Baroni Likely Headed Back to UFC:
"Phil Baroni (13-11) has verbally agreed to a contract with the UFC, according to a source close to the fighter. The veteran welterweight’s potential signing will undoubtedly raise a few eyebrows as well as shed some light on the brewing feud between the UFC and rival promotion Strikeforce."

Strange signing, but my guess is that it’s just pulling the rug out from under Strikeforce. Baroni has kinda been their “go to” guy, and I was suprised they didn’t set him against Nick rather than Jay…guess this explains it.

Showtime didn’t want Baroni vs Diaz as a replacement to Riggs. Phil was upset.

The UFC is doing two interesting things:
1. Signing away guys from Strikeforce who aren’t major draws, but at least have an appeal on TV.
2. Releasing fighters who have just lost in the UFC who are either boring or have .500 or below records. If Strikeforce picks they fighters up… And those fighters are successful, it makes them appear to be an inferior organization.
And what happens if Baroni does well in the UFC after getting trounced by Shamrock and Riggs?
=)

It is highly doubtful. Highly doubtful. Highly doubtful…..
And the perception has always been, whether it’s fair or not:
Lose in the UFC, get cut, and then go on a winning stream = Not fighting UFC caliber fighters.
Lose a bunch of fights, but go on winning streak inside the UFC = Greatest Career comeback

I will always remember baroni as being “the best EVER”, well at least for one night.
You don't look like a Tanaka.
I will always remember him for using Dave Menne’s head as a speedbag.
That and for punching Larry Landless.

For people who bash the UFC and praise Strikeforce…. When is the last time the UFC has sent out a press release saying they released a fighter, and then went on about how he lost 4 of his last 7 fights?
Strikeforce sent a press release about Phil Baroni…
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE STRIKEFORCE RELEASES PHIL BARONI SAN JOSE, Calif. (Aug. 13, 2009) – Phil “The New York Badass” Baroni has been released by world championship mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion STRIKEFORCE. The 33-year-old Baroni, a native of Long Island, N.Y, has lost four of his last seven bouts. In his last appearance, a welterweight (170 pounds) matchup with Joe "Diesel’’ Riggs at St. Louis, Missouri’s Scottrade Center, Baroni sustained a one-sided defeat by way of unanimous judges’ decision. "We wish Phil the best of luck and hope he can revive his career,‘’ STRIKEFORCE Founder and CEO Scott Coker said Thursday. “If he can, maybe one day, he can return and fight for us.” Baroni’s most noteworthy fight in STRIKEFORCE was also the first STRIKEFORCE middleweight (185 pounds) MMA championship bout in history on June 22, 2007. Refusing to tap out, Baroni was choked unconscious by four-time world champion Frank Shamrock in the second round (4:00) of action.

Cold.

Dude, he is in the UFC.
You don't look like a Tanaka.
He was upset he was passed over as a replacement for Joe Riggs against Nick Diaz. I don’t know how he could have been upset since Joe Riggs just beat him a few months ago. He will always be an exciting fighter though. =)

Go on and spin that release. Please.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
Huh? Baroni said that himself on the UG.

maybe they’re gonna start staging historical reenactments of classic fights.
wonder who else they’ll try to bring back into the fold. anyone ever figure out what buentello’s status is?
I wouldn’t mind seeing Buentello back in the UFC; as a gatekeeper, he’d be a hell of a lot more exciting than the retread wrestlers they occasionally use, and it’s not like he doesn’t have any skills. He’ll never be top tier, but he comes to fight and he can KO almost anybody who doesn’t take him seriously.

Baroni is going to submit GSP with his accent…

I see your point, GSP’s has much more condescension to it, then again that could just piss off the NYBA enough to win.

Can they get him for commentary? Seriously, Baroni as the 3rd man in the booth. Think about it.

Wow, makes the Frank Trigg signing look fantastic.
Maybe Baroni is meant to fill the 25th ranked fighter slot in UFC Undisputed 2010 instead of having to make up a fake fighter. I bet EA never bothered to offer him a contract so he is clear to sign with the UFC.
probly gonna add a “disputed” mode to the second offering of the game where you can play as baroni through every weight classes with commentary by andrew dice clay
