Actually, I would have held on to that one until Fedor's first fight for Strikeforce.
But then again, tanking their ratings right out of the gate may damn the whole enterprise.

i can’t see this pulling 1 potential viewer. ufc drem 1.72 million PPV buys, everyone who could have possibly wanted to see it, watched that fight only a month ago.
strikeforce is on showtime, a premium cable channel you dont have unless there is something specific you want to watch on that channel. strikeforce draws between 300K-600K viewers.
if you pay for showtime, you’re not going to miss this live event to watch a fight card you just watched last month.
as for the rest of the other “avenues” to watch it live, those people will never drop a dime to pay for showtimes monthly fee and will never contribute to strikeforce’s bottom line.
they’re screwed.

by iiowyn on Aug 12, 2009 2:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But, people that don’t know about the showtime card (which is going to be a lot of people) are going to watch this.
Then you have to take into account the people who are watching the showtime card, see the skinless muscle creatures teaching them how to jab, switch over to SPike, see a fight they never saw before, and get stuck on spike for 15 minutes.
by Phildo on Aug 12, 2009 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I watched my very first Strikeforce event earlier this month (Diaz/Shamrock) that had been sitting on my DVR for a couple of weeks, and the skinless muscle creatures took me buy surprise. It was like creating a moveset on SmackDown vs. Raw or something only instead of something cool like a muscle buster they were showing double leg take downs.
by black dragon on Aug 12, 2009 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That is what I don’t get.
Use them to explain the omaplata and a kimura. show what muscles hurt and what bones are in the process of snapping.
You can demonstrate those moves with real people. You try to explain some of the harder moves with real people and it’s hard to see in video form.
by Phildo on Aug 12, 2009 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If I’m remembering correctly a few of us noticed that the muscle creatures had horrible form while demonstrating an arm bar.

the most watched strikeforce card on Showtime got around 375k viewers and this was a co-promotion with EliteXC.
The counter programming is not just about ratings… counter programming affects ratings but it waters down syndication: bars, get togethers, residual effect post strikeforce card, monday morning water cooler discussions, etc…

Gawd I love counter programming. I hope we all make sure our buddies are watching/recording Showtime so this trend continues. The Carano vs Cyborg fight was gift wrapped for strikeforce with showtime and CBS building this fight up for over a year… yet all indicators show less than a pussy fart of impact will be made by this card. THIS IS AN UTTER PROMOTIONAL FAILURE.
Now some people are predicting Strikeforce is able to build up a foreigner who doesnt speak english and who doesnt have any compelling opponents into a ppv fight in a year… These predictions are based on what exactly???
Strikieforce cant even demonstrate their promotional capabilities on a fight that was already set up for them (95% of the leg work was already done) – This fight in general and Carano in specific was a softball waiting to be hit out of the park.
I always said Zuffa can do nothing to Strikeforce unless they are stupid enough to overextend themselves… and now their King is exposed and just waiting to be taken.
Will Strikeforce completely fold? probably not – but when this is all said and done they will have sacrificed every piece to save their King (most everything they have built up to this point).
When Zuffa is done with them they will be back to where they started and the “niche” they could have owned will be gone.

i stil think they can draw a large audience if they get on CBS, wouldn’t you agree? They’ll never hold a successfull PPV but CBS can market a fight particularly if the MMA audience in generall continues to grow.

How do they make enough money without PPV to afford challengers to the great Edor?

I dont know but I think a large TV audience can still generate several million(5-10mil?) in ad revenue over a 2-3 hr broacast. Thus increasing the amount CBS is willing to pay SF.

CBS could get better ratings than a Fedor fight with CSI reruns.

Only if Strikeforce can draw 8 times the general UFN broadcast. In other words, no.
by Foxskinrug on Aug 12, 2009 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You would think that, but it didn’t do that for Elite.
Maybe zuffa could pull in numbers like that on network tv, but there is still a stigma against mma in the mainstream, and it’s hard to get the big companies to put up the money to advertise on a prime time show.

I’m glad people are still using the name “Edor,” as I personally think it’s far superior to “Fedro.”

The second show on CBS where they didn’t have Kimbo and only proven MMA fighters did lousy… the UFC rerun on spike that same night did like twice the number in the Target demo.
If Strikeforce can get 500k viewers on showtime then they can do Kimbo type numbers on network TV.
If CBS doesnt pick up Fedors second fight then it will most likely be on ppv.
But yeah if Network can be monetized Zuffa will be the one really monetizing it. UFC network projections are more than 2x Kimbo’s numbers. If this can be maintained 4 times a year then not only will this be a great direct revenue generator but also another huge vehicle to add fans into the ppv funnel due to the increasing Zuffa’s distribution channel.

If Strikeforce can get to 500k viewers on showtime and get on CBS then they have effectively lasted the 1st round and will be finished in round 2.
So far only kimbo got 500k plus viewers… no other MMA card on showtime broke 375k viewers.
Cokers problems are only beginning.

You know what would be fun to watch on Saturday night?
Some LIVE fights like the Striekforce card on Showtime and Roy Jones Jr vs Jeff Lacy on HBO. Hell of a night right there filled with live fights.
=)

RJJ and Lacy
isn’t a fight that got me excited…at all. I would rather watch the rerun of PRIDE or UFC 100. I will watch the Strikeforce card even tho I am disappointed Diaz smoked his way out of a title.
by Riney on Aug 12, 2009 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Jones needs to win big here for a money fight, and Lacey was once considered one of the best prospects. It interests me. =)
by MMASuPreMaCy on Aug 12, 2009 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I watched
the Lacy vs Calzaghe fight back in the day. All of Lacys luster has since gone. RJJ is starting to tarnish his legacy too. I wish he would stop fighting.
by Riney on Aug 12, 2009 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That was a dissapointing performance by Lacy, but damn, no one was able to beat Calzaghe, since he is retired now. The reason why I am interested is that it will definitely propel RJJ to a big fight or get Lacy back on the right track.

no it won’t as a big boxing fan.they r sadly both washed up n i wish they would both stop fighting.
everybody else is locked up in the showtime tourney and pavlik-williams r fighting each other.
n neither if they will get a shot at either hopkins or adamek.it’s an irrelevant fight.

Even on CBS there was some sort of tape delay.
i’m not sure how much, but they’ll probably push it as live.

Showtime HD will be delayed but Showtime East will have it live.

I see my man Dana is on the job.....
They simply pissed him off, and now will have to pay. Whole this signing situation, and idiotic lies and missinormation campaign from M-1 side of it will now backfire on Strikeforce… sorry Strikefarce, or maybe Strike-fart:)) sorry – but don’t thing this thing will hold. Maybe forces like CBS will hold it for a while, but then something evil will happen – like someone will do something not acceptable (like getting drunk, or biting someone in the ass) and they will go out with fart….:) don’t get me wrong – I love them, because I love all human beings

if strikeforce had a HBO deal they could do better
because more people are subscribed to HBO then showtime. They could of done probaly double or triple the viewers with then then showtime.

It’s going to be interesting how the replay does as compared to others, this is pretty last minute and with only a couple of days to get promo’s going it might not do the numbers other replays have with weeks of lead time.
