GSP
Couldn’t agree more…huge fight for St. Pierre. We will see how good St. Pierre really is after his fight Saturday.
Respectfully…huh?
We need Alves to see how good GSP is? Beating Penn, Hughes, Fitch, Karo, Sherk, Trigg, Miller and numorous others was not enough?
Honestly, this fight will show us just how good Alves is. We know how good GSP is.
Agreed, but since he’s never faced a really great striker like Alves, it’ll be nice to check that box as well, yes?
Of course, the MMAth tells us that GSP > Fitch > Alves, but still. People have different problems with different styles.

GSP hasn’t faced as good a MT striker in the UFC as Alves, but BJ Penn and his best boxing in MMA was supposed to own GSP in the standup game, and BJ had the amazing bottom game on the ground as well to threaten GSP if he did get it to the ground. Every fight is supposed to be a challenge unlike GSP has ever seen, but he’s been obliterating those challenges with amazing ease. A win over Alves would just further cement his legacy.
Oh for sure. Anybody putting money on Alves is – short of a freak knockout – going to be spending Sunday looking for rent money. But at this point, GSP is the most dominant welterweight of all time. We’re just making him try one of everything before pitting him against A.Silva.
It’s like that “Does it Blend?” guy. Sure GSP is gonna destroy a striker, a grappler, a wrestler or a judoka – but we still want to watch, right?

Agreed. It’s a very compelling fight. Alves is a different style of striker, as you mentioned, and he’s got some great wins against top WW contenders. He’s young, physically very strong, and trains at a great camp. As a whole, those are characteristics that could give GSP trouble, if Alves can dictate the fight on his terms, at the range he needs it to be.
Though if he beats A.Silva, all that’s left is Fedor and the proverbial bear.

I agree. A loss to Alves and all of a sudden, GSP is just a great fighter who went on a great 5 fight streak. Alves becomes to the new #1 WW and GSP has to regroup to make another charge at the title. A win for GSP and he firmly places himself unchallenged at the top of the division and as dominant a champ in his division as there has ever been really.
Alves is the one that has to answer questions, not GSP.
Can Alves overcome the 6+ inch reach advantage of GSP?
Can he stop his takedowns?
Will having to make 170 instead of 171 be an issue?
What happens if this goes to the championship rounds, does he have the gas tank for it?
Huh?
Did Dana just say that Fitch was a 155lb fighter? Or did he just forget about him? Slip of the tongue and meant to say, “two of the last 3?”
CONFUSED.

I guess he was thinking about Penn and Serra. I hope so anyway. There’s no way Fitch makes 155 without having numerous amputations

It would be nice to see Fitch tear up the light weight division, there wouldn’t be much of a challenge for him there.
I dunno – he’s a big 170 – to make 155 he’d probably have to cut off one of his legs. And at that point, I think he might have some problems. :-)
