UFC's "Generous Offer" to Fedor

What M-1 meant by the UFC's"very generous offer"....

By: Carmichael Dave
CBS Radio MMA Host
Twitter.com/Carmichaeldave

So we all know the deal with M-1 and what they are saying about co-promotion. I'm not here to say who's right and wrong in this deal, but I can tell you some of the specifics that were offered to Fedor.....

- The UFC offered Fedor a 6 fight, 30 million dollar contract. That's 5 mil a fight

- The UFC offered Fedor an immediate title shot

- Lesnar/Fedor would be the biggest PPV in MMA history (we assume), and the UFC offered M-1 Global a cut of the PPV on top of Fedor's purse.

- Fedor was free to wear as many M-1 logoed items as he wished.

- The UFC also relented on allowing Fedor to compete in combat sambo.

Apparently, for good or bad, M-1 refuses to sign a deal unless the UFC agrees to co-promote.

I can tell you right now, the boys at ZUFFA will never, EVER agree to that. So if M-1 doesnt relent on that item alone, the Fedor to UFC talks are dead. Look for Team Emelianenko to turn to Strikeforce next. With co-promotions already in the books with Affliction, that shouldnt be a stopping point.

Well that's about as far as the UFC is going to take it. Ball is in M-1's court.

They just need to back off that co-promote bullshit and they will have landed their fighter a killer deal.

It’s official. They are on crack if they don’t take it.

There’s no way they can get more money than that in a “co-promotion” with anyone else. 5 m + PPV buys per fight? That’s ridiculous.

by Phildo on Jul 29, 2009 10:25 PM EDT reply actions

If true, that’s a heck of a deal for Fedor. Far beyond what I imagined the offer would be. The UFC is even throwing in a % for all of the scumbags that surround Fedor.

Time for Fedor do what’s best for he and his family.

Seriously, if that’s the deal being offered, the Fertittas and Dana deserve a medal. That’s how you operate a big time sports business.

I’ve always laughed when they said a more powerful UFC would pay fighters less. That’s actual professional sports money.

If M-1 is getting points on the PPV then they’ll be making millions per fight as well. I have a hard time believing this is actually what they offered, that must be twice what any other fighter makes.

This way no person can say the UFC didn’t try their asses off to get the best fighter in the world. It works out for them…they always claim to want to put on the best fights, now they save a ton of money and look good doing it.

If some fighter wants to bitch about it, tell him to go be undefeated his whole career and come back when he pulls that off.

That’s part of what makes me doubt it, why would they make this public and risk pissing off every other top fighter on their roster? oh and i should clarify that when i said...

…. “alot of people”, i shouldve said “alot of fighters”. whether this deal is accepted is kinda of irrelevant. just the fact that it was offered is gonna make a laundry list of other guys start yelling “what about me?”.

what was the offer they supposedly gave fedor that set off the couture/affliction mess in the first place? 3 million a fight? that’s small potatoes compared to this.

by woooburn on Jul 29, 2009 11:28 PM EDT up reply actions

big difference: UFC can profit from it. Affliction couldn’t.

yeah, that’s kind of a seperate issue though. i was more speaking to the fact that a SMALLER offer than this, set off a chain of events where their heavyweight champion tried to jump ship. not saying that’s set to happen again, but they shouldnt be surprised if they big names start clamoring for bigger paychecks when it’s time to renegotiate.

yeah, you’re probably right. i suppose the operative word in my last post was TRIED (to jump ship). they can raise their asking prices all they want, but if they don’t have anywhere else to fight (at that pay scale), it’s not gonna get them very far.

Didn’t they say they topped the ufc’s offer? If money isn’t an issue then why the fuck would you not take it and have your brand be worn by the greatest heavyweight ever on the greatest org on earth? This whole co promoting bullshit has a lot to do with jealousy and mooching off of others success.

It’s stupid then.

This is, by far, the most money they can expect. Yes, it’s less than some sick splitting of all the profits, but they have to realize they have absolutely no leverage here.

30 million is a lot of money. Just having Fedor wear M1 in the cage is much more effective than them actually saying, “this is a co-promotion with M1” during the broadcast.

If they don’t take this they need to lay off the vodka.

There is no middle with the current reported offer. It’s heavily in favor of Fedor and his people. There’s plenty of compensation to make them forget all about whatever issues they may have had with the contract stipulations.

Co-promotion simply isn’t an option. It’s not even on the table for discussion. There is zero incentive for the UFC to go down that road.

I’m not sure Fedor/Lesnar will top 1.5 mill buys. I do not think it will be the biggest PPV in UFC history. Especially since Mr. Logic said this fight will occur at 103, no way to have enough time to promote this fight.

Yeah, M-1 Global wants a hit and run, with Fedor taking the UFC HW belt, and coming straight to M-1. This is why M-1 wants co-promotion so bad…so the casual person will have even HEARD of them, and know that they have the UFC HW Champ. Thats the deal. That has to be it. UFC went as far as to give them a PPV percentage and it wasn’t enough. Vadim wants to be able to walk away with a money making machine and jumpstart M-1.

Fuck this “UFC isn’t Global” bullshit with M-1. FEDOR’S OWN BROTHER AND TRAINING PARTNER has said Vadim is using Fedor. I think the only thing we don’t know is how bad Fedor has been fucked over his whole career.

If my manager told me to turn down a 5 mil. a fight deal I would tell him to fuck off and sign the mother fucking contract. Period. No bullshit about it. My mom could be my manager and I’d tell her to shoove it if she told me to pass up this kind of deal.

With 6 fights, Fedor is going to lose. The UFC will put Brock Lesnar, Randy Couture, Lyoto Machida, & Anderson Silva as his opponents. And statistically, no one fighter is likely to come out the victor against all 4 of those guys.

I think deep down, Fedor knows they are just looking to get him beaten and get him out of there after his 6 fights are over. So he is now between a rock and a hard place…. He either gets a lot of money, gets beaten, and completely loses his aura…. Or he doesn’t sign, and looks scared now that Zuffa released these numbers.

The UFC has officially played hardball with Fedor. And they used the media to paint him into a corner.

That kind of contract is almost a decade ahead of it’s time…and this isn’t going to happen for your everyday fighter…

This is for sure Brent, but do they really think it will work? What pressure do Fedor or Finkie feel by this being in the open? They live in Russia, they don’t give a fuck what the American public thinks. All this is gonna do is piss off dozens of the fighters currently on their roster. You think Brock Lesnar won’t remember this when his contract is up? He can’t have many fights left on his deal.

I don’t think they’re actually going to let him kill me... And if he does kills me, book sales will really go up. Boom…win-win, bitch.- Forrest Griffin on Anderson Silva

They better give a shit about what the american mma fans think. M-1 is coming to LA aug 28th. And there’s no better place for MMA right now then North America.

So what? Fedor isn’t fighting there, they are gonna lose money on that show no matter what.

From Sherdog
M-1 Global suggested it could take legal action against Affliction regarding the cancellation of the Aug. 1 event. “We’re exploring all options at this time, legally, with regard to Affliction and what we believe took place,” said Mark Hines, attorney for M-1 Global and Emelianenko. “We’re not prepared to say where we’re going to go with this, but I can promise you and I can promise Affliction that if something was done wrong, somebody will be held responsible.”

Why doesn’t M-1 really know what happened? They were the copromoters, right?

two more quotes
Finkelstein said the UFC made a new offer to Emelianenko, and M-1 Global made a counteroffer. However, Finkelstein said Emelianenko would not proceed without a co-promotional effort between M-1 and the UFC where they shared expenses and profits.

This makes no sense – am I the only one that does not understand why M-1 would counteroffer?

"If we had such an offer two years ago which we got yesterday, maybe we would be (interested), but not in today’s situation –- we cannot accept that offer," said Finkelstein.

If this offer is no good today but would have been okay two years ago – how much do they really think Fedor is worth?

What possible expenses could M-1 have in co-promoting a fight? Travel? Hotel? Meals? What the fuck would they have to spend money on. They have virtually no infrastructure. It would be the UFC taking on the expenses and M-1 gobbling up the profits. That’s Vadim’s idea of “sharing”.

Their options get narrower as time goes on and they think their position is stronger? hmm…

Sounds like the Affliction events are making him think that he can actually draw. Ridiculous.

It's not

if he knocks out Brock Lesnar, or submits him, or beats him in a 5-round war. He won’t draw initially with a lot of newer fans in America, but he’ll draw fans in other countries and the hardcore MMA fans in this country. And if he beats Lesnar, and then were to beat Couture and possibly Nogueira? He’d sure as hell become a major draw…

If this is the offer Dana gave...

And Fedor and his puppet master Fink said no, then I think Dana is going to be in war mode. War Dana
