Nate Diaz vs. Melvin Guillard Confirmed for UFC Fight Night 19

According to MMAMania (image via the UFC newsletter), Nate Diaz and Melvin Guillard will serve as the main event for Ultimate Fight Night 19. With Nate just coming off a decision loss to Joe "Daddy" Stevenson and Melvin Guillard defeating Gleison Tibau by split decision, a win for Nate is crucial as he just lost his last two fights.
Along with this fight, the co-main event will be Gray Maynard vs. Roger Huerta. Gray Maynard was last seen destroying Jim Miller at UFC 96 via unanimous decision, where as Huerta recieved a decision loss courtesy of Kenny Florian.
These are the only two bouts that I have heard to be confirmed so far, along with Nate Quarry vs. Tim Creduer. That is garunteed to be another exciting fight on an already awesome card so far and especially for free, who could complain? I'm probably not the first to report this, but just wanted to make a post of it just in case. And also, Melvin better make sure his boxing is sharp and submission defense is amazing by the time fight night rolls around, or it could end quickly. But I never count him out. Can't wait BloodyElbow-er's!
Rumored card so far:
- Nate Diaz vs. Melvin Guillard
- Roger Huerta vs. Gray Maynard
- Tim Credeur vs. Nate Quarry
- Dan Miller vs. Aaron Simpson
- Ronnys Torres vs. Jeremy Stephens
- Mike Pyle vs. Chris Wilson
- Ryan Jensen vs. Steve Stienbreiss
- Sam Stout vs. Kyle Bradley

Major props Nick,
Cause the only thing I could find was that pic of Nate Diaz submitting Kurt. I like the new one a whole lot better.

Tim Credeur is going to get lit up by Nate Quarry. He’s fallen in love with shitty kickboxing.

Melvin is from the Kenner region outside of NO – get a little more west, and you’re in white trash parishes. Credeur is a Cajun boy from dead-center of Acadiana (if you haven’t been to Acadiana, it’s unlike any other part of the country – it’s fuckin’ awesome). And if someone’s from North Louisiana, they’re really from Arkansas. Anything too far north of I-10 doesn’t count.

What happened to Swick vs. Kampmann?

I was just about to say that. Haha. I can’t wait for that fight either, I think Swicks speed will be too much for Kampmann to be honest.

Lyoto, Rampage, Rashad, Rua, Thiago Silva, Anderson Silva, Forrest, Jardine – all booked. Who ya got for Franklin?

Hah, they won’t even let Huerta headline. Maynard is a good soldier.
Sorry, Nate – I’ve got Guillard by decision at first glance. I’ll have to think about it more.

I agree,
or by knockout. It’s basically 50/50 pending on if Guillard can connect with one of his bombs.

Diaz, first round sub. I’m still not convinced Guillard can keep it on his feet, has everyone forgot the Stevenson and Clementi fights against Guillard?
by pr0cs on Jul 7, 2009 3:50 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Shit, Stevenson didn’t keep it on the feet. Diaz is a little too in love with his guard, if you ask me.

Stand Up
I haven’t seen enough of Guillard to know if his ground game is good. I know his stand up is pretty good and Nate’s doesn’t look that strong. Nate’s ground game as everyone knows is great (except against Stevenson). Guillard takes it if it stays on the feet.

The Tibau fight was more recent
and showed that Guillard has gotten very skilled at scrambling back to his feet after a takedown, which was particularly impressive against Tibau’s powerful takedowns and top control. Tibau’s not exactly the most talented submission artist, but he is a legit black belt and Melvin fended him off just fine on the ground, taking little damage in the process.
I don’t think Nate is guaranteed a sub at all in this one.

Wow, if Diaz loses to Guillard, and Danzig loses to Miller, it’s time for a WWE-style loser goes home match on the big New Year’s card!

Do you think they would give Diaz another chance??
Three losses in a row is a lot, even for a TUF season winner…
I'm the kind of girl who loves to watch a GOOD fight!

They’d probably give him another chance because his fights are usually exciting. He’s also a good draw because he’s polarizing.

I am suprised everybody thinks Guillard will win does nobody rememer his grappling problems in the past ( Gabe rudedude almost tapped him) he’s played the three tap symphony often . well I do think it will be an exciting fight while it lasts!

From the UG
+ Ryan Jensen vs. Steve Stienbreiss
by Nick Thomas on Jul 7, 2009 9:23 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Really? Jensen?
He’s 0-3 in the UFC, losing by sub each time. Then again, he had to face Leites, Maia, and Gouveia in his first three UFC fights, but still…I could have sworn he was released. He certainly hasn’t fought since the Gouveia loss back in September of 2008.
At least they’re not giving him a Brazilian this time if the Steinebiss fight pans out ;)
by Scott Haber on Jul 7, 2009 11:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
After having done a little research
it appears than Jensen-Steinbeiss was supposed to happen in April at UFN 18, but Jensen dropped out due to medical issue. I guess the kid is miraculously still under contract.
by Scott Haber on Jul 7, 2009 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m not sure he’s really under contract so much as he sits by the phone and they call him when they need a sacrificial lamb to come in and tap out to somebody they hope to promote later.
by Kierkegaard on Jul 8, 2009 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think that Melvin is being offered up as a sacrifice to keep Nate Diaz in the LW picture. Melvin offers a legit threat with his power and underrated wrestling skills, but everyone knows Diaz has him outclassed on the ground in grappling and submissions. As usual when Melvin fights, I cheer for him because we are both from the Metro New Orleans area. His performances are just so inconsistant, and outside of a quick K.O., I don’t see him winning this one.

![Brock Larson reflects on his upset loss to Mike Pierce in an interview with MMA Junkie:
"I don't think the judges made the wrong call. They had to award him the win because the only thing that went on in the whole fight was takedowns, and he got them. I clearly lost the fight. Hats off to Pierce, but he has some issues to work on himself."
In the locker room after the fight, UFC matchmaker Joe Silva told Larson's manager, Monte Cox, "Don't worry about Brock. He's a fighter. We don't know what we're going to do with this other [expletive]. I don't know if I can watch another 15 minutes of that [expletive].".
"That was good to hear coming off a loss," Larson said. "In a weird way, that loss helps me, and it would have helped Pierce if he tried to be aggressive. Win, lose or draw, at least he's competing. People won't want to watch that stuff.
"I've always taken pride in going after and trying to finish my fights, and I get the upper hand always going after it and being aggressive. Pierce didn't have that attitude. He just wanted to eke out the win and get the [win].
"The W is important, but at the same time it's the entertainment business. People pay to watch, and they don't want to watch two guys hug belly buttons. Clay Guida, he makes more money on friggin' 'Fight of the Night' bonuses than he does on his fight wins."
"People look at film and say, 'This guy beat Brock? That's all he had to do,'" Larson said. "I have to get the Band-Aids out, cover that owie and not have to worry about that being a problem."](http://cdn1.sbnation.com/fan_shot_images/84043/md97y25v01_small.jpg)
![Nate Diaz talks Jake Shields vs. Jason Miller at Strikeforce Nov 7: [at the 5 min mark]
"Jake Shields is going to kill Mayhem. He should have never signed that contract. Shields is the man, there ain't no stopping him. I don't know anybody who could."
