Mirko Cro Cop vs. Junior Dos Santos Possible for UFC 103

Bdedcfc9ffac64c2cab976c6aabba270_mediumPromoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.

In what promises to be an explosive matchup between new school and old school heavyweight contenders MMA Mania is reporting a possible matchup between Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipovic and Junior 'Cigano' Dos Santos. From Junior dos Santos in GracieMag:

"They took me off the August 29 show. My opponent’s changed. I’ll probably face Cro Cop. If I beat him I’ll be in really good standing. If that’s truly the case, I’m guaranteed on the main card and in the main event of the evening. If I were to fight now it wouldn’t be on the main card…. To me it’s incredible. When they asked me if they could change the fight date I was a bit bothered, because I wanted to fight right away. I’ve been away for some time now. But the Fertitta brothers asked me and I accepted. After that I found out it would be against Cro Cop and was overjoyed. It’ll be a big opportunity in my career. Lots of good things have happened in my life and this is one more. I’m going to make the most of it."

Star-divide

This would be a very interesting bout that could very well decide who is the #2 contender in the HW division behind the winner of the Shane Carwin-Cain Velasquez fight. If everything gets worked out between the UFC and Cro Cop this would be a great matchup for Dos Santos to really establish himself as one of the top young heavyweights in the world. If Cro Cop wins it would probably get him one solid win away from a title shot.

I have Dos Santos in this one. The UFC wants CC to pass on his luster to the new young prospect that they are turning into a star

I'm still not impressed by Werdum

I think Mirko will handily out-strike him en-route to a stoppage. One head kick from Gonzaga and people act like Mirko’s chin is equal to that of Jonathan Goulet’s. The man’s been in there with Wandy (x2), Vovchanchyn, Mark Hunt, and Aleks…not to mention his K1 experience.

Sure, everyone agrees it’s not the same Mirko from the Pride days, but Dos Santos has one KO over a BJJ black belt and a TKO that wasn’t all that devastating over another submission guy, and now everyone’s predicting that he’s going to KO Cro Cop?

Well, he got blasted by Kevin Randleman too.

Ehhh?

I don’t think I can keep up w/ the Cro Cop soap opera…. so he didn’t sign w/ DREAM and is still going to fight in the UFC?

cro cop cancelled his fight on the DREAM card against mighty mo.

According to MMAWeekly.com’s sources, Cro Cop has dropped out of an announced fight with Siala “Mighty Mo” Siliga at Dream 10 on July 20.
.
Though it’s conceivable that Cro Cop could make both fights, it appears he has chosen to remain inside the Octagon.

I figured either you or MMASupremecy would be able to answer the question.

In no way would that be conceivable, either CC smarted up and kept to his word or he’ll never fight in the UFC again period.

JDS by KILL to make CC MIA.

You have two Heavyweight strikers going at it. If this fight comes to fruition, it should end in a KO or TKO.

Ugh, TERRIBLE!

Zuffa is killing me. They could bank on some easier fights for CC in Europe or Asia, but they want to test him and actually listen to him? Give me a break.

CC doesn’t look good. Santos might actually kill him.

We have the same analysis,

But I’m happy cause I like dos santos.. And this could make him look real good.

Depending on how far down the rabbit hole you want to go with conspiracy theories, it could be the UFC’s way of punishing CC for trying to abscond to Japan after the much-ballyhooed return. [Adjusts tin-foil hat]

Iole’s Comments:
- “Filipovic informed UFC president Dana White that he had signed a three-fight contract with the Japan-based DREAM.”
- “Cro Cop is absolutely, 100 percent going to fight in DREAM. His quotes were an attempt to save face.”
- “He plans to run for political office again, … ,doesn’t want a story in the public that he went back on his word. That, of course, is exactly what he did.”
- “Bank on the fact that he will never fight in the UFC again.”
Sergio Non:
- “Filipovic told UFC officials that he has signed a three-fight deal with the Japanese organization Dream, … , The news was later confirmed to me in an e-mail from Mike Kogan, who runs the U.S. operation of Dream’s parent company, Fighting and Entertainment Group.”
Josh Gross:
- "Less than a week after apparently snubbing the UFC for Japanese mixed martial arts promoter Dream, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic has agreed to fight Siala “Mighty Mo” Siliga on July 20 in Saitama."

So if Mirko just signed a contract with the UFC, all of the above – which was stated as definitive truth – turned out to be rubbish. Signing with the UFC means you havn’t signed with Dream and you are not set to fight anyone. Judging by Mirko’s comments he was just considering his options.

The only way you go from complete certainty to completely false – in my opinion – is if you can’t research and report a situation properly. The derivitives of these reports in blogs ranging from fightopinion to mmajunkie slammed Mirko over this situation and damaged his reputation. Dana White and Mike Kogan aren’t decent sources on a situation like this because they are biased officials (something I said at the time), and it turns out now that they were just blasting and bragging. We really need some editing standards in this form of reporting, or at least some accountability for reporting junk and damaging a fighters standing.

Exactly. These sites get their revenue through advertising and the more hits they generate the more they get paid. If they aren’t the first to get the stories out then they aren’t gonna get the numbers in. With that the output isn’t going to be as reliable, but this could at least be acknowledged in their articles. They could easily change the language from fact to rumour, from certainty to a likelyhood.

I would rather be informed over the course of events than not informed at all, but that doesn’t mean the writers have to sell what they’re saying as truth, when the facts aren’t all in.

What if.....

What if Crocop actually wins?

They give him winner of Mir/Lesnar maybe, presumeably Lesnar, who he knocks the F out.

Then due to his disdain for how Dana handled the recent situation he promptly leaves the UFC, fights and loses to Fedor to unify the Heavyweight belts undisputedly. Even if under contract I don’t think Crocop gives a shit. He can’t be tied up in court like Randy.

I don’t believe it either, but c’mon play along.

Also have to point out this is the second time (fitch) a Fertita has had to come in and undermine Dana’s authority due to Dana’s emotional decision making.

It’s classic good cop, bad cop. This isn’t anyone undermining anyone’s authority.
