B.J. Penn Trying Not to Overtrain for Kenny Florian at UFC 101
Promoted from the FanPosts by Kid Nate.
After the (St. Pierre) fight, if I could have said, well, what mistakes did I make? I believe I trained too long. I started training five months for the fight because I was just so pumped about it; it was my dream fight, and maybe burned myself out a little bit.
Marv is the best I’ve ever seen and it’s good to have that kind of knowledge around. He works your balance and explosion, and your speed and your power. I think later on down the road, people are going to look back and think, ‘that Marv, he really knew what he was doing.
You’ll find out on Aug. 8 what BJ Penn is all about
--BJ Penn talking to MMAWeekly about how his trainer, Marv Marinovich is helping him not to overtrain this time around.

I think he’ll find a way to not overtrain.

I always thought he over-trained for all his fights. He’s always injured and getting surgery. God Bless him for recognizing his biggest flaw.

Not to mention, his fighting schedule is so aggressive and ambitious, he never has time to fully heal inbetween bouts.
I’m not sure how he finds time to eat chips inbetween corn-dogs.

Earlier I was very worried for BJ… I thought if ever there was a time at 155 to take him out it would be now. I used to make fun saying he spars with his gardeners – he’s doing a world class camp for this fight.
I too was feelin the Kenflo upset at first...
but BJ has brought in a who’s who of badassery to train with.
Iv never been a BJ fan so i havnt followed his career super close, but hasnt not having the propper training partners (along with poor cardio, denial, excuses, and lazyness) been one of his weaknesses?
Kenny’s kickboxing is dangerous, but BJ’s hands are so fast and he hits so hard. I think he’ll catch Kenflo, and kill the student… which doesnt sound as cool as killing the master, but hey.

The long national nightmare is over
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
Marv Marinovich, father of ‘Robo QB’ is a strength & conditioning legend. If BJ is truly following his ways, he will destroy Kenflo.
Isnt he
the one whos son played for the Raiders? I think I heard he had never had fast food till he got to the NFL or something crazy

ooo, oo, pick me I know, it was all that rock running that you did, it overworked your cardio.
I believe in B.J. Penn and absolutely believe that he has the right mind set going into this fight to take to and finish Kenny Florian.

I’d use that a a last resort if I were you as well, given your track record of predicting GSP losses.

I am doubtful that over-training is the reason why BJ gassed in the first round against GSP. Even though this may seem like a strange indicator, the best that I have seen BJ is ALWAYS when he has abs like when he fought Pulver, Stevenson and Sherk.
Post Failed!!!
There is no mentioning of Fedor signing w/ the UFC at all in this post…. at this juncture… this is an EPIC FAIL!! :)
well if you wait, BJ will find a way to post a vid implying that fedor trained with him.. :)

deigo is a beast.
even if penn gets past florian, he will get mauled by deigo sanchez, penn’s puny jabs are no match to deigo’s dynamic and pin point striking, he will put on a worse beating on penn than gsp, i dont get all the hype with this guy, he held two belts in the ufc at a time when ufc was up and coming, they didnt have all the talent, even guys like gsp and penn were students of the game, gsp have evolved because he is humble and ready to learn from anybody, penn’s ego is the size of eifel tower, he only poses with these top fighters in his videos only to showboat, i doubt he actually trains with them. mma is evolving so fast that his flexibility on the ground and stand up cant hold up against a talented well rounded fighter, like frank mir said you cant just rely on your gifted skills anymore to compete with top tier fighters.
1. Penn finished Joe Daddy in 2, but Diego couldn’t.
2. Diego looks to be losing his power from the weight cuts; Penn hits hard.
3. Penn has to be outmuscled & ground down to lose, neither of which Sanchez seems capable at LW.
4. Diego has never fought someone with BJJ as good as Penn’s.
5. Grammar is your friend – use it.

You, Sir, are correct.
I may think BJ is a lazy cry baby, but he’s levels above any of Sanchez’s previous competition.
"He built his whole reputation (as a) waffle house chef. They've been serving him up ham and eggs with a side of canned tomatoes." - Don Frye on Fedor Emelianenko
Diego is impossible to finish, and keeps a pace that is only rivaled by Clay Guida. Penn cannot keep such a pace in a multi-dimensional 5 round fight. Diego will wear Penn out.
Sherk?
Bigger and stronger than Diego. Didn’t work out so well for him.
yeah, that was an odd Sherk outing b/c I just knew he would go for takedowns relentlessly I didn’t expect him to stand and bang with BJ

Sherk may have bigger muscles, but is shorter, with a shorter reach, and fought a one dimensional fight.
There’s little comparison between Sherk’s style and Diego’s. And Sherk lasted 3 full rounds fighting a boxing match.
by Hardcharger on Jul 29, 2009 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Sherk has T-Rex arms and tried to box
That’s why he lost, but Diego doesn’t have anything for B.J..

deigo is losing his power by cutting weight ? is that suppose to be a joke ?? do you even follow mma that closely mate !!!!! he was in the most action packed event in ufc this year, period. i still make more sense than you did, grammar or no grammar. im not trying to flame anybody, its just my opinion, you dont have to agree with it, nor are you obligated to put me down like that.
When you lose weight – from 170 to 155 as he fights at now – and when you are as tall as he is, you can only cut so much fat before you lose some muscle. Ask Wanderlei about the cut for the Franklin fight. Or Couture when he had to cut to LHW. Or Coleman for the fight against Bonnar.
Action packed or no, that has nothing to do with his punching power.
No one said you were flaming, he said a bunch of counterpoints to your opinion – pretty much all of which I agree with.
He wasn’t putting you down, he was telling you that you should use proper grammar – no caps, run on sentences

on a side note i still think penn defeated sherk, because sherk was dumb enough to stand up, and not use his wrestling and GnP, otherwise the outcome would have been very different, people like you and joe rogan try to make penn look like this larger than life legend of the sport, when he is clearly not, you have to have solid competition on a consistent basis to be considered a top tier fighter, say that about machida, silva, fedor and i wont argue then, but penn hasnt been in wars like those guys have. also his bjj is not going to work when the guy on top knows how to defend, like brock did with mir. also guida and stevenson are rough fighters with great chin, they dont ask ref to stop the fight right when they are about to get their ass handed to themselves. also franklin is not a brawler like wandy, he had an intelligent game plan, and didnt give any openings, a clean shot from wandy would have dropped him, if you dont think deigo has punching power go see his fight with guida again. feel free to go over penn/ sherk too, those jabs are almost laughable. they didnt to any damage to sherk, it was the steroids that got to his head.

there was a time when that was true, lately he hasnt done anything to prove that, fight against sherk was a joke, and stevenson got stopped prematurely because of the cut, and gsp mopped the floor with him, , and for your argument penn has never fought anyone like sanchez and florian either. anything can happen in mma. wonder if any of you penn lovers are going to be blogging post ufc 101, its going to be the celebration bitchezz.
Has Marv Marinovic trained any other fighters?
From what I know, S&C can be tailored to different sporting needs, and one sport does not necessarily translate to another.
Just wondering if he has trained any other fighters? Why is he regarded as such a legend?

On Tuesday, Florian acknowledged that he had sent Weintraub a text about greasing. However, Florian said the fighter he was speaking about was Roger Huerta, not GSP: "It had nothing to do with Georges."
Now Kenny is the liar?
