UFC 100 Preview: C.B. Dollaway Progressing Into Potential Star?

In preliminary action at Saturday night's UFC 100 event, Ultimate Fighter season 7 runner-up C.B. Dollaway (8-1) will take on Ultimate Fighter season 8 contestant Tom Lawlor (5-1) in a bout that will give Dollaway another chance to showcase his improvement since his stint on TUF. While this isn't the most intriguing match by any means, it will give us a glimpse into what Dollaway is adding to his skill set.

Dollaway is currently 8-1 in his career with a lone loss coming from injury-riddled Amir Sadollah at the Ultimate Fighter season 7 Finale back in June of 2008. Interestingly enough, Sadollah also fought Dollaway in the house, and he defeated him via armbar in the third round of their semifinal matchup. After Jesse Taylor was kicked off the show, Dollaway fought Tim Credeur for the spot against Sadollah in the finale. Dollaway won that fight, but he subsequently dropped the finale fight in the same manner Sadollah had defeated him previously.

After the loss, Dollaway has been on somewhat of an impressive run in his last two fights. He submitted Jesse Taylor at UFN 14 via a Peruvian Necktie submission in quick fashion, and he surprisingly recovered from being caught on the chin by a very game Mike Massenzio at UFC 92 to transitioning to back control and punching Massenzio into a stoppage. Both fights ended in the first round.

There is also a significant chance that Dollaway will only become better as he moves up in competition. Training out of Arizona Combat Sports in Tempe, Arizona, elite-level training partners are plentiful for Dollaway to test his mettle. Names like former WEC champion Carlos Condit, TUF Season 8 winner Ryan Bader, current UFC fighter Aaron Simpson, Steve Steinbess, BJJ phenom and up-and-coming welterweight Jacob McClintock, and when healthy, WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner are all training partners for Dollaway.

Tom Lawlor won't exactly be a victim to Dollaway's skills in the cage. Lawlor, best known for knocking out "Diamond" Dave Kaplan after Kaplan insisted he couldn't be knocked out, has been training out of one of the best MMA camps in the world in Coconut Creek, Florida-based American Top Team. He has a solid background in wrestling, but ATT seems to be a camp that can mold fighters into devastating Muay Thai practitioners coupled with a solid grappling base. Whether or not Lawlor has become an "assimilated" member of the ATT family has yet to be determined, but he has an ample amount of unbelievable training partners in his own camp that will help him achieve success.

Gesias "JZ" Calvancante, Denis Kang, Marcelo Garcia, Jeff Monson, and Thiago Alves all call ATT their home, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. Lawlor should be able to find some of the best training in the world at ATT, but can he manage to take all the wisdom given to him from fellow competitors and turn it into an upset victory over Dollaway?

My gut tells me that this is C.B. Dollaway's fight to lose. Lawlor didn't show an overly different style in his battle with Kyle Kingsbury, and Dollaway has the skills to nullify Lawlor's wrestling game or easily transition into submissions if Lawlor is aggressive in trying to take Dollaway down. The only real advantage I can see is that Lawlor is dropping down in weight to middleweight for this fight, and he could have a sizable weight advantage come fight time.

Dollaway is being brought along nicely by the UFC and matchmaker Joe Silva. The Mike Massenzio matchup was a solid test due to their past history in collegiate wrestling with Dollaway barely defeating Massenzio on the mat, and Dollaway passed the test in the MMA cage with flying colors against a surging Massenzio.

This is a more toned down battle than the Massenzio matchup, but it is obvious that the UFC has some plans for Dollaway as he hasn't been thrown into any big matchups yet. He should progress nicely into a mid-echelon middleweight at this rate, but he'll need a huge push to become one of the elite fighters in the division in the years to come.

I’d be interested to see how rolling with Jacob McClintock goes for Dollaway.

i just see Dollaway as very middle-of-the-pack

really good wrestling, but not great anywhere else. it’s going to help him past lower-tier guys, but i think he’s going to get torn up by top guys — and i think that’s going to be true all of his career.

I agree. I think he can break into the mid-echelon, but breaking into the top of the division doesn’t seem like a possibility at this point.

He knows how to defend it.

He just taps his opponent twice, and when the guy lets the move go, he pretends he never tapped.

If you see Mark Coleman in person, drop $5 on the floor and watch the fun as he tries in vain to bend down and pick it up.

Being Matt Damon’s stunt double would be an awesome job. Less dangerous than MMA, and possibly get you more chicks too.

I appreciate the support from everyone who gives it to me, and anyone who doesn’t, I’ll use it as fuel to the fire in an effort to prove you wrong=)

Also, just because my hands look better than they ever have doesn’t mean they look good…..just better than before. it is pretty easy to improve on crappy standup.

What I do have going for me is I am pretty strong despite only being able to bench press around 300 lbs.

I also have a big head and a rattail hair do, which will serve to distract CB, and if he does sneak in some punches I have a lot of cranium to protect my brain.

Is this how Seth got ready for his Kimbo Slice fight?

I think we need to throw Mayhem, Aoki and Imanari in for this photoshoot!!!

Bless you, Seth Petruzelli.

Dollaway needs to keep talking about himself in the third person.

There’s not really anything in this article that points to how/why dollaway is progressing into a potential star.

by -Sam on Jul 7, 2009 11:04 AM EDT reply actions

Sure there is…

He is with one of the more up-and-coming fight camps in the business. He’s managed to become a guy who has effectively ended his last few fights rather quickly in comparison to some of his others. The sure sign that the UFC is seeing some potential there is that they are lining him up with fights that he can win pretty convincingly, and that will help him improve significantly as he moves forward. Some guys simply get thrown to the wolves too quickly, and obviously the UFC isn’t doing that with Dollaway.

But it is more of a question… Is he progressing into a potential star? I’d say he’s probably more likely to sit in the middle of the pack for awhile. He’ll need some sort of breakthrough to be a real star.

He needs to avenge his loss(es) to Amir first.

by Bandaka on Jul 7, 2009 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions

If he becomes one it’ll be because of a win streak or big performances, because I don’t see a personality that can stir people up there.

I don’t know… people love to hate him. If he got into a big matchup with press coverage and he acted like a complete douchebag that many people suggest he already does, I can see the entire “love to hate him” draw coming into play.

He always came off really bland to me. Then again, that could easily just be me.

Is he progressing into a star?? I dont think so. Maybe he will but he hasnt show all that much. Massenzio had a torn MCL in their fight and probably shouldnt have been fighting however still managed to get the better of the standup and then nearly finish CB with the guillotine. Solid work from CB to escape, but you dont want a guy like massenzio to be beating you on the feet and on the ground early. Not a good sign for future bouts when you fall victim to 2 armbars and then allow a guillotine to be sunk. And the win over Jesse Taylor doesnt mean much at all to me as I dont rate jessie very highly. Maybe he will improve rapidly and beat a big name fighter, but I havent seen anything overly impressive just yet……..although that necktie was pretty sweet!

I hate CB Tapaway. I can’t beleive how much Dana and Co liked him on the show when clearly he had a douche personality. His buddy Bader seems nothing like him.

This almost reminds me of the Arroyo/Cramer fight where Arroyo was supposed to win but word out of Cramer’s camp said otherwise.

Anyway, I still think CB takes this one. He’s been good for a while now.

by The Real T-Bone on Jul 7, 2009 2:12 PM EDT reply actions

arroyo is just not very good though

by yngjzy on Jul 7, 2009 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s really good at tapping so the ref doesn’t see it.

Keep firing Assholes!

Out out, you demons of stupidity!

by Ubernoober on Jul 7, 2009 2:49 PM EDT reply actions

he’s done that at most 1 time

by yngjzy on Jul 7, 2009 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I'll say at least twice.

And considering I’ve seen three of his fights, that’s a trend.

If you see Mark Coleman in person, drop $5 on the floor and watch the fun as he tries in vain to bend down and pick it up.

by Ozzz on Jul 7, 2009 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

i assume you are counting the amir fight

why don’t you go watch that tap again and tell me he is trying to hide that

by yngjzy on Jul 8, 2009 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions

YES!

He claimed afterwards he didn’t tap. Clearly he did, but he didn’t think Herb Dean would spot it so quickly.

Dude’s a cheat. I don’t care if he only does it once in his life, he’s a cheat.

Yeah I don’t really care much for CB “I smell shit” Dollaway.

by goodbones on Jul 8, 2009 1:29 AM EDT up reply actions

there is no way you can claim he was trying to hide that. i don’t think anyone fake taps directly in front of that ref like that

by yngjzy on Jul 8, 2009 2:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Sometimes, when you're in a guillotine for example...

..you don’t know where the ref is.

by Ozzz on Jul 11, 2009 3:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Yea I love how they talk about his impressive win over Massenzio, even though he blatantly tapped to the guillotine…lucky for him the ref didn’t see it, or we would be talking about him trying to get back in the win column

by Fedorable on Jul 7, 2009 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Ugh, I just want CB to go away already.
