As with every major show, Bloodyelbow.com will be here to bring you live results and commentary for Strikeforce: Carano vs Cyborg. The live blog will start with the beginning of the Showtime broadcast (10:30pm ET) so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.
As always we have our one rule: NO SPOILERS! In the interest of not ruining anything from the undercard that may make the broadcast we ask that you do not discuss the results of the undercard in the comments until either the broadcast ends or the fight makes the air.
So again, join us for the show and share your thoughts as the event unfolds.
Here we go, the broadcast has begun.
Jay Hieron vs. Jesse Taylor Was on the undercard. : (
Fabricio Werdum vs. Mike Kyle Round 1 Everyone please join me in booing Mike Kyle. Yuji Shimada of PRIDE fame is in the cage! They exchange in the center of the cage. Werdum kicking. Kyle catches a kick, can't capitalize. Kyle lands a right to the face, Werdum gets a single, takes him down. Kyle working for an arm bar?!? Werdum to side mount. Kyle stands, Werdum drops down in a guillotine. Gets the tap. Fabricio Werdum by submission.
Gilbert Melendez vs. Mitsuhiro Ishida The Strikeforce interim lightweight championship begins. Stoked. Ishida is giving up 4" in reach. Herb Dean in the cage. Melendez paces angrily in his corner. Ishida looks focused. Round 1 Ishida with a leg kick. Ishida shoots, Melendez sprawls. Ishida with a left eye poke. Melendez lands a right. Ishida circling into Melendez' power. Ishida shoots, fails. Melendez exchanges. Ishida leg kicks, Melendez lands with a combination. Again, leg kick answered with punches by Melendez. Gilbert lands a jab, and a hard left. Ishida is stunned. Ishida shoots, gets a single. Melendez working a choke but is now on his back. Ishida is on his back, working for an RNC. Gilbert reverses. Ishida working a guillotine, loses it. Now Melendez has top position. Ishida working a smothering guard, going for a kimura. Ishida up to one knee and Melendez working a single. BloodyElbow gives Melendez the first round 10-9. Round 2 Ishida still circling to his left. Melendez lands a jab and fires leg kicks. Ishida with a lightening fast shot. Melendez gets back up to his feet. They clinch against the cage. Now back to the center of the ring. Ishida's cauliflower ear is bleeding. Melendez pawing with jabs, lands a hard left and a second. Melendez landing combinations, Ishida shoots, grabs an arm but is eating lefts. Ishida stands, Melendez gets a double. Now working from behind Ishida. Ishida shoots at Melendez' legs, gets stuffed and pinned against the cage. Melendez is landing knees to Ishida's gut. Ishida stands, Melendez landing hooks to the body. Ishida fires back and backs Gilbert up. Melendez eye is bleeding. Bloody Elbow scores it 10-9 for Melendez. Round 3 Melendez feinting punches to start. Ishida lands with a jab. Another. They exchange. Melendez shoots. Ishida stuffs. Ishida beginning to land punches. Melendez scores. Ishida with a jab. Ishida shoots gets stuffed. Maybe a headbutt stuns Ishida. Ishida drops, Melendez pounces. landing GnP. Now in Ishida's guard. Hard combo of punches from Melendez. Gilbert takes his back, threatens the RNC once. Twice. Three times. Melendez pounds him out in 3. Dominant performance from the new Interim Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez. Gilbert Melendez by TKO in 3.
Between fight trivia question -- will Carano vs Cyborg be the first dueling corn-rows title fight in MMA history?
Gegard Mousasi vs. Renato "Babalu" Sobral Round 1 Big John McCarthy in the cage. Mousasi is looking blase at the staredown. They touch gloves. Trade leg kicks. Babalu throwing punches. Sobral catches a kick, gets the clinch. Mousasi gets the takedown, quickly to sidemount. Mousasi pounds Sobral out to stake the Strikeforce light heavyweight belt! Gegard Mousasi by TKO in 1.
Nice promo for "FEDOR" between fights. The man is marketable.
Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos vs. Gina Carano Round 1 Cyborg is landing. Gina gets the takedown, lands some ground and pound. Cyborg goes for a heel hook! Now has top position, landing punches. Cyborg is tagging Carano. Gina gets mount, lands some hard GnP. She stands up. Cyborg rushes her, landing shots with Gina's back on the fence. Cyborg backs up, tags Gina. Gina rolls for a knee bar, misses it completely. Gina goes for a superman punch, gets tagged coming in. Cyborg is imposing her will. Throws Carano. Lands shots, lets Gina back up. Cyborg scoring, battering Carano. Cyborg with a trip takedown to 1/2 guard. Working for an Americana. Gina rolls out of it. Cyborg still on top, landing huge shots. The ref stops a beating as the round ends! Chris Cyborg Santos takes the title at the very end of the first round.

In unrelated but awesome news. Australia seems to be getting on board the UFC – and to a lesser extent, MMA – wagon now.
Not sure what happened but we got UFC 100 on one day delay because of a boxing bout on the same day but my brother just informed me that we’ll be getting UFC 103 live with the Mayweather/Marquez bout being delayed.

The makeup is pretty noticeable after seeing them both in gloriously unflattering HD for the weigh-ins. Gus looks like Nicholson’s Joker, and they seem to have covered up Mauro’s neck herpes pretty well.

This is the kind of stuff the UFC should be doing. Honestly, when is the UFC going to abandon the gladiator PPV intro. When it comes to their telecasts I think the UFC is at the bottom of the heap when it comes to how they present the sport.

Michael Rome alluded to this the other day but there are more and more women getting into martial arts every day. It’ll take a few years but eventually women’s MMA will have enough talent to make it relevant.

Cyborg got minimal hype from Strikeforce/Showtime leading up to the fight compared to Carano. I assume this is due to their respective looks. If this is a sport, the dominant champ deserves attention. Seeing her glowing with pride after winning, I think she’s a charming and a good product (except for the language barrier).

I was referring to her charisma as a new champion. Cyborg, when smiing and celebrating, is magnetic. She may not do double duty as fighter/sex-symbol, but she’s a physical enigma with a very human soft-side. She’s the female Axe Murderer, and I feel like we saw her break from the intimidating character as rode her husband’s shoulders out of the ring, signing autographs and smiling ear to ear. .
