If I Were Joe Silva - Part 2
Back in December, I decided to play UFC matchmaker by taking on the role of the always mysterious Joe Silva, and putting together potential match-ups that I thought would be both entertaining and significant in regards to the standing of each fighter within their respective weight class. I didn't end up doing so hot: out of the twenty-nine fights I booked last time as wannabe-Joe Silva, only one turned into a bout that Joe Silva himself actually booked (Heath Herring vs. Cain Velasquez - but of course that one didn't even end up happening). These aren't really predictions though, but rather a thoughtful wish-list.
As we're now on the verge of UFC 100, and with the UFC's numerous fall events starting to fill up quickly, I've decided to roll out my second version of Fantasy UFC Matchmaker 2009: Undisputed. Once again, I'm using only those fighters who are not currently confirmed or rumored to be fighting on future cards. Fighters who are rumored to be fighting "TBA", and those are who currently injured or suspended but are still under contract to the UFC, are fair game. Like Joe Silva, I'm also trying to include two types of match-ups: those that draw in viewers and PPV revenues/TV ratings, and those that may not seem as entertaining on paper, but are important for determining contenders within each division. The list is also a combination of fights that I really want to see, and fights that I think make sense and might just happen in the near future.
I'm not going to provide any commentary or rationale for any of the match-ups...I'm asking you to do that as I did last time. Let me know what you think. Would you plunk down 50 bucks to see some of these on PPV? Or are some of them so meaningless that you wouldn't even tune in to a free Fight Night event to see them? Tell me which ones you like, which ones you would change, or give me some completely new pairings that you want to see.
So without further ado...

Yes, 15 minutes of horrible striking by two great grapplers, I can’t wait!
Due to Cheick Kongo's atrocious takedown defense....
Walla walla walla, I’m an idiot
Some people might say that winning a fight makes you a better fighter but I don’t agree with that.- BlueberryMuffin

Since when
has Guida shown any inclination to strike for more than 15 seconds of any given round? ;)

I thought about doing it that way
but I decided to match up the two that are coming off wins and the two that are coming off losses.

that's the way to do it.

That’s a mean thing to do to Karo.
I am desperate for Franklin/Cane, and Silva may not have any choice – the LHW cupboard is pretty bare right now as everyone is booked.
I humbly submit Cantwell/the winner of Jones/O’Brien (read: Jones) for your approval.

Karo probably deserves an easier opponent
for his first post-suspension fight, but I’ve wanted to see the Hughes match-up for a long-time. I wouldn’t mind seeing Karo vs. Lytle or Marcus Davis instead.
As far as Cantwell vs. Jones – I think Jones would toss him around the ring worse than he did to Bonnar. I’m not completely sold on Cantwell yet and think Jones is a couple steps ahead of him in grand scheme of things. I want to see Cantwell tested by someone with slick BJJ in his next fight…he’s almost exclusively fought strikers in his career.

I'd actually like to see
Mike Swick take on Matt Hughes next so a Karo VS Marcus Davis fight would be a very very interesting fight

I’m not too fond of Matt Brown vs. Anthony Johnson, mainly because I like the two of them and want to see each one have continued success in the division.
I would have to take Rumble by TKO if it were to happen.

Funny this is the last post – I was just gonna chime in on that one too, but with a different slant.
The matches are mostly very well thought. But Brown v. Johnson stood out to me as the one fight where someone (mainly Brown) could possible seriously be murdered. I’m not trying to hate on The Immortal, I kinda like the guy too. I just think that Johnson will, in the not too distant future, become a great and long reigning champ. He just has way too many natural skills and is one of the most athletic WWs in the division.
So there.

Krystof Soszynski vs. Tomasz Drwal
You chose this just to annoy people saying and typing it didn’t you? =P

Ain't no thing
Those 2 are relatively easy names in this language.
More importantly I’m interested in why people are so hell-bent on this fight. Is it just the nationality angle?
