Quote of the Day: Randy Couture Wants to Be the First to Submit Antonio Rodridgo Nogueira

Couture_medium

I have to be attentive on the ground, but I think working with Neil Melanson, I've come up with ways to control the submission game, and I think if we go to the ground, I can be on the top or bottom and I'll be fine -- I think I can win the fight there. How cool would it be to submit Nogueira? Beating him on the ground would be an accomplishment.

oh man … pipe dream, Randy.

as much as i love Couture, i have to wonder about him lately. he thought Gina had a chance vs. Cyborg, and now this?

by bobthewriter on Aug 17, 2009 3:40 PM EDT reply actions

Well he is training Gina,

so he kind of has to say that. But I think his comments after the fight about her needing to get in the gym for training consistently says a lot about what he really thought.

Arguing on the internet is like being in the special olympics, even when you win you are still retarded.

HAHAHAHA damn gina’s snatch is more powerful than i thought. Randy done lost his mind. Can he beat Nog? sure but submit him there isn’t a chance in hell

add me to the list

of people who would like to know how powerful Gina’s snatch actually is.

I have mixed emotions about this fight.

I have always been a huge Randy fan & after watching Big Nog on TUF I really like the man. I just hope that we see the best of both of these guys & not two old guys rolling around while not doing much.

he might be able to win on the ground due to gnp, but prolly not by sub.

by bdw on Aug 17, 2009 3:42 PM EDT reply actions

Well, if Mir can knock him out, why not?

I mean, has anyone noticed that Nog looks older than Randy lately? What does that tell you?

knocking out a Jujitsu fighter is much different than submitting him. Nog has took his beatings and could take another one but he still isnt subbing the guy lets be real

Imagine if Randy had GnP’d him ALMOST to the point of unconsciousness then pulled an arm bar? Eh? Eh?

don't do it randy...

i think his best chance is in boxing or the clinch. couture is light years ahead of most guys when working out of the clinch as far as control goes.

I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08

If he does go for a submission, he will end up being submitted. His best bet is to use clinch work against the cage and just slowly punish Nogueira for 15 minutes.

by AlwaysRelaxing on Aug 17, 2009 3:52 PM EDT reply actions

First of all, that is an awesome photo of Couture. Second, Nog is an accoplished bower so it might not be such a crazy plan to try to beat him on the ground. I definitely feel like that punishing Nog in the clinch against the fence is Couture’s best game plan though.

wishful thinking randy. nog is gonna take serious offense to this

by espino on Aug 17, 2009 3:54 PM EDT reply actions

for sure

remember how offended he was by that guy from TUF that said he had basic jits, he should be twice offended by this. Nog is gonna be pissed! should be a good battle.

by Orcus on Aug 17, 2009 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

hahaha

I didn’t watch that season. Who said that?

by David_ on Aug 17, 2009 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Vinny Magalhaes, and it was not an insult. Just an assessment of someone of similar skill level. Roger Gracie also uses basic BJJ techniques.

A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

yeah

but I said he took it as an insult, which he did!

by Orcus on Aug 17, 2009 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions

what he said had some merit though...

as far as competition bjj goes Vinny has a few high finishes and wins in the mundial world championships. he is one of the best in the world. as far as MMA bjj goes… thats a different story

by espino on Aug 17, 2009 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with the other comments

that this is Randy’s way of saying submissions are in fact NOT in the gameplan; however, is it so weird to think Randy might get into Nog’s half-guard, try futility to pound him out, and instead go for a Kimura? He has the strength to do it, and could probably get into a dominant enough position to attempt it without getting into too much danger.

by rzor on Aug 17, 2009 3:59 PM EDT reply actions

This is one of those fights that feels like….

The Winner is back into the title picture. The loser is one step away from either retirement or being a non-contender for the rest of their career.

It actually makes it more fun then a title fight because the stakes are higher.

by AlwaysRelaxing on Aug 17, 2009 4:03 PM EDT reply actions

Haven't you learned yet?

Randy is never near retirement!! NEVER!!

I agree

I can see Nog retiring if he looses this one, but I can’t see Randy doing the same. War Big Nog!

LOL
I can see Nog (33 years old) retiring if he looses this one, but I can’t see Randy (46 years old) doing the same. War Big Nog!

Walla walla walla I'm an idiot.

by ufc4 on Aug 17, 2009 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

it's true!

Nog has already come out and recognized that if he continues to have bad fights he’ll retire, yes, even at 33… meanwhile, couture has not given that type of point of view yet (in the past couple of years).

by Orcus on Aug 18, 2009 5:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Hit him with your groin randy!

You don't look like a Tanaka.

by spectaa on Aug 17, 2009 4:08 PM EDT reply actions

The stakes in this fight are really high. I don’t understand when people say they’re not pumped for this, they both basically have their backs against the wall but could also end up in title contention with a win.

I think people shouldn’t read too much into this. Randy is better on the ground than he’s ever been, but he will still go to his bread and butter. I suspect he’ll start standing, if it’s working he’ll stick with it, but if Nog starts landing we’ll see the clinch game. Randy really gets to decide where this fight takes place, which puts him in a very good position.

by Michael Rome on Aug 17, 2009 4:21 PM EDT reply actions

I am more pumped for Marquardt vs Maia but Nog vs Couture isn’t a dud.

I think this being a three round fight strongly favors Couture. If he can control him against the cage, he has a very good chance of winning this fight.

by Zack Gobie on Aug 17, 2009 4:44 PM EDT reply actions

yeah, it’s misdirection but i dont know why he thinks it’s gonna fool Nog. so Nog and Blackhouse hear this and they’re like what? " hey nog i think we need to work more on your submission defense. i know we’d planned to work on the clinch game since it’s randy’s strength but he says he’s gonna submit you."

anyway, randy by decision or nog by sub in the 3rd….i’m leanin towards the randy scenerio.

dont care who wins so much as I want a great performance from both.

Randy better try to keep himself in top control if it does hit the ground.. He’s never been good off his back in any of his fights where he ended up on his back..

I think everyone is going to be surprised at the outcome of the fight..

by MMAuthority on Aug 17, 2009 5:10 PM EDT reply actions

Are you predicting a double KO?

by Zack Gobie on Aug 17, 2009 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

double submission!

each one going for the leg lock! JK, Nog by armbar!

by Orcus on Aug 17, 2009 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Holy Knee Jerk reaction Batman.

You guys should read the actual interview, the interviewer asked him if he’d prefer to keep it on the feet, and Couture just said he’d be fine on the ground, and how neat it would be to submit one of the greatest at his own game. What’s he supposed to say, ‘if i go to the ground it’s game over, i’m cooked?’

yeah

he should be realistic :P

I hope Randy can pull out a win.

by E.Nightmare on Aug 17, 2009 6:55 PM EDT reply actions

i agree with GKINMD, and would also like to add if big nog has never been submitted, wouldn’t anybody who fights him want to be known as the first person to submit him regardless if its their gameplan or not

Has Big Nog’s guard ever even been passed for more than like 3 seconds?
