UFC Counterprogramming of Strikeforce Too Much, Not Enough or Just Right
From the too much angle, Jason Bent of MMA Torch:
Many folks still haven't even paid the cable bill for the purchase of the UFC 100 PPV and one month later the choice has been made to air the best parts of the show for free on Spike TV.
Look, this show did 1.71 million PPV buys and was covered on ESPN and yes, everyone has seen the aforementioned main card bouts. However, it is a true disservice to your fans when you told them how important it was to PAY for this show, when they could have watched it for FREE a month later and this time you will actually get to see Jon Jones vs. Jake O'Brien and Stephan Bonnar vs. Mark Coleman, which were two fights most of us actually wanted to see.
...It just is wrong to the fans who paid for this show and it shows that while Dana is going for the jugular, that he feels the need to compete against Strikeforce. If your competition truly does not matter, then let them fail on their own. If you truly believe they are incompetent and their efforts are futile, why then would you want to smack them around?
From the not enough camp, Maggie Hendricks:
So that leaves Spike with UFC and Brock Lesnar fans from his days of MMA. Guess what? Those people, the ones loyal to Dana White and the UFC no matter what, wouldn't turn on Showtime on Saturday night if it were the last station left on Earth.
If the UFC was serious about taking viewers away from Strikeforce, then they should have done what they did last July, when "Affliction: Banned" aired. Put together an Ultimate Fight Night, have some live action to combat live action.
This round of counterprogramming is just silly, and won't do anything to hurt the strong card that Strikeforce has put together, despite its bad luck.
As for me, I'll be happy to DVR UFC 100 and get to see the Jones vs O'Brien and Bonnar vs Coleman and Grice vs Gugerty on my TV screen. But I'll be watching Strikeforce live on Showtime. Mmmm, just right, tastes like competition.

I think it’s just right for what it’s job is.
To the guy saying that it’s too soon, it’s worth the money to find out what’s happening live. It loses a lot of it’s luster a month after, plus, it’s much more than the turnaround time for your average boxing ppv.
The addition of the undercard fights is perfect to steal away some hardcore fans. Not from watching the whole show, but from at least getting them to dvr it so they can see Jon Jones. I’m sure there will be some down time in the showtime card, and even hardcore fans will flip over to spike and if they turn it on , and if they turn it on during the Jon Jones fight, they’re going to stick around till the end of that fight, which makes Spike and the sponsors happy.
besides all that, it would be insanely stupid for Spike TV, on their own, to not air MMA/UFC programming on a day where they know MMA fans will be home watching TV. The better content Zuffa gives them, the better it is for them.

i PAY for my ppv events. i PAY for tapout shirts that i wear ONLY during fights (otherwise you look like a deuche, i wear it like a sports jersey).
i support my sport, i don’t feel like i got screwed when they air the fight for free a month later.

Yea. Dana White should have told us on July 10 that the best fights from UFC 100 will air on Spike for FREE in August so if you don’t want to help make this one the most successful PPV’s in UFC history, you should just NOT buy it and wait until then. WTF? That’s a GREAT business maneuver! Did this guy Jason actually re-read what he wrote? Christ…

if i wanted to watch it free, i know exactly how and have it on my computer… but i dont use it for UFC. i want to see my favorite sport grow. alot of people know how to watch it live for free, but everybody knows how to watch it free the next morning, but you have to see it live.
1 month later… i would never consider skipping a UFC to watch it a month later for free.

I rather pay $50 to watch it LIVE
I don’t get the argument that it’s “unfair” for those who bought the live PPV.
I rather pay $50 to watch it LIVE than $0 to see it free one month later, after I already know the results. What fun is that?
I think they’re counterprogramming is awesome, cuz now I can DVR it and watch the undercard fights that I missed! If I was gonna be around, I’d still be watching the Strikeforce show live on Showtime at my buddy’s house. (But I’m gonna be in Vegas, ironically, this weekend – don’t think they’ll be showing it anywhere on the UFC’s home turf tho lol)

I’d rather get the box from Verizon and be done with it. I like to use my laptop while I watch TV anyway. And what happens when I want to take my laptop with me somewhere but I want to record a show? I think Maggie Hendricks really has zero clue as far as the reality of Strikeforce vs. UFC goes. She’s off her rocker, here on the East Coast there has been zero promotion of this event other than what they did in New York which was quickly and easily forgotten, nobody around D.C. that I’ve spoken to has any clue that this event is even happening this weekend and don’t know what I’m talking about when I even say “Strikeforce”; hell, most of them think it’s a Stallone or Norris action movie…

Look
I love Maggie. She seems to have a really tough time getting the acceptance of MMA fans. I’m not going to draw in conclusions as to why that is (here) but I respect what she does. Having said that, she does seem to be missing the point here. If a RERUN of UFC 100 on Spike can (and will) have a larger viewership than a LIVE Strikeforce event (on a pay channel, stop telling us it’s free when I have to subscribe to something to get it) that is like Randy Couture spanking Tito Ortiz… a little unnecessary, but fun to watch.

Oh no, don’t get me wrong, I typically appreciate her point of view and opinion on things as well as the work she does.
However, every time she goes into this Strikeforce vs. UFC debate she really just overshoots the mark in one direction or another. Trust me, I’m not one of the morons always bashing her writing etc over at CageWriter, I just think that in her past few stories on this topic that she’s just wildly off base.
I’ll be watching Strikeforce (I don’t have showtime, draw your conclusions from that), but I just don’t see it outperforming any sort of counter programming Spike and the UFC put on; which does suck, I believe Strikeforce is a good promotion that has put on some pretty solid fights and it’s a home for the fighters that the UFC will not/cannot host; hell I’d easily throw down some cash to see Babalu and Mousasi fight as well as to see if Gina can really pull out a win over the wrecking ball that is Cyborg.
I’m just very worried that the event will completely flame out and won’t do well, this could end up very bad for Strikeforce as I’m sure Gina and Mousasi for example carry pretty high price tags. Hieron most likely didn’t come cheap either if he was in fact negotiating with both Strikeforce and the UFC.
So don’t get me wrong, not taking a shot at Maggie, maybe sounded a bit harsh, but I just think these articles on Strikeforce/UFC counterprogramming/war etc etc aren’t being substantiated by any real objective evidence.

I paid for it on PPV, and thought it kind of sucked relative to what I was expecting (Wrestlemania). Now, just to rub it in, it is free.

I think he was using “Wrestlemania” figuratively, like when people say “The Super Bowl of MMA.” He felt that UFC 100 was supposed to be the “Wrestlemania of MMA events”, and fell a little short in his eyes.
Anyone who uses Wrestlemania to mean the highest achievement of any sort is auto-added to mental .kill file as well.

Its MMA not pro wrestling. On paper means nothing come fight night. You could have an amazing card and lackluster fights or vice versa. I personally thought 100 was a epic card. Ill watch the reshow to catch Jones and Coleman.

The greatest news I've heard all year!
When I paid attention to boxing
if I knew an event would be aired on HBO after the PPV, I wouldn’t’ bother ordering it and just avoid looking up the results. I could see the casual UFC fanbase taking the same attitude.
I wonder if they will edit out Brock Lesnar’s Rant?

“When I paid attention to boxing if I knew an event would be aired on HBO after the PPV, I wouldn’t’ bother ordering it and just avoid looking up the results. I could see the casual UFC fanbase taking the same attitude.”
It’s not like that anymore, dude. When everyone you know has seen the PPV and everywhere you go on the internet shows the results, it’s a little different than the “boxing” days. Hell even some of the local news shows the damn results. You can’t get away from the results like you used to back in the day.
It will likely hurt Strikeforce.
I buy all the PPVs and them putting them on for free a month later doesn’t bother me. There is something to be said about watching it life, it would lose a LOT of luster if I knew the bouts had come and gone and I already knew the winner.
Strikeforce has a bigger problem. Getting the eyes to their product both from marketing and from access.
1) I’ve seen NOTHING about the match on TV.. at all
2) here in Canada the only way I can watch it is if I pay $45 to watch it on PPV. I ‘might’ have considered paying if I was going to be around but I’m out this weekend and will likely not DVR it but just read the live blogs on my phone/laptop.
The counter programming will hurt Strikeforce but not as much as the fact they expect us dirty Canadians to pay for it.
by pr0cs on Aug 13, 2009 10:15 AM EDT reply actions 1 recs
I really find it odd that they are charging Canadians $45 for the PPV. I keep seeing commercials on DirecTV advertising this event as a $25 PPV. Which actually brings two questions to mind. First why are they charging $20 more to Canadians for the PPV? Secondly what does this say that they are trying to sell this as a PPV for $25 to people that can just order Showtime for around $12 a month?
Just BE.
I don’t feel cheated. And there is no GSP on that card, which was my favorite fight, so whatever.

the counterprogramming
is just right. What do people expect zuffa to do? sit idly by and do nothing while strikeforce tries to take a piece of the pie? that’s silly
by theblade on Aug 13, 2009 10:31 AM EDT reply actions 2 recs
This is great for the fans.....
Do you realize how much bigger MMA is going to get w/ all this counter programming going on? I bet the UFC will show their biggest and best PPV for every Strikeforce event.
More eyes on the product = the show gets bigger. If Strikefroce can roll with the punches, in the end it’s just going to help them get bigger as well.
If they can’t, oh well, better for the fans.
Sidebar: I can’t understand why fans get so upset? In the perfect world there would be only 1 pro MMA league in the world. So the best fighters would fight the best all the time. That’s not the best situation for the fighters, but still. Imagine if there were 2 football or baseball leagues and say the Yankees and Redsox were in totally different leagues and never played each other.
Only if you’re keen on comparing pre-scheduled football games between geographically-entrenched franchises who pool resources to run an organized system with arbitrarily-scheduled fights between athletes that are contracted short-term by a privately-held company that runs a traveling show of events…
This round of counterprogramming is just silly, and won’t do anything to hurt the strong card that Strikeforce has put together, despite its bad luck.

I’ll agree with the posters who have compared this with HBO Boxing, where they air the fights for free on HBO the next week, but the SERIOUS fans who want to see the fight(s) LIVE are paying for the privilege to see it as it happens. If you feel “cheated” because something you paid for and enjoyed at the time is getting seen by people for free a month later, then you’re really saying that your fandom doesn’t run that deep. It also means that you’re selfishly more interested in feeling “special” than helping to see the sport grow.
Also, through competition, we get to see Bonnar-Coleman and Jones-O’Brien for free. BONUS!

I personally will be watching Spike mainly because I didn’t see the prelim fights, I don’t care that I know the results I want to see them
I have tried to sit thru two Strikeforce cards and I just don’t like their production of the fights and the skinless models – their production value is zero
there is no reason to get excited or hyped either, I love that when I watch a UFC card I get all excited, anxious, and pumped for the action – that just doesn’t happen with me and Strikeforce
also when I used to watch boxing all the time on ppv I didn’t care that in a week or two that it would be on HBO, I wanted to see it live regardless – that (to me) was getting my money’s worth

Doesn't HBO Boxing do this ALL the time?
Isn’t it standard protocol for HBO to have their PPV events on “free” HBO the following weekend? True sports fans want to watch the events live. There is no disservice being done here. I’m a hardcore fan so I can’t speak for the casual fans. Still, I’d believe if you even cared enough to drop 50 bucks on UFC 100 you’d want to have seen it before now. The fact they are reshowing it doesn’t bother me at all.
