Dan Lauzon and Rafaello Oliveira Sign With UFC, Square Off at UFC 103
Two more Affliction cast-offs have found a new home with the UFC, as lightweights Dan "the Upgrade" Lauzon and Rafaello "Tractor" Oliveira have signed with the organization, and will face each other in the Octagon at UFC 103 in Dallas in September. Jason Benfari at FiveKnuckles.com has the report:
A source close to the event has informed FiveKnuckles.com that Dan Lauzon will square off against long time B.J. Penn training partner Rafaello Oliveira at UFC 103 in Dallas, TX. The fight is expected to be announced by Dana White as part of a UFC press conference tomorrow.
Originally scheduled to face Chris Horodecki on the Afffliction card, Dan Lauzon (12-2, 0-1 UFC) will join his older brother Joe in the UFC's crowded lightweight division, marking the first time in UFC history that two brothers will compete in the same weight class. This will not be Dan's UFC debut either, as he faced Spencer Fisher way back at UFC 64 when he was just 18 years old. Although he lost to Fisher via first round TKO, he made history as the youngest fighter ever to compete in the Octagon. Since that loss, Lauzon has gone 8-1, and with first or second stoppages in all his victories.
Rafaello Oliveira (8-1) is a BJJ standout and a long-time training partner of UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn. Oliveira was slated to take on Takanori Gomi at Affliction and was seen in one of BJ Penn's recent video blogs as being clearly distraught over the cancellation of that fight. "Tractor" will finish helping Penn prepare for his title defense against Kenny Florian next week, before resuming his own training for the September 19th clash with Lauzon.
Current UFC 103 card:
Main Event - Rich Franklin vs. Dan Henderson* - this could possibly change, more details from Dana tomorrow
Martin Kampmann vs. Mike Swick
Mirko Cro Cop vs. Junior Dos Santos
Frank Trigg vs. Josh Koscheck
Tyson Griffin vs. Hermes Franca
Efrain Escudero vs. Cole Miller
Drew McFedries vs. Tomasz Drwal
Rafael dos Anjos vs. Rob Emerson
Dan Lauzon vs. Rafaello Oliveira
Sean Sherk vs. Gleison Tibau
Eliot Marshall vs. Jason Brilz

Isn’t Joe Lauzon buddies with BJ? and they’re letting his brother fight BJ’s (and at some point probably joe’s) training partner?
Joe trained with BJ after TUF 5
then he moved back to bawston and opened his own gym. i dont think dan ever trained in hawaii.
i thought of this too, but ultimately i guess you gotta do what you gotta do eh? idk
he was injured. injured bad.
Not all fighters
are whiny little girls who can’t fight anyone they’ve ever trained with in the past.
XTC fighters fight each other all the time (Coleman/ Bonnar, Hendricks/ Amir, etc etc), because they understand that if they’re fighting in the same division, it can murky up the title picture.
That’s why UFC’s WW division is such a clusterfuck (Swick, Kos, and Fitch- all top 5 in the UFC 170 lb ranks).

I know you train at XTC, but I’ve been under the impression that Bonnar was more or less pushed out the door when the Coleman fight was signed. Wish to shine any light on that widely reported story?

wouldve expected this to happen in the wec, but glad they’re getting a fight. would be great if they can end up with a fotn bonus for their troubles.
Yeah, WEC might have been a better look for both these guys in the long run.
But fuck, I love this fight.

That’s what I was wondering, actually.

Is it being streamed anywhere?

As of right now, not live…. but after the conclusion there will be streams.

I can't wait....
to see Junior Dos Santos leave CroCop’s head embedded in the Octagon fence.

Yep that's a fight I've wanted ever since he koed werdum..
Which will land first? Deadly Head kicks? Or bombs for fists?
I think dos santos comes out on top here.. But either way, I think it would bring the fireworks..

I hope there are fireworks
Though, lately, CroCop is too tentative against threatening strikers. I think he could take too long to pick his spot and Cigano could pounce him.

Well I still consider cigano ending the fight with a one sided beating as fireworks...
One sided blasting of mirko would still be fun to watch IMO..

As do I
I predict CroCop looking eerily similar to a dizzied Dhalsim before the fight ends.

Sweet. I’m very excited by all this new blood. I wonder how much Zuffa’s roster is gonna swell.

i dunno. isn’t a safe assumption that the losers of alot of these undercard fights will be sent packing? not a ton of name recognition there. still glad to see them getting a shot regardless.
I don’t agree. Lot of guys there with promise. I could see a couple maybe getting cut.

yeah absolutely, i’m sure it’ll depend greatly on how the fights go. but if the ufc views them as having so much promise, why weren’t they signed sooner? we shall see.
Sooner how?
These two gents are the only fighters on the undercard that aren’t UFC veterans, and they were in Affliction until about a week ago.

The undercard is as stacked as a Strikeforce maincard, but I still wouldn’t be surprised to see any of those guys cut if they lose. Outside Sherk, of course.

No chance
…and he’s going to win this fight.
"The reason a rabbit outruns a fox is because the rabbit is running for his life and the fox is running for his dinner."
No way. He might get relegated to a fight night against a nobody. If he loses that one…I don’t want to think about that.

One nice thing about Sherk
..he can move weight. But he’s way too great a commodity to just release into the wild. And, again— he doesn’t lose this fight. Absolutely no way. I’ve been having to bite my lip hard enough to draw blood after his mind boggling performance against Edgar, but the real Sherk is about to reemerge.
"The reason a rabbit outruns a fox is because the rabbit is running for his life and the fox is running for his dinner."
If his knees really are shot…I don’t know man. Tibau is one of the few lightweights that can get reasonably close to Sherk’s brute strength (though I don’t think he has near the control that Sherk can impose). Outside of the knees thing, I think Sherk takes this a hundred and one times out of a hundred, but if they’re gone…Sherk could very easily be done soon.

Yeah man
I was the one that broke the knees thing here, having heard it from someone that knows him personally and trains with him. But no one else I know has said word one about it, so I think it was compensation for his boxing experiment. I’m pretty sure he’s okay.
"The reason a rabbit outruns a fox is because the rabbit is running for his life and the fox is running for his dinner."
Sherk will out point Tibau…. Tibau’s only chance is if he catches Sherk with a submission, to which I don’t see that happening.

I’m glad to see the tractor getting signed with the UFC, he looked clearly saddend by the Affliction card being canceled. But good for him and will be rooting for him even tho i also like Dan Lauzon.
