Diaz/Riggs 2 for Welterweight Title confirmed (with poll)
MMA WEEKLY reports:
"A rematch between rivals Nick Diaz and Joe Riggs is set for the main card of Strikeforce "Carano vs. Cyborg" on Aug. 15. The bout will be for the newly created welterweight title.
Sources close to both fighters confirmed the news to MMAWeekly.com on Monday. An announcement from the promotion is expected shortly.
Bad blood remains between the fighters. Following Riggs' decision victory over Diaz at UFC 57, the two brawled in a Las Vegas hospital until broken up by security. Both hit career skids later in 2006 and were released from the UFC. "
Sweet. Two dudes that hate each other, brawled inside a hospital and both of these guys are big time shit talkers. Another interesting thing about this are the recent things Riggs has been saying about Diaz's team mate Jake Shields, that should add more fuel to their rivalry. SOLID card for Strikeforce.
Anyone wanna add a picture for me? :)
Here is how the rumored card is looking so far:
- Gina Carano (7-0) vs. Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (7-1)
- Josh Thomson (16-2) vs. Gilbert Melendez (15-2)
- Alistair Overeem (29-11) vs. Fabricio Werdum (11-4-1)
- Nick Diaz (20-7) vs. Joe Riggs (30-10)
- Jake Shields (23-4-1) vs. Matt Lindland (21-6)
- Erin Toughill (10-2-1) vs. Marloes Coenen (16-3)
- Roger Gracie (2-0) vs. TBA
- Billy Evangelista (9-1) vs. TBA
- Poppies Martinez (16-5) vs. TBA

Really?
Diaz has been very good lately, and Riggs not so much. Who put this together? :\

I was thinking too...
that this might be someone of a step down for Diaz. It’s still a good fight considering they will sell the hell out of this fight and don’t like each other. I’m sure Diaz is happy about this fight though.

Is Riggs really that big a step down from Scott Smith, Frank Shamrock, Thomas Denny, Muhsin Corbbrey, and Katsuya Inoue?

But it is a step down, rather than a step up.

I believe he is
Diaz has been fighting from bottom up, just like the order of fighters you listed. If you’re gonna put up your best welterweight/middleweight to fight it should be someone a step above the last person you beat. Frank and Scott are for sure above Joe Riggs. Joe Riggs just barely beat Phil Baroni and he’s fighting for the welterweight title?
Richard Wade a smart ass?! SURPRISING.

I can’t wait for Diaz to maul him then talk shit about his camp. He might make the #1 of “Rineys’ Dickheads of MMA”

Riggs definately has a chance he already has a win over diaz, and you know Diaz is not gonna take this fight to the ground were he might be able to get a sub . It should be a fun stand up war!

Also
I think that’s what got Werdum to sign. It’s also a rematch so they can hype the fight.

I could give two shits - they could've hyped Rogers/Overeem
All I know is a guy coming off of a loss is getting a title shot. Can you imagine the uproar that would’ve ensued had Brock lost to Herring and THEN got a title shot? Supremacy would lose his fucking mind.

Or even worse, a fighter who lost in a lower weight class who then retired, who got a title shot at a higher weight class. Preposterous! =D

Now you’re comparing Fabricio Werdum to Randy Couture. Randy had won five titles when he came back to fight Tim – and defended the HW title multiple times. There is no comparison, Rogers deserves this shot more than Werdum and you’re making a ridiculous comparison to defend a ridiculous matchmaking process that’s clearly designed to protect Alistair.

Putting Werdum against Overeem is not protecting him…LOL.
Werdum can beat Overeem again, just like last time.

Holy Cow At This Card...
Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told Sherdog.com on Monday that Johnson had been scheduled to fight on the promotion’s Aug. 15 fight card featuring Gina Carano and Cris Cyborg. Negotiations were underway to try and secure British heavyweight James Thompson as an opponent.
by MMASuPreMaCy on Jul 6, 2009 9:27 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think this is what the card was supposed to look like...
- Gina Carano (7-0) vs. Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos (7-1)
- Josh Thomson (16-2) vs. Gilbert Melendez (15-2)
- Alistair Overeem (29-11) vs. Fabricio Werdum (11-4-1)
- Nick Diaz (20-7) vs. Joe Riggs (30-10)
- Jake Shields (23-4-1) vs. Matt Lindland (21-6)
- Erin Toughill (10-2-1) vs. Marloes Coenen (16-3)
- Lavarr “Big” Johnson (12-3) vs. James Thompson (14-10)
- Roger Gracie (2-0) vs. TBA (Tim Sylvia possible)
- Billy Evangelista (9-1) vs. TBA (Mike Aina possible)
- Poppies Martinez (16-5) vs. TBA

Read what I wrote, that was supposed to be the card, according to Coker in the quote above. James Thompson vs Lavar Johnson was in the works.

The second bout didn’t count as Riggs tested positive for painkillers.

Then Diaz over Gomi doesn’t count either. I know it doesn’t officially, but many look at it as a win for Diaz.

Riggs is going to be a great bet on this fight because I think fans are REALLY overrating Nick after the Scott Smith fight. Not that Nick can’t win, but the motherf*cking Diaz brothers are still susceptible to wrestlers.
by MMAEruption on Jul 6, 2009 10:28 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
And Joe Riggs is still susceptible to people who own treadmills. Nick Diaz has really hit his stride lately, I give him a 65-70% chance of winning.
