Jose Aldo Unsurprised With Brian Bowles' Victory, Would Consider 135-Pound Superfight

Aldo-11_medium

Before it was announced that Jose Aldo would challenge Mike Thomas Brown for the WEC 145-pound title in the fall, there had been rumors that the Nova Uniao young gun could move down in weight to take on now-dethroned bantamweight king Miguel Torres. The Brazilian phenom spoke to Tatame following Brian Bowles' upset knockout of Torres on Sunday:

"This defeat was no surprise. Miguel is very good, but Bowles has very heavy hands. The guy had already beat Louro [Marcos Galvao] and Will Ribeiro, so I knew he could beat Torres," analyzed Aldo... "Still, it would be interesting to fight with [Bowles], especially because he's beaten those Brazilian fighters. It doesn't cross my mind to go down in weight, but for this fight, I would go down," finished the Nova União black belt.

Hopefully Aldo means it when he says dropping down isn't really on his mind, because he's got the toughest fight of his career coming up in a few months. If he can handle MTB the way he did Cub Swanson, then by all means, make Aldo/Bowles happen. But until then...

Nah

Don’t make Aldo/Bowles happen. The Torres/Bowles rematch is big money, and Bowles will likely face Cruz while Torres pounds someone out for the right ti rematch.

I STILL poop rainbows.

Definitely true!

I knew Bowles was very good, but I had no idea his hands were that heavy. That rematch should be epic & hopefully neither one of them lose their next match so they can meet soon! And I see Aldo getting his but drilled thru the mat by Senor Brown.

Torres won’t foolishly pursue Bowles next time around. I’ve been saying, he needed this to be human again. A lot of guys at the top of their game start to feel invincible, and now he knows he isn’t.

I STILL poop rainbows.

Torres needs to stop getting emotional, as long as he is calm he is a monster, but he makes mistakes when he gets fired up. I actually alluded to this when I predicted the fight with my batshit insane prediction. Also note Bowles’ comments on being so calm at the post fight presser.

A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.

If it is worth saying, it is worth saying more than once, and even more than that.

Agree completely,

I love Torres as a fighter & if this gets him focused on his own strengths rather than trying to beat his opponent at theirs then I am all for it.

Normally I’d be with you. I hate seeing belts tied up for relatively meaningless superfights and catchweight bouts.

But Aldo vs. just about anyone would be fine with me… especially if he loses to MTB, which I suspect he may. Aldo is a speed demon, but Brown just seems so much more powerful. Regardless, it will be an epic clash of facial hair.

Aldo versus either two would be great. I fear that MTB may be too big for Aldo.

That’s my feeling as well, but I’ll be rooting for him (Aldo).

I STILL poop rainbows.

He made his bed

Now he gets to try to sleep in it. I don’t think he should be able to move down for an immediate title shot, though he could be more competitive against the smaller Bowles. And the title isn’t getting tied up if Cruz gets a well earned shot at Bowles. I don’t believe he has much of any shot at beating Bowles, but it’s also not tying up the title for one fight before Torres comes back around. Torres vs. Aldo would be a siiiiiick fight a little further down the line, in a scenario that includes Aldo losing the MTB and Torres reclaiming his crown.

I STILL poop rainbows.

What’s “big money” in the WEC? Like, 30k?

Don’t overlook the beast in front of you Jose.

If Bowles Vs Aldo happens, one of them is getting KOed in the staredown probably.

Keep firing Assholes!

Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.

Yes! This one wouldn’t last long. But Bowles vs. Cruz is a good fight. Brown vs. Aldo should be amazing. And rather than Benevidez, give Torres some time off, let Faber’s hand recover and then Torres/Faber for the right to face the winner of Bowles/Cruz. Faber’s talked about dropping before, or 140 lb. catchweight vs. Torres. Kidding about 140!

If Aldo loses to Brown, and it doesn’t push a current bantamweight contender aside, I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing Bowles/Aldo. Miguel Torres is amazing. He’d probably fight more carefully in a rematch, but Brian Bowles is a badass. Period. Dethroning him is going to be a tall task.

Jose Aldo fan

I just wish Aldo could fight in the UFC at 155, 170 or 185. He’s a solid performer.
