Gegard Mousasi talks about whether the UFC gave him an offer on Sherdog Radio: (audio)

JB: Were you offered and not told about an offer from UFC? Is there a rift between you and your management?

GM: There was no offer from the UFC. There were never negotiations about me going to the UFC. I have a 2 fight deal with DREAM. Even if I wanted to fight in the UFC it wouldn't have happened, I have also signed with EA games and I don't think the UFC is very happy about that. There was no chance I'd go to the UFC. Strikeforce and DREAM let me fight in other organizations, that was the best deal for me.

JB: To dispel all rumors, Is there any difficulty between you and your management at M-1?

GM: No.

it wouldnt be the first time

M1 payed attention to what goes on in blogs, polls and message boards online
and then use it to base judgements/make statements

why the hell should this mess be any different?

Why?

This quote really doesn’t mean anything. He was never offered a contract. We already knew that. He was fed numbers, and called the UFC on those numbers, but they were never an official offer.

Furthermore, he simply says “No”. It really doesn’t matter at this point. He has to fight his contract out, and he already said he wants to box.

everyone said that M1 was screwing him over, but he just said there is no difficulty between him and his management….. so is he lying and is getting screwed over still by his management??

and i am still confused? why would Mousasi even be expecting offers from the UFC when he knows he still has 2 fights left with Dream?

I don’t know. But if he wasn’t expecting an offer, why did he call Joe Silva?

I haven’t seen him deny calling Joe Silva. If he called Joe Silva, there’s an issue between him and his management.

JB: Were you offered and not told about an offer from UFC?

The interviewer obviously didn’t understand the full details of the story. The UFC themselves even said they never made an offer …that was the whole point.

True. All Joe Silva said was that they would have honored his existing Affliction contract due to the Affliction/UFC partnership if they picked him up. They weren’t interested because of the conditions Gegard stated and thus didn’t offer a contract at all.

by villin on Aug 13, 2009 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions

if this is true, do you think Paul Daley and Ben Rothwell got the same deal they had with Affliction?

lol this interview means absolutely nothing. why don’t people do some research before asking irrelevant questions? anyways… here’s a decent question I came up with and it took me 30 seconds:

Where you ever told there was a 40/40 offer from the UFC (even if you didn’t want to go there anyways) and if so from whom did you hear it?

DUH!

Why waste brain power thinking about interview questions when you could remember the names of every Shooto fighter? What kind of interviewer are you?

Something everyone already knew to start with. Heck the entire story has always been that there was no offer made, that was never in question.

You guys are funny. Keep believing everything is all rosy. All this means is that Mousasi wants to keep whatever happened behind closed doors.

Well just because he says he doesn’t have a problem now doesn’t mean that he didn’t have one with them a week ago, you would think that M-1 probably spent the whole last week smoothing things over with him (may also be why the Fedor vs Mousasi exhibition came about). Why would he of no commented the question then but answered it no now? If he had said "no’ then there would of never been any controversy about this at all.

by who me on Aug 13, 2009 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions

what do you base this on???

1. he still has 2 fights with dream
2. he wants to box on showtime
3. the EA deal

so WHY WOULD HE EVEN ENTERTAIN AN OFFER FROM THE UFC, that never existed anyway?

Did you even actually keep up with what was going on with that story last week?

by who me on Aug 13, 2009 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

yes… everybody is saying M1 made up a UFC offer, and had him sign with Strikeforce instead,, and Joe Silva said there was no offer, but they wouldve guaranteed the affliction contract if there was.

If you didn’t see it the first time, I doubt you will the second. Just remember that what a person doesn’t say is often more important than what he does. Word choices also have connotations attached with them, and the timing of statements is also important.

What it boils down to is Mousasi almost certainly had issues with his management a few weeks ago, and since then they have either made up or he is planning on jumping ship as soon as he can. I personally think they have come to a new arrangement and Mousasi probably has some dirt on them.

A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

by iiowyn on Aug 13, 2009 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

So why do you keep going on about how there was no contract offer? We all know there was never a contract offer, the whole point of the entire controversy was that there never was any contract offer from the UFC.

by who me on Aug 13, 2009 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Editorial Note by Brent Brookhouse: Bottom line: M-1 lied to Mousasi to get him to sign a deal they wanted him to sign. They looked out for their own interests instead of his. They violated their duty to the client. The fact that Joe said they didn’t make an offer is actually worse. It means that rather than lying about the numbers offered they cut off any potential negotiations by claiming a poor offer was made before the UFC had a chance to establish a starting point for negotiations.

can someone point to where Mousasi was lied to by M1?

I just did and I even sited a direct quote from Mousasi saying that his management talked to Joe Silva about a UFC contract back in late July. We know that didn’t happen.

Gegard Mousasi talks about maybe going to the UFC July 22nd

“My manager told me that he had spoke to Joe Silva, the matchmaker of the UFC,” Mousasi said. "I think that it’s a possibility for me to fight (in the UFC) if I want to fight. But the UFC I think would be better for me at a later stage of my career.

Joe Silva: Aug 7th

"Apy called me about a week later, wanting to clarify things. He said that there was some miscommunication between his fighter and management. The tone of the call was very polite," Silva explained.
But when Silva inquired as to how all of this started, that’s when things got a little murky.
"Apy told me that he had a UFC source tell him that we were going to offer 40/40, and it was relayed to Mousasi. I asked Apy who the source was, and he declined to tell me. I explained that we never offered any sort of deal, and things sort of ended there," Silva continued.
http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2009/8/6/980383/joe-silva-talks-gegard-mousasis

Back in July Mousasi was saying that his management had talked to the UFC and it was possible for him to go there but as has been established the UFC wasn’t even trying to contact Mousasi’s management due to the EA issue. So we have a direct quote from Mousasi back in July saying his manager talked to Silva and the UFC was possible and we have Silva saying that he didn’t and it wasn’t and no offer was made at all, obviously something fishy went on in this situation. Why would Mousasi’s management tell him that they had discussed him going to the UFC with Joe Silva back in July if they hadn’t? Why would Mousasi say that in an interview back in July unless that is what his management had told him?

It should also be noted that Apy Echteld(Aug 6th) said there was contact with the UFC regarding Mousasi’s contract in the past, of course Joe Silva says their wasn’t because of the EA issue. It’s not like this is just coming from Joe Silva there are quotes from Mousasi and Echteld saying that they were in contact with the UFC about a contract when that obviously didn’t happen.

Apy Echteld confirms there were contact with the UFC regarding Mousasi’s contract in this past, wouldn’t go into detail, but said Mousasi’s happy with Strikeforce contract and will honor it. Confirms the UFC tried to step in and stop the Babalu-Mousasi fight and says they wanted Mousasi the "cheap and easy way."
