UFC 100 Preview: Striking Coach Ken Hahn Talks Frank Mir vs. Brock Lesnar

Frank Mir's striking coach talked to MMAWeekly:
"I think the best thing for Brock would be get as crazy as possible and come out of the box like that. That’s how he’s going to beat Frank. If he tries to get technical and try to play the striking game, he’ll get crushed. If he tries to do the jiu-jitsu game, he’ll get crushed. He hasn’t been training long enough. How can somebody get better in six months?
We’re not gonna throw kicks like we did in the first fight. In the first fight, he was still a little anxious with me and wanted to show he had learned. It’s a beginner’s mistake; why are you gonna throw a kick in the open field? This time, I think he’s going to feel him out, box him, frustrate him, because I think Brock’s going to throw hands and try to knock him out and I don’t see how that’s going to happen. Brock has no kicks, so we’re not worried about his kicks or knees. It will probably be a boxing match, then Brock will get hit with something, and get submitted or knocked out. Then in the third or fourth round, here come the low kicks, so we can further frustrate him. The biggest thing is if Frank stays relaxed and moves laterally, you’ll see a seminar."
Kehn Hahn is among several others who think that Frank Mir can use Brock's relative lack of experience to overcome his size and strength advantage.

How can somebody get better in six months?
Mostly through hard work and a good training camp.

I think he meant in the case of Lesnar who is still inexperienced and is essentially learning alot on the job. The learning curve is a tad differant.

pretty sure it’s not 6 months though , ain’t got the patience to check when they fought but Lesnar took Herring and Randy after Mir . Probably a whole year passed …

Obviously you can get better from training for half a year. What he meant to say was: How can anyone in 6 months get from where Brock was to being good enough to beat Frank?
This whole Frank hype fiasco is getting out of hand. It sure has turned me against his case.

You still don’t become as good as Frank Mir in striking or grappling in 6 months, a year, or two years. I’m sure Brock has learned a lot but as I’ve said before, this is a squash match in disguise. Brock Lesnar has this facade of greatness along with this pro wrestling aura of dominance that captures the attention of fence jumpers (not a reference to Mexican people) everywhere. When he gets beaten by Mir, I think a lot of people are going to get off this hype train of his. Of course he has the ability to knock Mir out in Round 1 but it’s unlikely.

While I do feel that Lesnar has a lot of potential and has been improving each fight, so many MMA fans see more in him than he has actually shown. Obviously, Lesnar can and is a favorite to win their match. As far as being as good as Mir in striking, one has to remember that Mir has been doing martial arts since he was a kid.

54% in favor of Lesnar? What?
I didn’t fall for Lesnar’s game last time and won’t be falling for it either this time around. Mur’s superior ground game as well as his improved stand up — will not lose — to Brock Lesnar. Lesnar is undoubtedly talented, just not as talented as Frank Mur. I believe that Mur needs to set the tempo and then the fight will be a clinic. I don’t see in any manner of gameplan how Mur will win.

Mir’s footwork is less than stellar. While he looked good against Nog, I think Frank is overestimating his own striking.

how many times has Frank actually been taken down via a shot anyways?
Not that I’m saying his TDD is great, but most time I remember him bein on the ground is from his own takedown, or some striking exchange…

Trainers are as objective as religous people...
No one is gonna get smarter after reading what a fighter’s trainer has to say – it’s always he’s gonna win , he’s gonna KO or submit him , blah blah .
I obviously don’t blame the trainers , they can’t say what they really think – e.g my guy is probably gonna be in serious trouble in this fight …
I’m gonna be muchos surprised if Mir will cause significant damage standing up , because Lesnar will easily take him down if he feels he’s in trouble.

Yeah, but compare Frank and his posse to Greg Jackson and the GSP people… They are being confident without coming off as arrogant. You can pay due respect while expressing certainty in winning. Frank makes it sound like he’s fighting an animal or something. Not cool!

I want Ken Hahn to be right.
I really want to see Frank Mir out box Lesnar and frustrate him. I just think Brock Lesnar is way too big, strong and most of all, athletic. I am really surprised to see the voting on this as close as it is.

From what I recall, Lesnar looked very nervous once Randy drew blood on him. If Mir happens to get a few strikes to land and pisses Lesnar off, he’ll bum rush Frank and get an extremity handed back to him. I’d be nervous as hell if I was Frank, but if he plays smart and his striking has actually improved, he can’t lose. As good as Frank seems now, this reminds me of the old Royce Gracie days, David vs Goliath.

Just rewatched the fight (thanks mma-core), and about the only reaction to the cut was that Lesnar wiped the blood a few times and proceeded to get a bit more aggressive in the standup. One interesting thing I noted while watching this again was that Lesnar used his knees a lot, especially from the clinch. He landed knees to the thigh, the ribs and the face at least ten times in that round and a half. If Hahn and Mir are ignoring Lesnar throwing knees, then they may be in for a shock.

That punch pretty much pissed Brock off
And it showed me that he can at least take a decent shot to the jaw and still come forward. I see Mir throwing a right cross, it connecting solidly, and Mir being completely blindsided by the overhand murderball Lesnar throws in response.

If I had to guess, I’d say Lesnar mauls Mir in a standing clinch in round 2 and connects with some Tank Abbot style right to the temple. That elbow he staggered Couture with was almost incidental and Couture – who can take a shot – was rubber legged for a good 30 seconds. If he wasn’t Capt. America, he doesn’t have the wherewithal to clinch Lesnar up against the cage so he can recover. Mir looks a lot improved in the standup (albeit against an old, staph infected Noguiera), but I’ve still yet to see him really take a shot and recover with that kind of presence (hi, Brandon Vera).

Didn’t Frank say almost exactly the same stuff in a recent interview? About Brock coming out wild. They made it sound really conversational and off-the-cuff but nobody normally comes out in the weeks before a fight and talks gameplan like this.
Mind games, perhaps.
