistence on never staying on his back to play guard in MMA robs us of the opportunity to properly evaluate or really even speculate with any precision about his game.
But what we do know is that his wrestling skills won’t take him very far. GSP’s best wrestling asset is his takedown and unfortunately for him, his division is filled with guys who are superb guard players or experts at hitting sweeps from various guard positions/iterations. They’ll either concede the takedown or immediately flop to guard/half guard. Remember, where flopping to guard in MMA is seen as risky and weak, doing so in sport BJJ can be a deadly move. Kron Gracie at the 2008 Pan Ams flopped to his back against virtually all of his opponents – opponents with different styles from each other – and subsequently crushed them in vicious fashion with cross chokes and arm bars in record time.
I’d also say from what footage there is of St. Pierre, we know he’s got solid fundamentals, incredible base, fantastic athleticism and reliable conditioning. But we don’t really have much evidence to suggest his sport BJJ game is competitive at the Abu Dhabi level. And yes, I know GSP passed Penn’s guard when they fought in the rematch. I admit that’s impressive, but I also recognize how GSP is very much reliant on “punish you now, pass your guard later” type of fighter. I seriously, seriously doubt he’d find the same measure of success without strikes. As an illustration, Mike Fowler said when he and Diego Sanchez would roll in pure BJJ, Fowler would basically man handle him. But when they did MMA passing drills, Diego was significantly harder to stop from passing. He had more adroitly developed that aspect of passing over strictly shoulder pressure and knee cut across passes. This is something of an obvious point, but the personal example from Fowler really brought it home for me.
Look, maybe GSP comes out and surprises us. We know he’s a capable athlete, so who knows? But in terms of what information is out there and what we know of his game, there isn’t much to suggest he’ll go very far.

Great analysis Luke. This is the cornerstone of this site.
I agree that its not likely that GSP can compete at this level however with his athleticism, and reported willingness and ability to learn I would not be totally surprised to see that he had some guard skills that he has never showed in MMA.
I dislike Matt Hughes.

Excellent Analysis
I would love a BJJ primer – a “who’s who” of the sport. I hear a lot about guys who train with other guys, and the names all blend together. Unless they also compete in MMA, I know nothing about them & would love to learn more, but can’t find a good site for it. I learned MMA via Wikipedia until I found BE, & BJJ info is more scant there.
Also, the .gif title says this is Galvao (I assume Andre?) – is it?

Would definately be interested in this
I only know the mma guys and some of the really top guys…I.e. drysdale. Even then I don’t totally know what their strengths are.
Hmmm. I can start a series if folks are interested.

It’s no different than covering K-1 – there’s enough cross-over to make it relevant. I love watching grappling videos, but never know what I’m seeing.

It’s not unheard of for a big strong guy with great pure wrestling to beat jiujitsu players in ADCC. See Kerr’s 2000 run against Machado and Ricco.

@Luke
I don’t mean to nit-pick but equating ‘pulling guard’ in BJJ as ‘flopping on one’s back’ in MMA is kinda unfair. Pulling guard is a legit technique and not counted as a takedown in NAGA point scoring schemes. And even in MMA – Thales Leites ‘flopped on his back’ whereas Shinya Aoki ‘pulls guard’.
My guess, and it’s only a guess, is that Georges sees it as more of a learning experience as opposed to going there to try and win it. Anything he can take away from it to help him in his fights makes it worth it even if he goes out in the first round.
Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.
Agree,
GSP has always said how he likes to train in pure disciplines and then integrate into MMA later. I think this might make him better at Grappling then we realize, but at the very least its a way for him to continue to improve a component of his game…Since I’m not really sure MMA fights actually improve his game at this point.
looks like it should be pretty good this year. would be funny if maia and Mardquadt ended up facing off
It’s no-Gi so it’s definitely more interesting and Drysdale gets favored a little more because of that. If it was Gi, Roger would crush him, mount him, and then x-choke him just like everyone else he’s fought.

So awesome
I’ve been really excited about this for a long time. Hoping there will be somewhere to watch it this year..
I STILL poop rainbows.
As much as a I love GSP, Marcelo Garcia should dominate him if they were to compete. Garcia is one of the best in the world at pure BJJ, so unless GSP drastically improved his BJJ game recently, Marcelo would dominate.
No matter what it would be entertaining. I’m hoping I can watch online or something..
But if you are stupid, you will be beaten with a stick - Proverbs 10:13
where is Jeff Monson??
and i thought fedor was gonna participate? Monson vs Fedor would have been sweet
Isn’t Monson awaiting sentencing for that vandalism charge? He’d probably have travel restrictions if that were the case.
He can’t leave the country, had to surrender his visa
Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

Whatever happened with his affiliation to Lloyd Irvin? Who’s he affiliated with now? I’m hoping he does well too. Always liked his game.

that highlight video on Maia's page is sick
i had no idea he went against (and beat) Gonzaga. I wonder what weight they were at.
That’s a legendary video actually. When I made his Wikipedia page, I ended up posting a ton of videos. That was one of them. Gonzaga, at the time of the match, was about 60 pounds heavier.

I'm considering attending this live

Nice.
I remember they were saying how Fedor and Mousasi were going to be in this but its still an impressive list of fighters. Hopefully for GSP’s sake he doesn’t get flying armbarred again in like thirty seconds.
Now all we need is for HDNet to cover it…
This shirt is "dry clean only", which means it's dirty.
Fk Yer!
This will be awesome

Cool beans
Curran, Babalu, and Monson are all cool MMA- crossovers.
And i’m interested in Askren, doesn’t he have a purple belt? That said, he probably gets handled in the 1’st or 2’nd round of the tourney. I just can’t see him being competitive against guys like Kron, Marcelo, or Vieira.
