Next MMA Fighter To Die?

In the past couple of weeks, the ancient prophecy is slowly becoming true. Celebrities have been dying left and right. Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson, Billy Mays, and now even Steve McNair have all died very recently. Sadly, I think that it's only a matter of time before an Mixed Martial Artist will suffer the same destiny that these other big names in entertainment and sports have.
Naturally, I think us MMA fans should do what we all have done best over the years - speculate and bet on the next fighter to die, and how they will suffer their untimely demise. Will it be Tito Ortiz after he received an unnoticed infection of Hepatitis B from his girlfriend, Jenna Jameson? Or will Yoshihiro Akiyama suffocate in an orgy, being crushed under the weight of 30 Japanese models? Or perhaps will Ken Shamrock die of old age? We can only find out in time, and hopefully mmalogic comes in here and shows me how to pull a profit 85% of the time.
(PS If you didn't notice, this is a joke post and is meant only for fun. Hopefully I didn't offend anyone
EDIT: Oh dear, it appears that I have offended many. I'm sorry that I did offend you if I did, and apparantly we have a difference in humor. Again, sorry)

2) Put a poll up with Ken, Tito, Sexyama, etc. My vote goes to Tim Sylvia via shame.

Yes it is.
We can’t say anything intelligent about death (everything regarding its effects is pure speculation), so the only rational response is to treat it irrationally, i.e. laugh at it. My ideal funeral would be a giant funeral pyre as a BBQ. How better to be remembered than toasting your descendants’ marshmallows and hot dogs! Even as a corpse, you would be useful!

Like this:
Just as the guy a few comments above said, I think this post was in poor taste and it should be a reason to make a de-rec button.
Joking about people who recently died and making a poll on who you think should die next is just plain wrong.. I know it’s a joke, but it’s a pretty bad one at that..
This guy bitches about the crap he recieves in mmamania, but you cant blame people for reacting like that even in BE because of posts like this..

I’m surprised this post survived the weekend and hasn’t been deleted. If this doesn’t qualify as fighter bashing, I don’t know what does. It also has unfortunately resonance with the all-too-recent tragic deaths of Justin Eilers and Evan Tanner.
For anyone considering creating a fanpost, I’d suggest they heed the mission statement recently articulated by Luke in his interview:
The more mainstream sports fan and sporting world expect MMA to be followed by the dregs of society. Having writing and analysis beyond the third grade level can actually do wonders for MMA’s acceptance levels, to say nothing of how concerned we are with producing high quality work as a matter of professional responsibility.

It really isn’t that surprising. They allow jokes about Tito & Jenna all the time. They allow Sexyama jokes all the time. They allow Ken-is-Washed-Up jokes all the time. Why not allow all three in a post at once? So it’s about death – so what? We’re all going to die – why not laugh at it? If you can’t laugh at one of the most defining aspects of your life, why laugh at anything?
I don’t want anyone in MMA to tragically die – Tanner was depressing, Eilers was bizarre. Helio didn’t phase me because he lived a healthy, natural life. I had a beer for him.

I have had people very close to me die.
One of my best friends from high school died of cancer at 21. My favorite relative also died recently, at 89. My best friend’s grandfather died over the Christmas holidays, and we were close. That doesn’t stop me from joking and laughing about it. Make no mistake, I’m always solemn the week of the death/funeral out of respect and grieving (I personally mourn via complete silence). But the taboo against treating death as humorously as anything else is bullcrap.
Is this a great post? No. Did I laugh? Yes, and for me, laughter is its own end, not necessarily a means to anything else.

Weo, Fenix… I’m with you guys and this whole post is complete garbage and not funny at all. “Ehh.. we’re all gonna die… why not make a joke about it” Sorry but that is bull shit. The “check marked” people were human beings and don’t deserve to be the butt of a joke. On top of the fact that this article is highly NOT CREATIVE at all, its not funny at all either. How bout you show this garbage to Steve McNair’s sons and see if they find it funny? Maybe Billy Mays’s wife will have an opinion on what MMA fighter will die next?
Well Lavar Johnson is now fighting for his life currently so there maybe the answer to your tasteless question….
I think the BE Editors and Admins should be ashamed of themselves. You want credentials from the UFC and to be seen as a serious site…. well allowing garbage like this to remain on the site really sends you in the wrong direction. I know y’all have seen this because comments have been deleted. Go ahead and flame me for speaking my mind or deleting my comments or even banning me from this site… go ahead and do it because I won’t be posting here anymore and I’ll get my MMA info elsewhere.
I expect this kind of garbage on Sherdog or the UG, but I thought more highly of you guys…

You’ve never made fun of another person? Or have you said things like Everytime I hear Sylvia’s name, read a story about him, or see a picture of what he has become…. all I hear is toilets flushing now. Notice, too, how the editors have largely ignored the thread, not posting in it and removing only the idiot comments. They know better than to get involved in the muck. Let the community say what it wants – the best will rise to the top. Without rec’s, this post will quickly be buried and closed to comments.

He said that people shouldn’t use others as the butt of jokes; I pointed out the hypocrisy of that statement. Also, no one ever said that Tito or Ken should die tragically – I want it to happen to them after a long, fulfilling life & as calmly as possible, the way I want most everyone in the world to die (life is traumatic enough, let us leave it in peace). The distinction you’re pointing out is outside the scope of the discourse.
Besides, people do make jokes about the recently deceased. Paramedics frequently develop gallows humor as a defensive mechanism. US citizens constantly joked about capturing or executing Saddam, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, et al. The Darwin Awards are extremely successful books. I fail to see how it’s inherently a moral failing.

My point is that people are saying, “Don’t make fun of the dead”, yet there exists acceptable targets for it. If the maxim is true, then we shouldn’t make fun of Hitler, Saddam, Mussolini, most Roman emperors, etc, but who will make the argument that the man/idea “Adolf Hitler” is too sacred to mock? The existence of one counterexample renders that statement (Don’t make fun of the dead) obsolete.

I agree with the sentiment of the first paragraph, and as soon as I heard the news of Lavar Johnson, I immediately thought of this thread and was gonna bring it up, so kudos to you for saving me the trouble.
That said, we need to be a little more understanding of the BE Editors and Admins. They are very busy people. It’s Fourth of July weekend. For all we know, they may have never seen this post. Or, maybe they believe so highly in free speech they want to see people hash it out in the comments. I don’t know. I know I said I wouldn't post anymore...
but after reading some of the comments that were made after mine, I am honestly bored and I ended up coming back here as a force of habit.
Takeover, I wouldn’t have gone off on the BE staff if other comments made were not deleted. At least one, if not all, have seen this article so something along these lines should be taken off. Is there anything vulgar in it? No. The fact of the matter is that someone is making a heartless and tasteless joke out of the early demise of human beings that left long before their time. Stuff like this doesn’t say much about the intelligence of the material that is put on this site. This takes away from Kid Nate’s Judo Chop, Weo’s Twitter Tweet’s, the anti Zuffa goodness that MMASupremecy puts on display, and all be the contributions made can sometimes be rather condencending…mmalogics posts. Smart, entertaining, and useful info is overshadowed by this kind of stupid garbage. Dana White, Scott Coker, and Tom Atencio, among others… they do look at this site and it has to be embarassing that this crap is on here. You’d expect to see something this bad on the UG or Sherdog. Luke, Brett, Nate, Eugene, Mr. Rome, Mr. Nelson, and Richard do great work… it gets overshadowed by stupid and inconsiderate crap like this. Why this sort of thing may not be their opinion, it is on their site and they should care what material is being put on their site… this sort of thing crosses a line of human descency.
Machavillean, you’re right… I have made blatant and hurtful remarks about Tim Sylvia. I think the man has reached “sideshow” status in MMA. I laughed my ass off when Ray Mercer knocked him out. I however never wished death upon him. Just because the guy has lost quite a few steps, I don’t want him to die in any manner… I don’t wish that upon anyone. You made a valid point with the Saddam Hussein remarks, I’m sure a lot of people did wish death upon him and he got it so they were happy. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t relieved that sick man was hung… but my reasoning behind that is that he slaughtered millions of people that didn’t deserve it. I feel “making predictions” of someones inevident death is in extreme poor taste and just flat out sick… whether it is in a joking fashion or not.
For the people that do find this stuff entertaining and funny, that is your perogative…. I however don’t, thats the point I am making. I think at this point, our thoughts and, if you are a religous person, prayers should be with the families that lost these loved ones and definitely should be with Lavar Johnson. The man is an incredible talent and I hope he is able to pull through.
I’m getting off my soapbox now, most of y’all are really good people w/ good hearts and good heads on your shoulders. I’m sure there is going to be amazing work that will come out on this site and eventually the higher ups w/ the MMA orgs will see it and recognize it in a positive manner. Just probably not this article.

I’ll agree that I find deadpools rather tasteless, wherein people bet on celebrities to die within the year. Joking about death is one thing, but profiting is another, especially when the celebs are as young as Amy Winehouse or Lindsey Lohan who’ve just wasted their lives. I joke pro bono.
If you don’t like this sort of humor, no biggie. It’s your life to laugh at what you like. Just please let us enjoy our off-kilter humor without the soapbox. Wow at a lot of the responses to this, it is just a joke. It is not even a joke focused as much on death as on aspects of people’s lives that are funny. As for me, my reaction to death is to remember the person while they were alive, and for a lot of people, there are many humorous things to laugh at.

What’s great about what the mods are doing is assuming the community is smart enough to handle it’s own problems, and this topic has been dealt with largely responsibly, hiding only the outright flaming. The easiest way to contend with unpopular speech is to ignore it – complaining about it will only make it angry.
