Professional MMA Fighters Predict a Winner for Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg
The responses run the gamut from the political:
Brodie Farber: I have absolutely no interest in watching women fight. I’ll be sure to tune into a different channel during that time.
To the reasonable:
Randy Couture: I believe Gina Carano will take this fight over by the third round, using solid footwork and punching combinations to frustrate Cyborg and wear her down. I’m sure I’m a little biased, but she looks great and has had a very good camp. It should be a monumental fight for women’s MMA.
Ricardo Liborio: Carano by decision.
Jake Shields: I see it being a very close fight, with Gina being more technical and Cyborg being the stronger of the two, but I see conditioning being the deciding factor. With this being their first title fight and jumping from three- to five-minute rounds, it is gonna be a big change for both. But with Gina having a more experienced camp, I will pick her because they should be aware of this and have spent adequate time conditioning her.
Charlie Valencia: Carano wins by decision. How can you hit that beautiful face?
Chael Sonnen: Cyborg? I thought he was a middleweight.

given the parties involved, i’m not convinced both will make weight. Any chance they would make the title bout be at a higher weight if one misses weight?
Rumors are that Carano is way down in weight, and she had to start eating to cut properly. Carano will make weight for sure if that’s the case. It’s at 145, man… not 140.

Exactly. Everyone makes a big deal about making weight, but Carano had problems making 135 and 140. She has never missed at 145.

Real Question
How many fights has she had at 145?

I hate Chael. Everything about him from his goofy Utah-sounding name to his Dana-ass-kissing video to his tapping, saying he tapped, and then denying the whole thing.
But that was the best comment ever.

you'd be surprised
A lot of people – even here – seem to think she’ll be overwhelmed by Cris’ aggression.
I think Cris’ too sloppy and tactically limited so she’ll get picked apart if not KO’d or subbed.
I don’t really have a feel for Santos’ skills. We’ve seen so little of her that it’s hard for me to really have a pick for that fight. I’d like to root for her, but – and yes, this is more sexist, lookist, chauvinist bullshit – it’s probably better for the sport’s growth in America if Carano wins.
Either way, it’s a fight I’ll be happy to download. :-) (Sorry, Coker.)

Chael gets +1 for the funny
I’m not a fan of his fighting style, but he is always good for a humorous quip in those ‘fighters pick’ columns.
Indeed. I also like his “I’m a republican and we don’t do that” quip regarding having people in your guard. Ignorant, but funny.

sorry. This is an MMA website not gossip mag. Although, in my defense, they promoters or chance itself really couldn’t have handpicked a better beauty vs. well you know type of fight.
by Austin Martin on Aug 14, 2009 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions
You’re obviously new. There aren’t any other beauties out there for Carano to fight. And you have to have a match-up that is actually main event worthy. Cyborg vs. Carano has been in the making for quite some time. I’m not sure exactly what you expected. Pam Anderson vs. Gina Carano?

I'm new to posting on THIS website
because others i’ve been on have unfortunately become filled with what I apparently look like right now, a troll.
I’ve been an advocate of this fight being the main event because of its significance to MMA. I feel like the ring rust for Carano will be a factor. In the past shes looked overwhelmed in the beginning of her fights and i think Cyborg is going to bull rush her wanderlei style to try to get a knockout, which i think she will. However, if carano can withstand the onslaught through the first round, i think that she can outpoint Cyborg. The conditioning is really the biggest factor. Carano always looks a little soft, and i’ve questioned her cardio in a 3 round fight, nevermind a 5 rounder. Cyborg’s cardio is effected differently because she is more solid muscle so she’ll have to dehydrate herself more. I really don’t know who to pick… I’d rather Carano, because i think her image is better for WMMA, but i like Cyborg and chute boxes really agressive style.
I’m still going to go with Cyborg first round KO
by Austin Martin on Aug 14, 2009 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions
Actually, there are a lot of Brazilian athletes that you could say have masculine facial features… but haven’t you ever noticed that supermodels have masculine facial features as well. The difference is that Cyborg is masculine in her physique. Her shoulders are probably the most prominent feature.

Just wanted to say – I made a comment about Cyborg looking manly and got a warning from a mod , then I see you quoting an mma fighter basically saying the same thing .
I’m just saying …bloodyelbow should stick to a coherent policy
The policy is coherent. When Dana calls Loretta Hunt a bitch, it’s news. When a commenter says the same thing it’s not.
Eh. The policy is semi-coherent. If I say that I agreed with Dana and support his statement, is that worthy of a flag?
Keeping a site like this running and keeping the comments on track is always going to involve judgment calls. I don’t always agree with the admins here, but they’re trying.

That’s bull man . Dana White is the president of the UFC and he publicly called a female reporter some nasty words . When they ‘reported’ it , it was as huge articles that included a lot of criticism on White. Now here u have a quote of Chael Sonnen (wow , what a celebrity) calling cyborg a man . The quote is just given as it is . No criticism on Chael , no nothing .On the contrary – it’s under the title “sexually charged” , which is totally humoristic . Are you really gonna argue with me this quote is “news” ? It was put there to be funny.
The fact is, Cyborg is a male and a middleweight… Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos, Cristiane’s husband and nick-namesake. The joke is somewhat more witty than merely saying that she looks like a man—as with most jokes, the context and set up is as important as the punchline itself.
It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.
There’s a difference between YOU saying it in the comments and a FIGHTER being quoted as stating it. We are reporting what someone else said. I don’t know what the comment was you stated in the past or who warned you, so I’ll stay out of that discussion.

Please – they took his quote and made it look funnier by giving the title “sexually charged” . If Bloodyelbow wants to discourage “fighter bashing” (whatever the hell that is) I would expect it not to give funny titles to insulting quotes. Who the hell is Chael Sonnen ? Everything he says counts as “news” ? No , it was just a funny quote put under a funny title . I’m just fine with it , but when people like me make these comments it’s wrong ? What the hell …
And just my humble opinion I don’t think the freedom of speech level here should be the same as in Iran or North Korea
It really doesn’t matter what you think the freedom of speech level should be or shouldn’t be. That’s why these comments aren’t rampant with ridiculous shit like MMAJunkie or Sherdog.

You ignored most of what I said – whoever wrote the article could’ve put this quote under “chauvenist pig” or “classless asshole” or whatever . But he chose to give it a funny title (or if not funny – at least not negative). That’s all I said – it’s being inconsistent .
When a fighter says it – it’s news and you can even present it in a funny way . When a reader like myself says it – he gets a warning and his post is deleted.
You wanna ban me or whatever you can do anything you want (literally) . I made a few fanposts here and was basically being positive. Also – why doesn’t it matter to you what readers think ? I’m not saying you should do whatever I say , but if it was my site I would at least consider other opinions instead of saying “it really doesn’t matter”.
The “whoever” who wrote the article is me, the Editor-in-Chief of the site. And calling it “sexually charged” isn’t even remotely a joke nor was it intended to be. It’s a statement of fact.
As for you, I’m not sure what comment you got banned for, but so far none of your arguments are helping your case.

I said that cyborg would fail a vagina test – that comment got me a warning and was deleted.
I used the word vagina , not anything dirty . I could care less the comment was deleted – hell Chael said it way funnier than I did (he’s actually quite the clown I see) , I was just surprised and somewhat indignant as a reader to see that his quote was treated as a joke , while my comment was treated like I threatened to murder Obama , that’s all .
I can dig the “we’re not Sherdog” but there’s a limit even to that , no ? . Can’t people make a joke?

Farber’s comment is just one more example of how far women’s MMA has to go. Even people within the sport itself have massive prejudices against women fighting. Just imagine how people in the mainstream who are just getting past the ‘human cockfighting’ image feel about it. Now imagine how those people are going to feel when we see our first Stevenson-Edwards style bloodbath or a Belfort-Eastman level cut.
Just wait until Cyborg has bloodied up Carrano’s face “horror film” style. Even hardcore fans may turn off of women’s mma.

Thats pretty much where I’m at as well. The women’s fights I have seen have been very technically sloppy and both fighters gas very early in the contest. Its a lot like low level independent men’s MMA. That being said I will watch this fight and I’m open to change my opinion.

Is it bad? I thought…if I bet some money on kyle, and put werdum in my parlay with my other favorite, at least if werdum lose I don’t end up naked. Something like a win-win situation. I’m still very new to this betting thing.
You don't look like a Tanaka.
Well, Werdum is a huge favorite… so he doesn’t add a whole lot of value to the parlay. It’d be better to go with someone who isn’t a huge favorite or an underdog for maximum profit.
I see what you’re trying to do, but I don’t think that’s going to work too well with Werdum added onto the parlay. He won’t make you much more money at all. It’d be way better to replace him with ANYONE else.

I worry for Carrano in this fight.
My gut tells me that Cyborg is going to absolutely destroy Carrano in this fight. The only thing Gina has over Cyborg is footwork imo. Cyborg is bigger, stronger, and meaner. I see Cyborg getting Carrano to the ground and keeping her there while unloading punishment. Good luck Gina this fight could get very messy for you.
"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"
Footwork? Try WAY better stand-up striking… way fucking better striking. Cyborg has aggression. If Carano remains elusive, she could tire Cyborg out as well. There are actually multiple ways for Carano to win in my mind.

This.
I also wouldn’t sell Gina short in the wrestling department. A lot of folk are assuming that Cyborg owns an advantage on the ground and I am not so sure. Gina has been training a great wrestling camp (Extreme Couture) for eons now and more than held her own on the ground with solid grapplers like Kedzie and Evinger. Evinger in particular is a very good wrestler and the fact that Gina finished her off with a choke is impressive. That is one more submission win than Cyborg has.
Well, Gina also had a significant size and strength advantage. Speaking of which….
