Anderson Silva Does Whatever a Spider Can

If Anderson Silva's deconstruction of Forrest Griffin didn't impress you enough, FightMetric offers up some pretty impressive stats:
* Silva landed 13 of 25 total strikes, for an accuracy percentage of 52%. Silva has still never had a fight in which he landed less than half his attempted strikes.
* If you want to consider Silva's head movement, consider that Griffin landed 1 of 35 strikes thrown to Silva's head, or 3%. The average is 29%.
* With his three knockdowns against Griffin, Silva becomes the only fighter in UFC history with two fights containing three knockdowns. He also did it in the second fight against Rich Franklin.
* The three knockdowns also moves Silva into second place for most knockdowns in UFC history, behind only Chuck Liddell.
One of thirty-five. Jimmy Fallon has a better hit-to-miss ratio.

Why?
This is about Silva, not Forrest. Silva does this to everyone.

In a boxing ring? 10 years ago Jones Jr. takes Silva’s head off and its not even close. I’m more interested in the fight today but Silva is still not the favorite at all even with Jones clearly deteriorated hand speed and reaction time.

Andersons punches wont be as effective. In that fight he was clearly trying to land it on forrests button (hence the jaw injury). With boxing gloves, sometimes you just have to take a few hits.

they did a fight science thing on this with bas rutten. He could generate the same amount of force with with both sized gloves. Force equals mass times acceleration. So the mass may be greater, but you only have a perticular amount of strength with which to move it. So with the same effort, one actually punches faster with mma gloves.
So youve got the same force, 2 different sizes of gloves. MMA gloves are much smaller, smaller surface area. Pressure is force over area, as the area goes up the pressure goes down. Boxing gloves, by nature of having a larger surface area, distribute the pressure of a blow. While it may hurt more, its more of a stinging hurt like getting slapped, where getting hit with an mma glove is more akin to getting hit with a ball peen hammer.
Padding makes a difference. It dampens impact, making it less jarring and less likely to knock your brain around. Same reason you have an air bag in your car and shocks in the suspension, they dampen impact. If I hit someone with a baseball bat, then wrapped it in 4 inches of padding, its not going to do more damage because its heavier.
Resto accused his trainer of putting plaster casting in his gloves. That was never proven.

Not according to basic physics.
More cushion = longer negative acceleration = slower transfer of momentum. Same principle as airbags. That’s why people say boxers with MMA gloves hit harder – less padding to soften the blow.
Try stopping a car over 30s, then try stopping it immediately from the same velocity. Which one is more violent?

“There is also the balance of physics that needs to be taken into account. Smaller gloves mean smaller surface area, which means a smaller area of which the force generated in a punch can dissipate. This would lead one to conclude that an MMA glove creates a more ‘powerful’ punch then a boxing glove. However this is not true for several reasons. First is the issue of protection. The MMA glove provides less protection for the hand of the attacker then a boxing glove, thus his body’s bio-mechanics prevent him from throwing a punch with greater overall power then a boxing punch.”

I remember seeing a Sports Science where they compared a football player’s hit to a rugby hit – the football hit was harder, but more disappated, whereas the hospital pass was half the impact, but all on the lower ribs. Same idea, I guess.

I don’t think they will use either of those guys. Cane isn’t a main event level opponent and the UFC will only use Anderson in main event money fights at 205. I think the same can be said of Shogun at 205.
From a marketing perspective the fight that should happen next is the Axe Murderer at the same catch from the Franklin fight.

Watch how quickly he reacts between the left jab and the right hook. Only the followup left hook is really that sloppy, Silva is just reacting based on the initial shoulder movement. Forrest would only have a chance using feints and guessing where his head should be next.

The judo chop should be on Anderson Silva’s time machine that he uses to pop seconds forward into the future and then go back and dodge shit.
Or if that judo chop is too hard, maybe one about the machine master race that has the human race enslaved in some sort of fancy virtual reality and Anderson figured out how to manipulate that virtual reality and dodge shit.
Either or.

also put something in there about how his head-movement can dodge bullets, which wouldn’t matter because they couldn’t penetrate his cut-proof skin anyway. The .gifs above tell all.

I'd concentrate primarily on his weaves...
To be perfectly honest, he was almost too quick on the weaving. It’s almost as if he studied that combination before the fight, and was weaving in and out of what he believed Griffin would do.
Also Nate… YOU MUST DO the Sotiropoulos guard passing clinic from hell. It’s simply incredible.

Honestly those guard passes were really really basic maneuvers, but I mean basic in the way that they’re not complicated or advanced from a straight grappling perspective, being able to do that while a guy is trying to knock your block off is a different story.
The most amazing thing about his ground work were the submission feints and attempts, he was putting that shit together at incredible speed.

Spider scouted Forrest so well. Look at him after that first left jab – Spider pulls back IMMEDIATELY. He ducks and jives then strikes and lands. Thats a gameplan. He knew to pull back before Forrest even started tho throw. He dogs the flurry and smashes Forrest square. Unreal.

Wow. This is awesome.
Good work BE. This is why I keep coming back for more. Reading the commentary on here…everyone salivting over his performance… wow. Most of it is even true, too. But wow. Silva by “silva-kenitic KO”. I’m still waiting on the post titled “Anderson Silva would easily KO Ali, Frasier, and Foreman all combined into one super-human monster”
The man has unbelievable striking. That is a fact. If there any possibility that one day he fights someone with a chin, they just run across the cage, football tackle him, ragdoll him on the ground for 25 minutes and pound his face? I know… even mentioning that is “idiotic”.

Wasn’t that guy supposed to be Dan Henderson, who had previously never been knocked out, had the superior wrestling, and was an all-around savvy veteran?
by madiq on Aug 10, 2009 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yep, and consequently, he is the only person that has come even close to testing Silva.
Hendo took him down, controlled him, and worked him for most of the first round. Then Silva pulled a sweet submission in Rd. 2 b/c (in my opinion) Hendo got stupid (like he does from time to time) and abandoned his strategy by deciding to stand and bang with Silva. Then he got frusterated and got submitted. I think Silva-Hendo 2 is a great match, and I really don’t understand why everyone seems to be thumbing their noses at it.
by P4P is a stupid concept on Aug 10, 2009 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I guess it’s because the “only person that has come even close to testing Silva” didn’t make it out of the second round of a 5-round fight.
by madiq on Aug 10, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
So by that logic, the best possible matchup for Silva is Silva-Leites 2. I’m pretty sure nobody wants to see that.

I think the logic
was that Leites had the ground skills to be a legit threat to Anderson; however, Leites lacked the skill to actually get Anderson into that position. Henderson had the skill to get the fight to that position, but perhaps lacked the skill to mount a serious threat.

Because the guy who was supposed to beat him got whipped. Soundly. In the second round. On the ground.

Henderson lost, but to say he got “soundly whipped” is a bit overkill. Hendo easily won the first round. Then Silva pulled off a great submission. That is hardly “getting whipped”. He just lost.
by P4P is a stupid concept on Aug 10, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think you should watch the second round again. He got battered on the feet, chased into pulling guard (like Thales Leites), and submitted by a guy who wasn’t willing to go to the ground against Forrest Griffin. Heck, watch the first round again and see how little damage he did.
People keep saying, “the key is to take him down,” but the last two guys that tried that – a BJJ black belt and an Olympic wrestler – got submitted.
Look, every round starts on the feet, and every time that happens, Hendo is risking having his block knocked off. And even if he takes it to the ground, his GnP has been proven to be ineffective against Anderson. What’s his new strategy going to be?

He doesn’t need a new strategy. Let’s go with your assumption that he didn’t do any damage when he had side-control on Silva for the entire first round- First, he covered Silva’s mouth most of the round. If you ever had that done to you…it sucks. Not breathing easily plus having a guy on top of you wears on you in a hurry. That might not be “damage”, but it counts for something. Second, if Dan had done that for even 2 more rounds, and not gotten KO’d or Submitted, he would have won the fight by decision.
His strategy is simple: 1. Don’t lose by KO or Sub. 2. Dance with the one that brought you (in his case, wrestling).
by P4P is a stupid concept on Aug 10, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
that being said....
I have this sneeking suspision that Dan is going to pull one of his old tricks- totally junk his wrestling and try to go toe-to-toe with Silva. Not a good idea.

a) He always does. Could somebody explain that he’s not that great a boxer?
b) All that first round did was give frustrate Silva – did he look tired or injured going into the second round? He just looked mad when he stood up to me.
c) Not getting submitted is evidently harder than it sounds – and Dan hasn’t been out trying to build up his BJJ skills from what I can tell.
d) Dancing with the one that brought him would mean fighting more puffed up TUF fighters like Bisping. Maybe he should kick Forrest’s ass next instead.

The problem was that Dan was the one that got worn down by that strategy. He was sucking wind coming out for the second round and I pointed that out to everybody that I was watching it with and called for the finish by Silva. The point that people miss is how Silva controlled Dan even though he was on top. He held him down close to his chest and didn’t allow him to get any power on his shots all the while conserving his energy. Can Dan beat Silva? Well, as far as I’m concerned he has the best shot out of the middleweights and I agree that he has the type of plan to beat him. I don’t think it happens though. And his strategy is take him down, lay on top of him, and hold him for 25 minutes because he will lose the fight standing by KO or by getting out pointed and can’t sub Silva if he’s on bottom and will just get pounded out or eventually subbed.
