Still shows up as MMA for me as well and I’ve never visited the yahoo sports page before so it’s not a cache issue or anything. Wonder why it’s showing UFC for some and MMA for others.

Makes sense to me

NFL> Pro Football
MLB> Pro Baseball
NBA> Pro Basketball
NHL> Pro Hockey
UFC> Pro MMA

Sorry guys

by Lewish on Jul 7, 2009 11:14 PM EDT reply actions

I wouldn’t even mind except that I cringe when people call it “Ultimate Fighting.”

by Ahhhoki on Jul 7, 2009 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

thats because..

those are the major promoters of the individual sports. Without the NFL, you have small time shows like the CFL or AFL. Without MLB you have… nothing?

In MMA there are a few big promotions, but there is clearly a big dog in the UFC. Even though this isn’t big news, to me this is like Yaho Sports is saying that Strikeforce, Affliction, Dream are all on par with the Arena Football league.

by Discman2 on Jul 7, 2009 11:27 PM EDT up reply actions

well MLB is a monopoly, they have anti-trust exemption from the US Govt, thats why Roger Clemens can go before Congress.

watchkalibrun.com

by Zak Woods on Jul 7, 2009 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions

They ARE on par with the Arena League. Especially in the mainstream.

And this may be better:

NFL= No. 1 Pro Football Organization in the US
MLB= No. 1 Pro Baseball Organization in the US
NBA= No. 1 Pro Basketball Organization in the US
NHL= No. 1 Pro Hockey Organization in the US
UFC= No. 1 Pro MMA Organization in the US

I’m still LOLing at all the “hardcores” who are so offended by this.

by Lewish on Jul 8, 2009 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

but again, the difference is that yahoo only covers NFL and not Arena football,

but they cover UFC, and all of the other MMA promotions.

Golden boy (or toprank) is the biggest Boxing promotion, but they didn’t name the tab, GOLDEN BOY, cause they also cover other promotions..

same with golf..

by Anton Tabuena on Jul 8, 2009 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

but don’t get me wrong, my panties arent all tied up because of this, i just get why people are bitching…

Golf> Pro Golf.

F*ck I hate exceptions. Curse you PGA!!

by Sokonojudo on Jul 7, 2009 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

There’s a big difference between MMA and the big four. Yahoo doesn’t cover the CFL, for instance. Soccer isn’t MLS, Tennis isn’t ATP, Golf isn’t PGA, etc.

Unless Yahoo’s culling their non-UFC coverage?

Spot on. And more odd would be the timing of this. Right now in the US there are more sources of quality MMA than ever before. Why the change now if not driven by the UFC to further push there stance that MMA = UFC and quell the flow of rising competition?

I would be interested in knowing if they receive more hits with the UFC headline instead of the MMA headline. It would be interesting to take a poll with the general public and see how many know what MMA is compared to what UFC is. I think UFC will garner more attn. than MMA

by mo dogg on Jul 7, 2009 11:24 PM EDT reply actions

I can tell you, from a newspaper perspective:

It’s rare we don’t try to get UFC into a headline, mostly for SEO purposes. MMA too, but UFC is the focus. It’s where the traffic is.

If you see Mark Coleman in person, drop $5 on the floor and watch the fun as he tries in vain to bend down and pick it up.

by Ozzz on Jul 7, 2009 11:30 PM EDT up reply actions

This is probably why they did it. Although I just did a google search of the two terms and there was only about a half million difference in amount of hits.

by Zack Gobie on Jul 7, 2009 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

UFC=more hits than mma, they’re just trying to use the internet properly

No worries, they are all UFC style too, so its perfectly fine.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jul 8, 2009 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes, puzzling to the fans who frequent this website, but...

Strikeforce, Dream, etc… mean nothing to the general sports fan. The fact is, more people will click on a tab that says “UFC” than “MMA.” It’s all about traffic. Not about appealing to us hardcore fans who sometimes take offense to the fact that there is world of great MMA outside of the UFC…

by peauxboy on Jul 8, 2009 9:13 AM EDT up reply actions

as a “sport” (which we are often told this is by UFC brass) it is MMA media’s duty to cover MMA. While the UFC is clearly the biggest, to name your coverage as such is odd IMO

I get why they did it tho

Not only that, but from a design perspective, they may have chosen to go with NHL or NFL instead of Hockey or Football for clarity (ie football as distinct from soccer) or simply for the amount of text required in the already squishy menu there. But MMA was already listed and its the exact same number of letters as UFC and better represents their coverage.

If they simply chose to use UFC instead of MMA in the first instance, fair enough, but they’ve actively changed it at a time when if anything, the development of strikeforce and the introduction of Affliction could have driven the opposite change from UFC to MMA in their menu. Very odd.

by GeeDub on Jul 8, 2009 4:30 AM EDT up reply actions

NFL> Pro (American) Football
MLB> Pro Baseball
NBA> Pro Basketball
NHL> Pro Hockey

Is because the above are all North American only sports. Every ‘international’ sport (i.e. Tennis, Football, Boxing, Golf, Rugby) is called by the name of the sport. The UFC dominates North American right now. The rest of the world is lagging behind, however there’s the potential that MMA will become a US centric sport which I sincerely hope it does not.

by SocketX on Jul 8, 2009 3:35 AM EDT reply actions

The UFC paid them it's that simple

Sounds like horseshit to me to say that americans don’t know what mma is , anyone who would bother to read about the UFC in the first place would know what mma is. Can you really be interested in the UFC enough that you read about it in the internet and NOT know what mma is ? No way . Mixed martial arts or mma is said in every UFC broadcast or promo multiple times because it’s the name of the damn sport .
The UFC probably made a deal with Yahoo to get their brand there , it’s a very big site so it makes sense for the UFC.

by JoelMan on Jul 8, 2009 6:13 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Since you can buy UFC PPV through the Yahoo site, this seemed like an obvious business move to me. They must get a commission or something through the PPV sales, so their incentive to do this there, even if the UFC isn’t outright paying them to do it.

by Stanlee on Jul 8, 2009 7:27 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s just plain wrong.

The majority of the people that order UFC PPVs don’t know what MMA is, they don’t know what Strikeforce is, they don’t know who Fedor is.

Yahoo is trying to get them to click on the link, its that simple.

by Phildo on Jul 8, 2009 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Can you show me the poll numbers supporting this? I know this is what everybody seems to think, but I have yet to see any real evidence.

by FRANKIE on Jul 8, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

The poll numbers are the fact that Brock vs Randy sells a million PPVs while Fedor struggles to break 100k.

That Randy vs Brock 3 months old and on spike beats Pro Elite on CBS.

I’ve posted a link above showing that UFC is twice as popular as MMA on the internet according to google trends. People know the UFC, they don’t know MMA when you step outside the MMA bubble.

by Phildo on Jul 9, 2009 5:10 AM EDT up reply actions

OK but it’s still a strech to say people don’t know the name of the sport they’re watching , I know some people are dumb but still…

by JoelMan on Jul 9, 2009 7:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Listen to sherdog from around when Undisputed came out.

TJ went to get the game and midnight and no one knew what sherdog was, and only one person knew what MMA was.

Go to a bar showing UFC 100 and ask people if they know what MMA is, most people will say no.

It’s not a stretch when those people never hear the name of the sport. Their only experience with the sport is UFC shows, and how often do they say MMA?

by Phildo on Jul 9, 2009 9:43 AM EDT up reply actions

So they think it’s called cage fighting or ultimate fighting or what ? That’s really dumb if it’s true . I don’t know about Dana Whtie but I know for sure Joe Rogan and prominent fighters like GSP , Couture or Florian say mma when they need to refer to the sport (hell , every fighter , I never heard a fighter call it cage fighting!) .If they’re watching UFC drunk in bars and don’t pay attention to anything the commentators ever say , plus they don’t care for fighters interviews or stuff like that , then I guess what you say is possible . I don’t really care , I just hope Yahoo keeps covering mma and then if more people do click they’ll be exposed to more mma.

by JoelMan on Jul 11, 2009 7:32 AM EDT up reply actions

U know now that I think about it , if Yahoo keeps covering other mma promotions who cares what the tab says . It would also make me doubt the UFC bought them off if Yahoo keeps covering world wide mma and not only the UFC . So let’s wait a couple of days , if the covering stays the way it was I guess u’re right and it was done to get more fans to click.

by JoelMan on Jul 8, 2009 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Says UFC in Virginia

Last I heard we weren’t in Canada yet, says UFC on my screen….I think it’s Yahoo appealing to the masses of people who equate UFC and MMA

by ketamine4kids on Jul 8, 2009 8:42 AM EDT reply actions

In either case

it appears to still say “MMA Home” in the “UFC” menu options. Appears to be a half-assed transition at this point, or they need a new QA.
