Quote of the Day: Georges St Pierre: Kenny Florian "Better Human Being Than" B.J. Penn

Bj_penn_georges_st_pierre_bmp_medium

"I've trained with him two times and he looked really sharp. I put my money on him against B.J. Penn.

"Kenny Florian is a great training partner, and is going to be a great champion, and he's also a greater person and human being (than B.J. Penn)."

Georges St Pierre talking to MMA Weekly about training partner Kenny Florian.

Because?

Whining equates to being a bad human being?

Since when?

It’s obvious why GSP is going out of his way to hate on Penn.

GSP feels like he didn’t cheat intentionally, even though he was caught.

BJ disagrees.

First the Thiago 100% will beat Penn if they were to fight, now Florian is a better human being.

GSP is just being a little bitch right now, too.

Seriously, shouldn’t GSP be focused on Thiago instead of talking shit about Penn?

by MickDawg on Jul 3, 2009 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

I’m sure GSP called a press conference to make that statement……..OR…he was asked a question and he responded. Kind of funny you think GSP is acting like a bitch, whatever makes you happy I guess.

MickDawg has every right to think that

Just like you have every right to hate on BJ. That’s what makes it an opinion…

by Ryjo on Jul 3, 2009 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, it's not like a press conference...

But every interview he gets, he’s hating on Penn.

Every chance he gets leading up to UFC 100

I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts hating at a press conference.

by MickDawg on Jul 4, 2009 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

And one more thing

Lots of fighters are cool with Penn, and think he’s a good guy.

Fans who don’t know shit about the man personally, shouldn’t comment about him as a human being.

Hate on his work ethic, his shit talking, his ego…whatever you want.

I’m sure he’s done more for the community, more for the troops and more for the fans that most people will ever do.

by MickDawg on Jul 3, 2009 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

more for the troops

This one seems kind of out of place given that Penn is a Hawaiian nationalist, and one of their biggest gripes is the American military in Hawaii….

BJ Penn, Michael Bisping, Urijah Faber and Carlos Condit have done more for the troops than most people. They went over and put on a seminar.

That's your opinion...

Yet, he’s cool with most fighters who know him better than you’ll ever know him.

You know who was being an ass though?

KenFlo

I mean, he was doing nothing to Din…then..

Din Thomas CLEARLY injures himself and Kenny submits him.

Afterwards, he celebrates like he’s won the UFC belt or something.

OK, KenFlo…you didn’t do shit. Why are you celebrating?

Then he proceeds to say “I FINISH FIGHTS”.

Nice one Flo.

by MickDawg on Jul 3, 2009 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

obviously Din isn't holding any grudges

otherwise he wouldn’t have gone to train with K Flo recently?

by noscarznoproof on Jul 3, 2009 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The point is, it made him look like a jagoff

a little. I don’t dislike florian…I think, assuming BJ comes in shape for this fight and doesn’t gas, Florian has very little shot of beating him, though.

Having said that, Kenflo acted like it was his first time winning a fight after the Thomas fight. It rubbed some people the wrong way and made him look like a d-bag.

by Ryjo on Jul 3, 2009 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

True

But the person complaining Penn is an “ass” because of his pre-fight hype, those same fighters are cool with Penn now…Hughes, Sherk, Pulver, Joe Daddy.
The exception is GSP.

Fighters understand that’s part of the hype.

Most fans understand that, I would believe.

Some fans use that as fuel for hate, even when fighters don’t.

GSP beat him twice

He sure as hell didn’t “whip” him in their first fight. BJ gassed and got taken down, and used his legendary guard to severely minimize any damage taken.

by Ryjo on Jul 3, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Basically...

he needs to train with people that don’t give a shit that he is BJ Penn and don’t buy into his nickname, The Prodigy, like he himself does.

by Razreshat on Jul 3, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Love him or hate him

He definitely is a prodigy. Talk about accelerated learning curves in MMA/BJJ…

by Ryjo on Jul 3, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure, he is a prodigy...

but him believing that is as much a problem for his success as a fighter as anything else.

GSP is also a prodigy, probably a bigger one than Penn…but he approaches MMA like a guy with no talent that has to train his ass off to compete…which is why he is sooooo much better than just about anyone else, especially Penn.

by Razreshat on Jul 3, 2009 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think GSP is a bigger prodigy

GSP is a freakishly athletic, strong, hard-working individual. His victories are the result of athleticism and work ethic more than his natural ability, IMO (not saying that as a slight to his natural abilities as a martial artist, but rather in admiration of his work ethic).

Point is, if he ever fully tapped his potential, he’d probably be the greatest of all time (at least one of them…gonna be hard to top Fedor in the all-time p4p list), regardless of what people thought of his attitude.

by Ryjo on Jul 3, 2009 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No one denies his natural talent.

He is probably the single most gifted martial artist I’ve ever seen.

And that is why it is such a goddamn shame that he doesn’t train in a way to maximize those gifts.

Can you imagine if you took BJ’s talent and paired it with the work ethic of a Sean Sherk or a GSP?

Then he really could do things like going up to 205 and winning.

by Ryjo on Jul 3, 2009 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

too bad those learning curves were years ago…..being the quickest to get your black belt doesnt mean much if you havent added much to your game since UFC’s in the 30’s and 40’s. the game is passing BJ by, and he’s not really doing anything but crying and suing his way to an early professional grave

by erogers72 on Jul 4, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree for the most part

We saw leading up to the second fight how Penn’s camp consists of family and friends/yes men. It’d do him a world of good to train at a place like Xtreme Couture, where he’d be surrounded with better partners and would be forced to train harder and more frequently.

Most importantly, training at a camp like that would help his mental approach to the fight game. He is phenomenally talented, but if he works hard enough at improving his approach and training, he can become one of the best ever—something he claimed he wanted to be prior to the Stevenson fight.

by Ryjo on Jul 3, 2009 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Xtreme Couture didn’t do shit for Wanderlei.

Any LW’s from Xtreme Couture top 10?

Penn’s skills are up there, his cardio at LW is not bad, but could use some help.

I have a hard time believing any LW can go 4 rounds against a greased up GSP.

Penn will be fine w/o Xtreme Couture.

OK

I stand corrected on the top 10 front.

by MickDawg on Jul 3, 2009 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not hating on Penn

On the contrary, I think he’s by far the best 155 lb. fighter in the world. I do think it’d benefit him to train with some different guys who keep him focused a little better and who force him to train even harder, though. One of his problems is that there’s not many guys who can challenge him in training, so moving to a camp with a solid wrestler like Maynard and with some bigger wrestlers would be good for him—especially if he wants a third fight with GSP at some point in time.

And the cardio training would be great for him. But bottom line is that it’d be good for him to get some other training partners in. Xtreme Couture would work, IMO, but other camps could as well.

by Ryjo on Jul 3, 2009 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think it’s necessary.

But I can see what you’re saying…

It wouldn’t hurt if Penn trained for a short period elsewhere.

Penn has said himself, learn from as many people as you can.

by MickDawg on Jul 3, 2009 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

If/when he beats Florian and Diego, if there’s an opening for a re-match with Rush, I hope he will train with another camp with bigger guys who have a strong wrestling base. Even though GSP is a complete mixed martial artist, I feel like his main strategy in most fights will be to use striking just to set up takedowns (or shoot immediately if he’s facing a striker with poor base/takedown defense) until someone can stuff his takedowns or hurt him from the bottom. He’s that dominant of a wrestler.

by Ryjo on Jul 3, 2009 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Disagree

So OK, what I got from your post is:
Penn has
1) suck ass camp
2) doesn’t improve fast enough
3) relies on talent only

When is it not enough to be the best at your weight class?

He’s supposed to switch camps because he couldn’t beat GSP.

That’s ridiculous.

He’s still the most talented LW.

Who does Fedor have in his gym? ALL INFERIOR FIGHTERS, and it’s not even close.

Aoki recently got KTFO by Mach…but he’s considered top 2 at LW.

Should he switch camps because you feel he’s not evolving.

Maybe everyone should go to Xtreme Couture.

We’re talking about a guy who lost to the best WW possibly ever.

I don’t agree.

BJ's complaints about not being able to hold onto Georges were absurd.

Georges was slippery because he gets his body waxed before fights, so your hairy legs couldn’t get a grip on him.

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

by Llewdor on Jul 3, 2009 4:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Not really

when he was taken down in the 2nd round, BJ tried working a high guard, at which point his legs immediately slid down GSP’s back like a waterslide. We’ve also all seen the application of vaseline to GSP’s back. Whether it was intentional or not, it very well could have been the difference early in the 2nd round.

By the time the 3rd started, however, BJ was so beyond gassed that it wouldn’t have mattered at all.

by Ryjo on Jul 3, 2009 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kenny’s really surprised me with how much he’s improved but BJ’s still on another level skill-wise, and he’s in shape. Kenny has better cardio and a more diverse striking game, but BJ’s physical strength, boxing, wrestling, and BJJ are far superior.

BJ’s is also probably kooky enough to think demolishing Kenny will get him another shot at GSP – it’s the type of mentality that will motivate him to be in prime shape.

by MMAEruption on Jul 3, 2009 5:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Kenny's striking game does have me a little worried for BJ

but considering that BJ couldn’t get finished by Machida, I’m not too worried. It’s also worth noting that gassing and being outwrestled led to his downfall in both GSP fights, and that a separated rib led to his loss to Hughes…

As nasty as Kenny’s kicks and hellbows are, they aren’t comparable to GSP or Machida. Plus, his chin’s nowhere near as strong as BJ’s…

Atleast Frank Mir has some kind of personality in his interviews...

GSP is like the most generic good guy in MMA history, and I personally feel like a lot of it comes off forced… However, I think it’s good for his image, and his physique, talent, looks, and his perceived good guy personality is the reason he is on the Canadian Cover of Undisputed, has a deal with Gatorade, and has a premier sports agent back him up…

Fans need good guys and bad guys in all entertainment, so GSP can do no evil, even when he’s caught greasing, or starting the beef with Matt Serra (there was no bad blood until GSP started making excuses for the Serra loss, and talking shit, even tho they were cool with each other up until that point)… Just like Karo and BJ are always the bad guys no matter what they do, or no matter what other fighters make similar decisions/mistakes….

Freakin’ BJ…

I really used to like him, as a person and as a fighter, but my opinion of him has gone down recently, due to the whole “Greasegate” scandal.

He reminds me so much of an East L.A. cholo in those videos, and it’s kind of ugly (I lived in East Los for a few years, so I know one when I see one). It’s funny, the things BJ considers talking shit is “you better train hard” and “get ready to lose your belt”. Seems pretty reasonable to me…But did K Fizzle really call Beej washed up? That sounds a bit out of character for him.

I still really hope Ken takes this one. It’s nice to see hard work pay off, and he seems like a decent guy.

I think it's all just talk to hype up the fight..

I think these guys really respect each other… Plus BJ did say he was gonna be the good guy on this countdown show unlike what happened in primetime. So maybe all the smack talk will be coming from kenny this time around..

It is common practice in countdown shows for the crew to let them know what the opponent said and get their reply to that certain statement. If you haven’t figured this out, go watch a countdown show, and ponder how they make the smack talk relate so seamlessly.

So, after BJ got done filming, he was so bothered that he thought he’d just go on ahead and put up 2 youtube videos replying to shit he already talked about on the countdown show? Really BJ? Why not go punch a sparring partner, go for a jog, get over it, or something…useful. If the trash you have to talk is equals out to be less than 60 seconds of video…it’s just not worth it.
