UFC 100 Preview: Jim Miller vs. Mac Danzig Has Major Implications for Both Fighters' Career Paths

Jim Miller's style could easily be summed up in one word: relentless. That truly encompasses everything you need to know about him coming into his UFC 100 bout with Mac Danzig (18-6-1) on Saturday night. He's also built a reputation as a fighter known for coming in on short notice and actually winning. His battles in the East Coast promotion Ring of Combat and in the International Fight League are considered to be a testament to that very word, and he has brought that same style to the Octagon in his three stints in the UFC.

Miller (13-2) now faces The Ultimate Fighter Season 6 winner Mac Danzig in a match that has quietly flown under the radar. Coming off a disappointing loss to The Ultimate Fighter Season 5 contestant and powerhouse wrestler Gray Maynard at UFC 96 back in March, Miller will be looking to regain some momentum with a win.

The story is a bit different for Mac Danzig. Danzig is coming off two straight losses in the UFC. He dropped a unanimous decision to the cardio machine Clay Guida. He was submitted via triangle choke by a very tough Josh Neer in his most last fight. He'll surely be on the chopping block with a loss, so this fight matters for Mac Danzig.

Stylistically, Danzig holds some slight technical edges over Miller. He's very well-versed on the floor. He did submit a high-level grappler in Mark Bocek at UFC 83, and he was a submission master early in his career against weaker competition. He also has improved his striking game training at Freddie Roach's gym under Justin Fortune. Danzig was also a student of Iowa wrestling standout Rico Chiapparelli and UFC fighter Frank Trigg, so his wrestling has been adequate enough to be effective in the cage. He currently trains out of Xtreme Couture for an added training regiment focusing on his wrestling, and he has an advantage in being a very good friend and training partner to Gray Maynard, an outstanding wrestler in his own right.

Miller doesn't offer a better striking game, but his submission ability can surprise even the most experienced grapplers. He can pull off submissions in some of the tightest corners of the cage. He's almost impossible to finish, and his durability in the cage is unmatched. He won't come at Danzig with a Guida pace, but he does come forward at a pace that opponents find hard to sustain.

The most interesting question in this match comes in the striking game. Danzig has actually shown some solid improvement over the years, and he managed to clip Guida with some good shots in their September bout. Miller has shown some good stand-up ability in past fights, but does he have the technical acumen to compete with Danzig standing? Furthermore, can Miller actually out-wrestle Danzig and wear him down to a point in which he could potentially win the fight?

What sort of implications does the outcome of this fight have for both fighters? A Danzig loss would most assuredly spell disaster for his career within the UFC. Three straight losses would put him on the chopping block, but I'd be more inclined to believe that Zuffa would deal with Danzig for a contract within the featherweight division in the WEC. He can easily cut down to 145 lbs., and he's always stated that lightweight isn't his natural weight class. He can probably beat most of the lower-echelon featherweights in the WEC, and I wouldn't be surprised if his power at 145 would put him in the win column more times than not.

Miller, on the other hand, has a lot to gain with a win. It will give him a 3-1 record inside the Octagon with a lone loss coming against a guy who could potentially be a title contender within the next year. Miller will undoubtedly be offered some very interesting opponents, and with some wins, he could see himself in the upper part of the division vying for contention in a year as well. Of course, there are a lot of "what ifs" in that formula, and Miller would have to continue winning.

I'd love to pick Miller here as he's one of my favorite fighters in the lightweight division, but it's a tough call. A lot of Miller's opponents in that past have held edges in specific areas of his skill set, and he's managed to come out on top with pure determination and grit. Danzig is fairly technical on the ground, but his improving stand-up has me scratching my head as to whether he can truly catch Miller and finish. I'm more inclined to believe we'll see this go to decision, and I'd rather see Miller win and move on into the division while Danzig moves down to a weight class that is more favorable for his frame.

I really feel like they've thrown Danzig into the grease with this one

Miller’s only got one loss and Mac’s coming off 2 straight.

Yeah, this is a bad fight for Danzig I think, though it should be more competitive than the Maynard fight.

Honestly, on paper, I think Danzig looks like he has the edge, but Miller’s toughness is just remarkable. I can see him easily pushing the pace and defeating Danzig. Danzig needs to head down to 145.

I think that Danzig’s boxing would probably be his best weapon. When he was on his rhythm in the Neer fight, he was kicking ass. For example:

That said, he has some severe problems in this fight. Firstly, I don’t think his defensive wrestling is good enough to really either 1) keep from going down or 2) really damage Miller standing (pick your poison sort of deal). Secondly, Danzig does have underrated grappling, evidenced beautifully in the Bocek fight; however, he got tapped out by Josh Neer. Neer is a wily and crafty fighter (whose ground game really reminds me of a Spencer Fisher), but Miller is very, very good on the ground. Better than Bocek too, in terms of MMA (which is to say, getting it done in the cage). Last, but most certainly not least, I sincerely suspect that he is just one of those fighters whose head gets in the way sometimes. When he was on, he was tooling Neer, but Neer’s toughness and taunting seemed to wear on Danzig, to the point that he fell into a textbook triangle. Not to push the comparison too far but, I see Danzig/Neer much like Kang/Mousasi or Kang/Belcher, and equally as instructive.

The thing I love about Miller’s ground game is that he can put most guys into danger in the most ridiculous tight spaces. Case in point is one of the battles with Liguori in ROC in which he basically armbarred him against the ropes near the turnbuckle. I agree though, Miller is very dangerous on the floor, but I wonder if he has the acumen to submit Danzig.

I may be the only one seeing this connection, but I really think that if Miller’s toughness and ground skills can sufficiently frustrate Danzig, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see a sub (via my Kang-Danzig theorem).

I think if he can tire Danzig a bit, it’s a possibility.

Great fight!

Neer def. Danzig. Danzig had his moments, but it’s not like he fell into a lucky triangle. Neer was smoking him thru the fight. If it would have gone longer, Danzig would have been beat down. Neer is just too tough, too gritty. Looking forward to Neer v. Batman at 101.

I think Danzig loses again unless he can keep the fight standing.

True. The frustration began long before the fight went to the ground.

Danzig’s power has to be questioned. Neer walked through his shots like something you see in a movie. I can’t see him beating a guy as tough as Miller either.

Mac Danzig

is getting super screwed. I dont particularly care for the guy but he didn’t deserve to be thrown this murderer’s row.

Time for Danzig to shit or get off the pot. If he’s a real top quality fighter like TUF winners are supposed to be, he’s going to have to start winning. If he can’t, then moving down to the WEC is the best place for him. FIghting guys beyond his size and ability is doing him no favors.

This is actually one of the better fights on the card.

We’ll see what the vegan is made of here. (No, I’m not a Danzig hater)

I agree. I’m a bit surprised it hasn’t gotten some more coverage. Stylistically, it’s a damn good fight.

You can’t be too surprised about it. The other fights are getting pimped so much under the banner of the “biggest event in UFC history”…grudges, rematches, titles, Korea, etc.

Oh well…I’m still looking forward to this competitive fight!

Not overly surprised, but it is a great lightweight matchup with some major implications. Danzig could be on the way out as a TUF winner.

I’m rooting for Miller, Danzig is overated and has shown little to no improvements since winning the show.
