Just How Dominant Was Cris Cyborg?

Computstrike sheds light on the fight with some data:

Caranocyborgcompustrike_medium

I was impressed with Carano's balance when she was able to land on top and in mount after Cyborg attempted two takedowns from the clinch, but the record is clear: Cyborg was dominant in nearly every quantifiable respect. The difference between the performances aren't alarming if you simply analyze one dimension, but if you measure the differences in totality the gap between how they performed begins to widen.

A major takeaway for me in this fight was the noted lack of mobility by Carano. Where Cyborg was throwing punches with respectable hand speed, Carano seemed to throw slow, telegraphed crosses that landed to no effect which then permitted Cyborg to cover up, clinch and relaunch her own attack. And once in the clinch, the difference in physical strength and athleticism was immediately clear. Cyborg's power in terms of striking hit levels of hyperbole with some suggesting the Brazilian could render opponents unconscious with arm punches against the fence. And while that's patently false, Cyborg was able to work a Rich Franklin-esque attack: create an opportunity or opening through volume striking and push the attack until the referee is forced to step in.

There are plenty of opportunities for redemption for Carano. Cyborg does make herself available to the technical precision Carano and Couture had predicted she would be. But that's only true if Carano (or whoever fights Cyborg) is able to use aggressive, fleet of foot movement, a jab working on overtime and a recognition that the speed of the attack against Cyborg is as important as the location.

I was utterly impressed with Cyborg’s counter punching. At one point half way through the round it looked like Cyborg was content with only countering every slow telegraphed punhc Carano threw.

It looks even more dominant when you consider that:
(1) most of Gina’s offense was generated by Cyborg’s ill conceived takedown attempts.
(2) despite the commentators trying to sell Gina’s offense (“Cyborg’s backing up” “Cyborg got a taste of Carano’s power”), Cyborg didn’t looked fazed by any of Gina’s strikes.

Carano’s best offense was Cyborg pulling full mount twice (!?!!?) one of which Gina countered by standing up and giving up the dominant position (???!!)

I didn’t say it was her best offense. I said I was impressed with her balance and base. Big, big difference.

No, this wasn’t directed toward your post Luke, that is my honest assessment of the fight.

It does fuel the fire on the debate of whether female MMA is bad MMA. Some very amateur moved last night.

Yeah, I have seen street fights that were more technical. Okay maybe not, but it looked like some really bad amateur fighting.

I dont think we have talked enough about Carano giving up the mount. That was a serious flaw

I’m not sure she knows how to keep it.

It looked to me like Cyborg had recovered half guard just before Gina stood up, I thought that was the reason for giving up top position.

I think your on to something here.

It looked a bit like Cyborg might have been powering into a less vulnerable position. But I think between the earlier heel hook attempt which Gina was able to escape from and just a general lack of confidence on ground with Cyborg, she just wanted to get back into a position she was more comfortable in. The problem there was that she was losing in the standup as well.

Really weird that she gave up the mount. After watching it again it looked like Cyborg was transitioning to half-guard but, yeah, still weird.

I talked about this with Spencer on Cage Cast. It will be posted tomorrow. Its in the first 2 minutes

I’m thinking you meant “would be” not “world be” right?

Carano & Cyborg showed horrible technique last night. It was a bad showing.

Makes it even funnier when people try to analyize their fighting styles and make some sense of it. Very simple….. If a woman with solid fundamentals came into the sport, she would wipe all of these women out quickly.

you mean like Tara LaRossa? i kinda like sarah kaufmann quite a bit as well, but both are undersized. i’m not that blown away by erin toughill, she’s an ok fighter, but is getting more pub due to the fact she isn’t ugly and was on american gladiators. kinda like a carano lite. we’ll see if this 135 and 145lb torourney can churn out a superstar.

Of course you would say that.

This post doesn’t illustrate the difference in punching power too. Carano landed a good share of punches, but they didn’t seem to phase Cyborg, where when Cyborg threw Gina sort of wilted. She kept turning around from her as if that was going to help. It was sloppy but it was definitely exciting, and the crowd was insane.

WOW

Cyborg really did outperform Gina in every aspect of the game. Not to mention how much more damaging the strikes she landed looked.
