Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg Results: Cris Cyborg Crushes Gina Carano

Thumbnail_crop_php_medium

In a fight that was billed as the biggest women's fight in MMA history, it ended not even being very close.

Carano was able to land some advantages positions (mount), but could never do much with it. The face of women's MMA looked like half the athlete of Cyborg, moving slowly and losing a lot of positional wrestling and grappling battles.

Cyborg, by contrast, looked positively phenomenal. Carano willingly putting her back against the fence helped matters, but the known pocket exchanger didn't mind working a rough and tumble clinch game. She also dominated on takedowns and appeared to be far stronger than the overwhelmed American.

While Strikeforce can put Erin Toughill in front of Cyborg next, it does not appear there are many challengers capable of being physically Cyborg's equal.

Cris Cyborg stops Gina Carano at nearly the exact mark of round one.

Gina just doesn’t seem to be a fighter. She seems to lack the heart of one at least.

If she lacked the heart she would have been done way earlier than that.

Power

She got dominated by power. Simple as that.

by Krimson on Aug 16, 2009 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It makes no difference when she was finished. She gave up a lot sooner than that. Her ground game sucks so bad that Cyborg was controlling every aspect of the fight.

I just think people bought too much into the Carano hype. The real experts and people who actually know what they’re talking about knew it would end this way. Carano has no ground game at all and it cost her in this fight because Cyborg was able to get whatever she wanted. She dominated all five minutes. There was no point in the fight where I thought Gina was gaining the upper hand.

Gina needs to find out if she’s really a fighter or if she’s just doing this to get her name out there. To me she’s not a fighter.

by FlyByKnight on Aug 16, 2009 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So Forrest dosen’t have any heart either right?

Please. How about we wait a minute and see if theres an explanation.

I also like how you ignore her submission defense, mostly how she got out of that Americana.

Submission defense? Get out of here. She escaped it, sure, but Cyborg still pressed her so hard that Gina broke.

Cyborg kept Gina off guard and used it to squash her.

by FlyByKnight on Aug 16, 2009 12:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

…So she has no heart because she was overwhelmed by power? Are you fucking kidding me dude?

Gina looked terrible, but saying she has no heart is a bit far fetched.

by kyfm621 on Aug 16, 2009 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

She wasn’t overwhelmed by power. She got overwhelmed by the situation. Don’t get it twisted.

Cyborg took a few hard shots from Gina and walked through them. That was discouraging to Gina.

Who the fuck gets full mount and gives it up? Seriously.

by FlyByKnight on Aug 16, 2009 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Situation…shitty blocking against a powerful puncher. Are we seeing eye to eye here? Same thing, different terminologies.

Despite the heart thing, I completely agree on the full mount thing, she was landing punches…what the fuck was she doing…

by ufc4 on Aug 16, 2009 12:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What?

Watch again and see that Cyborg had the Americana, lost it and Gina lifted her elbow back up again gift-wrapping it for her to take again. Giving it back after getting out of it is not stellar “defense”.

by SizeMatters on Aug 16, 2009 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think it was obvious early on that Gina was outmatched, just like Forrest v Silva. Not that they don’t have any heart, but both clearly looked broken early on in their respective fights.

by CliChe Guevara on Aug 16, 2009 12:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Totally agree...

with the no ground/clinch game comment. She has used the standing head-lock (if that’s what you want to call it) whenever in close quarters and I called it before this fight. She’ll wrap her arms around the head and I knew Cyborg had the strength to whip her down, which she did. The elbow was consistently pushed over Cyborg’s head giving up her back.

Where the F does this technique come from or why is it not coached out of her? It’s not like this is her first fight. I watched this in previous fights and called this out as being a problem in here game yet it’s still there over a year later. This is basic, beginner stuff but that’s what she looked like in tight action, a beginner.

I think her heart was fine in the fight but maybe not so much in the gym.

by SizeMatters on Aug 16, 2009 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

I wondered the same thing

How can her coaches let her keep on doing the same extremely basic mistake ? I’ve never seen anybody grab a headlock in a MMA fight and not get their back taken. I wonder if maybe even her trainers bought into her hype too much, and didn’t coach her properly.

This actually helps the UFC. Gina would be a far bigger draw than Cris and now that she lost, she has lost a lot of her hype. So that is one less big draw StrikeFarce i mean StrikeForce can use effectively

This was never going to be a good fight. Now Gina can stop thinking about training and start thinking about men.

From day one I knew Cyborg was going to crush Gina, I just didn’t have confidence in Strikeforce not prearranging the results. Looks like they didn’t in the end.

First let me say

Told you: bet the house on Cyborg.

Here’s the problem: Cyborg absolutely destroyed Gina. So is there any woman who could do better against her? Any woman who wouldn’t be 5-10 pounds down against Cyborg?

And people would still show up in much greater numbers to watch Carano fight. So now you have a champion no one wants to see, but whom no one can beat.

If Carano is serious about fighting MMA, she will make a weight that is uncomfortable, but puts her in a position to succeed. Cyborg was too big for her.

by TwoNuse on Aug 16, 2009 12:23 AM EDT via mobile reply actions   0 recs

wut?

Gina has trouble getting to that weight, you think she can go a weight class lower?

("you don’t like Brock" – helping Weobo out)

by mythbuster on Aug 16, 2009 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah.

Cyborg was maybe a little bigger, but 145 is the right size for Gina. Strength and her ability on the ground I think are the two most glaring advantages Cyborg had over Gina.

by Cannon Jacques on Aug 16, 2009 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes I do

She has trouble making weight because fighting isn’t her primary occupation. I doubt she had to cut to get to 145, just train and diet properly.

It was amazing… they were literally trying to ignore the refs call.

What a fucking disgrace.

by mmalogic on Aug 16, 2009 12:29 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

I agree. It was OBVIOUS to anyone that is a MMA fan that Gina was done and that the stoppage was appropriate. Not only that, but the referee can stop the fight at any time, regardless of if the bell rang or not. Example: Look at the Sherk/Penn fight. Ref stops the fight after the bell when he notices that Sherk is clearly done, just like Gina was here.

by Nick Thomas on Aug 16, 2009 12:29 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Could be

I mean, she just looked sluggish from the start. Could have been the cut or could have just been ring rust, either way she had none of the explosiveness she has shown in the past.

by ufc4 on Aug 16, 2009 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

She was cutting a lot more going to 140, and looking like she was on death’s door at the weigh ins, than she had to for this match.

Gina has always been slow like that

and cyborg as always been fast and brutal. To me, this fight was extremely easy to call.

by Andy R on Aug 16, 2009 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cyborg was better in the strength and ground departments. Also Cyborg looked more into the fight, while honestly Carano looked nervous as hell, and didn’t at all follow the gameplan of keeping her back off the fence.

I have never been to a UFC event

but this is my second Strikeforce event in San Jose. I loved it – my seats both times were 50 feet from the cage, and all the fighters walked around the whole time interacting with the fans. I shook hands with El Guapo, Don Frye, Nate Diaz, Brett Rogers, Scott Smith (who really was drunk as balls – me and my buddies were giving him shit then tried to buy him a shot. He was down, but his manager/handler was trying to reign him in), Kevin Randleman, Jake Shields, etc..they all took a ton of time to sign autographs and pose for pics.
And I enjoyed the fights as well. Except for the Taylor/Hieron fight – I was bored on that one.

i wasnt able to watch the fight.

sounds like it was a pretty convincing win for cyborg, but with it ending so close to the bell, is there gonna be some manufactured “controversy” over whether it shouldve been stopped or not? i wouldn’t be suprised if they try to build to a rematch. hard to tell from the play-by-play if it was stopped right at the horn or not.

by woooburn on Aug 16, 2009 12:57 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The only people manufacturing controversy are either drunk, or in the booth commenting the fight. The fight needed to be stopped, Gina had given up all defense and just curled up. She wouldn’t have made it to her stool.

Yup

Not saying otherwise. I have been on the website saying that Cyborg would win AND that she was more technical and has fought 5 minute rounds before in Brazil. Just hoping the fight would be more than 1 round but, what can you do.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Aug 16, 2009 3:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

5 minute rounds are fine for female fighters. The last fight (forgot who it was) was 5 minute rounds and the women fought constantly, never gassed.
Also, Cyborg did fine for the whole 5 minutes.

Carano needs to work on her cardio if she wants to compete at the pro level, eh.
