Clouds Gather for UFC Deal After Fedor Emelianenko Conference Call

Fedor_emelianenko_3_mediumBloodyElbow will be on today's Fedor Emelianenko call later this afternoon. But in the mean time I wanted to keep the breathless speculation and rumor-mongering going.

First up the LA Times adds an update:

The chief operating officer of Fedor Emelianenko's promotional company, M-1 Global, confirmed to The Times in an e-mail early this morning that the heavyweight, considered the world's best mixed martial arts fighter, is engaged in "intense negotiations with the UFC."

Joost Raimond told The Times that contract talks "are ongoing, but we have not reached any kind of agreement at this time."

And the buzz I'm hearing from the elves and birds that ping me with unsourced rumors, tweets and IMs throughout the day is not good.

UPDATE From MMA Junkie:

(3:30 p.m. ET on 7/29/09: A source close to the UFC makes the prospects of Emelianenko fighting in the UFC sound much more promising. The source said UFC officials have devoted much of their resources to working on a deal to sign the fighter in time for an official announcement during Friday's media call, as the L.A. Times initially reported. Sources close to M-1, though, continue to state such a deal is "unlikely.")

The odds against Fedor's infamously hard to deal with management and the hardball UFC brass cutting a deal seemingly remain as high as ever.

Stay tuned to Bloody Elbow as Michael Rome will be updating this post with news from the conference call.

Update 1:  The call finally starts...with Jerry Millen.  The MMA world just hasn't been the same without him.  Nevermind, maybe it's not starting.  Whatever.

Update 2:  Vadim is up.  Says there have been negotiations with the UFC and other companies.  Not much else.

Update 3:  Jerry Millen says Fedor will "headline" EA Sports' video game, which doesn't make any sense.  I'm sure it makes Dana happy though.  Fedor thanks everyone for coming.

Update 4:  Reporter asks if Vadim plans any legal action against Affliction.  Vadim says they will weigh all the options.  M-1's attorney basically threatens Affliction and promises that if anything was done wrong, M-1 will go after the people responsible.

Update 5:  MDS of MMA Fanhouse asks Fedor if he plans to meet Dana White.  Answer is unintelligible.  Sounds like Dana did talk to Fedor, but I'm not sure.  UFC made a "good offer" to Fedor and M-1 made a counter-offer involving co-promotion.  Says Fedor has many good offers he can take.

Update 6:  Josh Gross asks why Fedor can't do the same deal GSP, Anderson Silva, and every other big fighter signs?  Evasive answer.  Why is co-promotion so important?  Answer: M-1 is very big, we develop MMA all over the world.  This is all talking points about M-1 at this point.  It sounds like UFC came forward with a big offer, and now M-1 offered something back very different involving co-promotion.  Amusingly, they say M-1's goal is to make MMA really popular all over the world.

Update 7:  Beau Dure at USA Today asks what co-promotion really means?  Evasive answer.  Personal guess: it rhymes with scribe.  Now they're going on at length about all the shows they are going to promote.  They are just ignoring questions at this point and just talking about whatever they want.  They say negotiations were productive, but they will only work on a co-promotion basis.  Someone asks if he's leaning toward Strikeforce, and the answer is just that Strikeforce is one of their possible partners.

Update 8:  Someone asks about Aleksander's quote about Vadim, they blow it off.  Nothing is happening on this call, no announcement, it's just a PR stunt.

That’s true. If Fedor has his head so far up M-1’s ass then let him retire. Everyone will always wonder if he would have beat Couture, Mir and Lesnar and only Fedor will be to blame.

How many former UFC champions does a man have to beat to get some respect? (Nog, Timmay, Andre)

Actually, not that I think about it….Fedor has beaten more Former UFC Champions than Anderson Silva, GSP, Frank Mir or Brock Lesnar.

by P4P is a stupid concept on Jul 29, 2009 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I give Fedor all the respect in the world and I would say he’s the #1 HW in the world right now. But beating Arlovski and Silvia (both out of their primes and Silvia sucks anyway) doesn’t really add to Fedor’s record other than name recognition.

by SBrooks1 on Jul 29, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

but they are all former champs. So therefore, if Fedor comes to the UFC and beats Randy and Mir, does that also prove nothing?

Randy and Mir aren’t out of their primes. Randy, even at his old age, could still beat most HW’s in the UFC. Same with Mir. Fedor is a great fighter and deserves his #1 ranking but he’s still got a lot to prove in my eyes.

I dispute Brock's title.

He lost to Mir. Then he beat Randy. Ok. Technically he is “the champ”, however there is one guy in that 4 man equation that Brock has not fought yet….. Big Nog. Given his submission skills and ability to sustain a beating, I think Nog has a very good chance to beat Lesnar. Given that Lesnar was given a made-up “interim title”, I can’t fully take my hat off to him until he beats Noguiera.

Fedor needs to take control of his career

If he wants to be the best ever, make real money, and fight the best fighters in the world . . . he needs to sign with the UFC. He has to know how much M-1 is hurting him right now. They have no bargaining power. Zuffa could turn Fedor into a mainstream fightgame legend if he would only let them.

I lived in Russia for three years, so I know how loyal they are towards each other and how in every part of life Russians mistrust outsiders. But what the UFC offers him . . . he has to know its the only place left. Where is he gonna go, Strikeforce? Brett Rogers, Alistair Overeem, and Fabricio Werdum are good fighters but come on! Dream or Sengoku? Really?

Come on Fedor, step up! Dana will take good care of you.

It seems they are actually ramping up their next event in LA on the 28th, and they did manage to at least sign Lawal vs. Frye. It may be little profit, but it’s something.

But would he even get paid in Japan? I assume you mean Dream rather than Sengoku, but if they’re struggling pehaps they would want to use him at NYE, which is a long time away. Do Dream even have the money to pay him, against either Barnett or Overeem?

by StevenGiles on Jul 29, 2009 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I have to disagree..

No one knows who Fedor is in Russia. Plus GSP, has already proven to draw record gates and PPV buys in Canada. I even bet Anderson Silva in Brazil could draw more money in that weak economy than Fedor. Plus you don’t think Brock Lesnar with his freakshow aura in Japan wouldn’t be big money. Let’s not forget Fedor wasn’t even a draw in Pride.

I have to disagree with your disagreement

You do remember that Putin went to his fight in St. Petersburg. That would seem to suggest he is pretty well known in Russia.
In any event, Fedor is gaining noteriety everyday in the US simply cause the sport is growing so rapidly.

I do want him in the UFC. Badly.

I just think it is silly how people think Fedor has to somehow prove something by beating a rookie who was given a belt in his 3rd pro fight, rather than the other way around.

by P4P is a stupid concept on Jul 29, 2009 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I want to watch

the best MMA fights. Period. I could give a fuck by which promoter. But guess what? The UFC is the best promoter with the best fighters. Why fight the system? Support MMA by supporting the UFC and any promoter putting on good fights. And no, Fedor vs Zulu isn’t top notch. If the UFC let Lesnar have 1 easy fight people would be screaming murder.

If you think that there isn’t a HW on earth who could defeat Fedor you are insane. EVERYONE can lose.

Does anyone think that maybe since this story broke out so early that maybe, just maybe, Fedor’s people are trying to cover their ass to not let the cat out of the bag this early by now telling people talks are ongoing. I feel like a deal is still possibly in place to be announced on Friday, and right now Fedor’s people are doing the whole denying, but not really denying bit. Just a thought.

by filipinomix2oo0 on Jul 29, 2009 3:35 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah

My opinion is tomorrow’s presser loses a lot of heat if this is announced today. Remember, Dana was denying a deal with Couture the day before the announcement.

Fedor is letting his management kill his career. By not signing with the world’s preeminent MMA organization he’s looking downright foolish.

Imagine a world where Ali only fought in Golden Gloves, Barry Sanders played in the CFL, and Tiger was playing on the Nationwide Tour. That is essentially what Fedor is doing. I’m not an avid fan of his, but I cannot deny his talent. I’ve never seen anyone so willing to turn his back on his own career over a few bucks.

Without Affliction and UFC’s money M-1 will never amount to anything of any consequence. Which is M-1’s overall goal, is it not?

PS: None of this is pertinent if he signs the fucking contract.

This updated was on MMA Junkies website

(UPDATE, 3:30 p.m. ET on 7/29/09: A source close to the UFC makes the prospects of Emelianenko fighting in the UFC sound much more promising. The source said UFC officials have devoted much of their resources to working on a deal to sign the fighter in time for an official announcement during Friday’s media call, as the L.A. Times initially reported. Sources close to M-1, though, continue to state such a deal is “unlikely.”)

Lovely.

So, the EA deal is done, meaning the UFC will never deal with him, or does it? Ridiculous. All this for a video game announcement? Now he can fight all the best Heavyweights in Japanese MMA, plus a juiced up Barnett – in a video game! WoWoWoW!

by LeonDaLion on Jul 29, 2009 4:21 PM EDT reply actions

EA deal was done awhile ago. The UFC would have to be complete morons to not know he had signed on with EA before the most recent negotiations. I doubt the video game would be a problem.

But seriously guys, did anyone actually expect something worthwhile from this conference call? If it was a big announcement, it would have been a joint press conference with the UFC – or at the very least UFC would be making the announcement.

THIS could be a hint

Think about it. If he was planning on signing or was close to a deal, and if the UFC had a press conference for Friday, then of course they would not announce it today, and step on Dana’s toes. That’s what I’m thinking. Again, that’s my optimism talking.

Then don't have a fucking press conference.

Someone needs to explain the idea of press conference better to M-1. They don’t seem to grasp the concept.

Overeem or Werdum are the only two who could even come close to helping his ranking. If you’re doing “traditional” style subjective rankings then anything but a dominance won’t even help.

Though Its Funny To Watch Everyone's Reaction Go From High To Low...

The negotiations will still be going on until next week and a deal could still be done.
I am pretty sure at some point we will get a “deal is close” or “deal falls apart” exclusive in the next few days, everyone should just wait.

A deal has not been able to get done in the span of 3 years, so it didn’t have much of a chance to get done in just a few days.

Since Fedor is a big Russian pride guy, there should be a UFC Moscow where all the opponents come out to “America, Fuck Yeah”, while burning Russian flags, wearing Lenin pics on their crotches, smashing vodka bottles on the ground, and screaming in Russian FUCK YOU COMMIES. That should piss em off enough to fight for free.

If the UFC wants to lure Fedor… they’d have to acknowledge he exists on a PPV with Brock coming out to “Eye of the Tiger” and burning Russian flags and disrespecting Russia loudly. I mean, he’d have to make Fedor angry somehow for them to sign this shit… and if you make Fedor angry… I wouldn’t want to be in his fucking way at all. Fuck that!

Some Pretty Interesting News ...
Sources indicated that Hieron was in talks with both Strikeforce and the Ultimate Fighting Championship that came down to the wire. One of the deciding factors between the two promotions appears to be Hieron having already committed to appearing in the upcoming MMA video game from EA Sports, a challenger to the UFC branded THQ video game "UFC 2009 Undisputed."

It was announced on Wednesday that Fedor Emelianenko – still in talks with the UFC – will don the cover of the EA Sports game.

Hieron isn’t exactly comparable to Fedor…I think bringing the #1 HW in the world is more important than the video game issues.

It just shows that the UFC may actually stick to this whole EA ban stuff, though, I am pretty sure they threw it out the window for Fedor, unless it was part of the UFC deal to cancel his appearance in EA Sports MMA. Either way, it is all very interesting.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jul 29, 2009 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, interesting, but I think EA is going to have a rude awakening when they release their game, they won’t get 1/4 of the profit that THQ turned. People bought the UFC game for the simple fact it was UFC…now EA is going to slap Fedor on the cover of their game along with a tribal design and see how it goes. Unless their gameplay outshines THQ’s to an extreme extent…they don’t have shit. But, we’ll see how it goes.

So , definitinely no Fedor in the UFC?

It seems that Fedor wants to push M1 and that the negociation with the UFC are a failure.

They could even sue Affliction. Will Fedor fight on the M1 card in August? I probably that Fedor will now fight in DREAM in Japan.

The guy who was saying that Fedor will go to the UFC and that Affliction gave Fedor contract to the UFC was apparently wrong.

With the insistence that at co-promotion take place as the the deal-maker/breaker and everyone realizing that it doesn’t benefit the UFC in any way. Look at all the negative feelings towards Fedor and his management.

maybe...maybe not...

if Fedor ends up in the UFC in the next week or two…he is right.

most of us “in the know” had sources saying it was close to a done deal.

And thats what people are over looking…A LOT of sources are saying the exact opposite than Fedor and Co. So…we’ll see. I still have a bit of hope for the Friday press conference. But at this point, I really don’t care.

I’m going to guess your sources were coming from the UFC side b/c the M-1 guys seem pretty defiant to the death.

by Sokonojudo on Jul 29, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t get why people think that still isn’t the case.

Would anyone really put it past Dana, Zuffa, even M1 to have them make this announcement today just to build up more hype for Friday?

by Phildo on Jul 29, 2009 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

To built the hype?

It would be a little extrem no? The UFC does not treat Fedor as the best fighter in the world, we want M1 copromotion, fedor part of M1 , no UFC domination etc… etc….

Why would they say that?

by JackO on Jul 29, 2009 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

To make the internet explode when they announce the signing on Friday?

by Phildo on Jul 29, 2009 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Why did everyone say the UFC didn’t buy Pride up until the second it was announced? Why did Dana say Randy wasn’t signed the day before it was announced?

Why did Jerry Jones say all offseason that he wasn’t going to cut TO?

by Phildo on Jul 29, 2009 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions   2 recs

How can you guarantee this?

Have you read everything?

EA cover, co promotion, not treating Fedor as the best fighter, no UFC domination, necogiation with other, they don’t want to wait etc…

All his pointing that he will not be in UFC

by JackO on Jul 29, 2009 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions

What they say in public isn’t necessarily what they are saying at the negotiating table.

Ok but how the UFC will react

This is almost a slap for them this conference and I don’t see someone like Wgite accepting this. I am waiting for the F-bombs and the crazy russians speechs.

by JackO on Jul 29, 2009 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

This is worse than anything Tito has said over the last year or what Randy said when he was “resigned?”

by Phildo on Jul 29, 2009 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions   2 recs

rec’d

When there is a ton of money at stake, people lie during negotiations to gain an advantage. I don’t know why this is so hard to for people to understand. Do people think Dana publicly says Fedor is not top 10 p4p or Tito says he’ll never sign with the UFC or $kala says EliteXC is healthy because that’s what they really believe? Do they think that Russians are more honest than America’s? If you guys think these Russians are crazy, try doing business with the Chinese.

by Jahbulon on Jul 29, 2009 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Did I miss the part of the press conference where they said they are 100% NOT signing with the UFC?

by Phildo on Jul 29, 2009 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Let's not forget

It is in their best interest to play hard-to-get, even if they are gotten. They lose bargaining leverage if they can no longer pretend to be courting other interests.

I’d still like to see what exactly mmalogic said so that the proper “ha-has” or kudos can be distributed when the reckoning comes.

The UFC was ready to co promote ? I find hard to believe that.

Or do you thaink that M1 is trying to hard ball and pressure the UFC for more money? UFC domination ect… seems harsh.

And Fedor on the cover or EA game is not that a deal breaker?

by JackO on Jul 29, 2009 5:58 PM EDT reply actions

Well, Randy is supposed to be in the game as well.

Questions:

If M1 is a global promoter why did they need Affliction?
If M1 is global why do they need any promoter?
Is Fedor a robot or has he been brain washed?
What happens when Don Frye/Abbot/Kimo/Campbell Soup can KOs Fedor?
With WAMMAs belt now on Ebay, what is Fedor champion of?
Is it possible that today Josh is more beloved than Fedor?
And last:

Will Dana White fly in with his UFC cape and save Fedor from certain doom?

Stay tuned.

Next Year

Fedor will sign with the UFC. Affliction took a while to go belly up. I think 6 months to a year is ample time for M-1 to bleed its money dry.

by cyph on Jul 29, 2009 6:31 PM EDT reply actions

Huge fan of Fedor but I’m seriously starting to lose respect for him. He needs to fight the best especially given his age. Bret Rogers, Alister Overeem and Werdum are not the best opponents for him, he needs to go to the UFC.

Even though the UFC can be corporate wankers, I’m starting to believe that they are the good guys in this scenario.

Who the hell do M1 think they are, the UFC will not co-promote shit with them, are they out of their minds? The biggest MMA organisation in the world is going to start to do co-promotions now with every dick and harry just to sign Fedor? That’s insane, and never going to happen.

And if Fedor has half a brain he will realise that M-1 want the best for them and not for Fedor!

by Ilias on Jul 29, 2009 6:36 PM EDT reply actions

i know maybe M1 can Co promote with campbells, M1 provides the fedor, campbells provies the tomato cans. or maybe get them as a sponser.

Scott coker was unwilling to sign tito probably because he wanted to much i dont see fedor getting that much further

by Riley_96 on Jul 29, 2009 7:22 PM EDT reply actions

Well that was a worthless press conference. So did they actually go through all that trouble to announce nothing at all and avoid all questions?

by who me on Jul 29, 2009 7:26 PM EDT reply actions

If you read my post above, I mentioned before the conference started that this would be for the EA Sports game and M-1 August 28th show. No deal was finalized yet with the UFC, so they couldn’t announce that, even if it was done since UFC’s announcement will be on Friday.

P.S. Read my new fan post..
=)

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jul 29, 2009 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

As I said announce nothing at all and avoid all questions. Really at this point no one cares about him being in the EA game, that’s old news that is really irrelevant in terms of all the real news of the last week. It wasn’t even a EA press conference, what was the point?

As far as the M-1 event, why did they make this a big deal about Fedor answering questions if they were going to talk about something completely different? You think anyone would of been involved with a press conference call to talk about a M-1 event? The whole thing was a big boondoggle.

With the UFC snapping up all Afflictions other spare HWs, the signing of Cro-cop, Josh’s bust and Fedor’s destruction of Sylvia and AA, his list of potential opponents has shrunk a lot… as far as I can see the list contains Werdum, Overeem, Rogers and Monson, and thats about it.

Roger Gracie (good prospect), Buentello, Arlovski (if he gets his head right), Antonio Silva (license re-instated), etc.

by crinow on Jul 29, 2009 8:25 PM EDT up reply actions

why should people care about that?

I hate to break it to you guys, but for most professional athletes, it’s all about the money, why should Fedor be held to some other standard?

by Phildo on Jul 29, 2009 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

because he's not

“most professional athletes”

He’s been a hero to many for a long time, and if he is after a payday at the expense of his popularity and fans, it doesn’t make it any less disgusting. Most sports fans don’t look up to the Chad Ocho Cincos and other “hold out” cases. Take Brett Favre for example, he was one of the most beloved sports figures of all time. After he was asked to take a seat, he started acting stupid and selfish and he’s taken a severe PR hit for it.

by B Money on Jul 29, 2009 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Why has he been a hero?

I didn’t follow mma as much as I do now back then, but there seems to be a pattern. He’s always been going for the offer with the most money. I just don’t get why people would expect something different this time around.
