Another Look at Anderson's Anchor Punch

So I watched the Anderson Silva fight with Forrest again, and after seeing pictures of Anderson being compared to Ali, I watched the second Ali vs. Liston fight. I noticed it's pretty much the same punch which knocked down both fighters. Of course, Ali's punch was more of a cross than a jab. The comparison between the fighters in these two fights is awesome.

Here is Ali's "Anchor Punch":

Here is Anderson's:

And here is Ali talking about the anchor punch:

I think I blinked too when I saw Anderson's anchor punch live. I was like, "wait, what happened?"

Walls have terrible punching technique. They will still knock you out if you run into them face first.

Very apt comparison

The way they throw the punch is very similar.

I love how Ali spends 70 seconds explaining how one second is divided into hundredths, and 10 seconds talking about the actual punch.

anchor punch

Good post! I recognized it right away. Its also the same punch Petruzelli dumped Kimbo with. It only takes 25 lbs to knockout someone IF it hits the right spot. You’re right, some of the moves by Silva are very similar to Ali’s, although if you look at Ali in his prime, as good as Silva is (and he is great) he’s no match for Ali (of course Ali only had to concentrate on boxing). The similarity is amazing though!

You can really tell Silva is a student of the fight game. He has elements of many different styles in his fighting technique. He has boxing hands and movement like Ali. Yet he is also like Bruce Lee with the kicks.

also...

…on a related note, did you know Ali was also a huge fan of Bruce Lee? Can you imagine Bruce Lee in his prime as a MMA fighter? Or Ali? Not to diminish Anderson Silva as he really is light years ahead of everyone!

Ryo Chonan must be so happy

He will live on forever as the dude who gave the almighty Anderson his last loss, and when people watch it in the future for historical purposes, they will be blown away.

Anderson Silva will lose again eventually.

The Anchor punch goes back much further than Ali. the Great Jack Johnson was a frequent user of the Anchor Punch. Ali even credits watching video of Jack Johnson as to where he learned the anchor punch. it doesn’t look like much, but clearly is more than effective.
