Fedor Emelianenko to Hold Press Conference This Wednesday in Anaheim (L.A. Times Update)

Picture_6_medium From a M-1 Global Press Release:

"Since the cancellation (of "Affliction: Trilogy"), there has been a great deal of speculation regarding Fedor and M-1. On Wednesday, the media and fans will be able to hear what's going on with Fedor from the man himself.

"Of course, it still doesn't imply we are ready to accept any conditions [the UFC] will throw at us. We want to talk to the UFC about having Fedor compete against some of their fighters, but only within the framework of co-promotional efforts with M-1 Global."

"Emelianenko, 30-1, is perceived by many within the industry to be a free agent and it is believed he is being courted by every major MMA promotion in the world."

It seems quite clear that as long as Fedor is managed by Vadim Finkelstein, aka the Russian Don King, that there will be no softening of the demands that have heretofore kept the world's #1 heavyweight MMA fighter out of the world's #1 MMA organization.

*UPDATE*

From the L.A. Times blog:

A long-awaited agreement between the Ultimate Fighting Championship and the man considered the world's best mixed martial arts fighter, Fedor Emelianenko, is expected to be announced by UFC President Dana White on Friday, a source with information about the negotiations told The Times today.

The source, who asked not to be identified because he's not authorized to speak publicly about the dealings, called negotiations between the UFC and Fedor "very civil" just days after Fedor's scheduled Affliction Trilogy fight Saturday against Josh Barnett was canceled.

Co-Promotion

How about they put a tiny M1 logo on the ring. Bruce Buffer will say co-promoted by M1 Global, but the TV broadcast will give it the same treatement as the buffer 360. Also Fedors money will go 10% directly to Fedor and 90% to M1 global for “co-promotion” Finkie as minority owner of M1 will recieve 20% of the M1 “promotion” fee.

Otherwise Fedor and M1 sign a standard UFC contract + he is allowed to fight in some silly russian wrestling sport.

I think the above should work…
Ohh and M1 global needs to post at least 10 craigslist russia postings to promote the fight.

You can also guarantee a lengthy expletive-filled tirade from Brock Lesnar....

…on Fedor if he turns chicken and runs away.

If Fedor does not sign, with Brock waiting and chomping at the bit to fight him, then this would give the impression that he fears Brock and wants no part of him, thereby shattering his reputation…his mystique…..his marketability.

Yet more posturing...

Emelianenko, 30-1, is perceived by many within the industry to be a free agent and it is believed he is being courted by every major MMA promotion in the world.

Let him be courted. All of the other promotions are small time compared to the UFC, especially now. Nobody else can provide the paydays, the supply of credible opponents, or the regular fights that the UFC can.

I say let them do their posturing and go out and be courted. When they realize what’s left out there in the MMA world these days, they can come groveling back. We just watched them bury yet another organization that was short-sighted enough to co-promote with them. Let’s see who’s still stupid enough to bet their organization on this amazing “framework” of theirs.

by Meeaaat on Jul 28, 2009 4:42 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

I don’t see why that little bit of marketing would bother anyone. Agents do that sort of thing all the time in every sport. Pretty much a standard practice to make your client seem as desirable as possible.

Be angry about the co-promotion thing.

by a tommy point on Jul 28, 2009 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not saying agents shouldn’t try to do their best for their clients, they should – although with what’s come out lately, I’m not so sure Vadim is doing things in Fedor’s best interests in the first place.

The issue I take with this is how arrogant they remain after taking part in the sinking of yet another organization. Who’s left to take them in on these terms, and at his price tag? They continue to talk like this, while in reality they have such a feeble amount of bargaining power with the UFC. The UFC doesn’t need them. As a fan, I just hope this is all talk to try to bolster their position, and that they’ve already accepted there isn’t any other organization that comes close to providing what the UFC can.

by P4P is a stupid concept on Jul 28, 2009 4:59 PM EDT reply actions

Fedor is not the #1 heavyweight in the world, Brock Lesnar is. Brock has been the one growing the business, bringing ppv buys, and beating the top fighters in the top company in the world. How Fedor and Lesnar stack up, thats for a different conversation. But for Fedor to be the greatest ever, he needs to fight in the UFC and he needs to fight their top three – Couture, Mir, and Lesnar – who he hasn’t fought yet.

I apologize. I don’t really keep a personal top 10 in every weight class. i was just making the argument that even if you had barnett, after Lesnar dominating Mir and Barnett not fighting you have to put Lesnar 2.

by SES 84 on Jul 29, 2009 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions

my point only being that Lesnar is out there fighting the best and drawing big numbers. Fedor is not. That is why he has to come to the UFC now. Where else can he get the best fights? Overeem or Werdum or Rogers in Strikeforce? Have him come in and fight Couture to establish himself and fulfill promises made to Randy, then have him fight Lesnar after he curbstomps Carwin or Cain.

by mason_beer on Jul 28, 2009 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Fighting the best I can understand but what does drawing big numbers have to do with a ranking?

by Rahson on Jul 28, 2009 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Is he, though?

In the past 12 months:

Who has Brock fought: Mir (Loss), Couture and Mir (again)

Who has Fedor fought: Sylvia, Arlovski

So in both cases, they are fighting former UFC HW champs, or what I consider “top competition”.

But I agree with you…Fedor was fighting 7’ tall freaks and professional fighters like Matt Lindland while Heidenrich Lesnar was fighting The Undertaker. I mean…. Fedor never got in the ring with Triple H…..

by P4P is a stupid concept on Jul 29, 2009 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Again with the co-promotion bullshit

If co-promotion meant putting it on t.v. in Russia then I’m sure that Dana would have no problem. However, logically, in reality or in a business sense the UFC co-promoting does nothing for them, why would they do it. If M-1 was this great business that it’s trying to come off as, then start your own damned promotion, but we all know they wouldn’t last more then a year. Where would that put Fedor then. If Fedor’s management truly wants to keep Fedor the #1, then they have to drop the co-promotion bullshit and work with the UFC on the championship clause, otherwise Fedor is only going to be #1 for a very short time to come, and then he’ll fade away.

We need to stage a week where no one talks about or speaks his name and spread it maybe his managment will think people are fed up with them and get him in the UFC. but as long as we hold on to and talk about every thing Fedor then it doesnt matter

by jks9202 on Jul 28, 2009 5:42 PM EDT reply actions

Possibly

but how long can Fedor fight cans and still be relevant, how long can he not fight in the UFC and be relevant. We can sit here and talk about him until he’s dead, but relevance is a fickle beast.

by proflex on Jul 28, 2009 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Vadim’s master plan is crumbling, and I don’t think he even knows it. The only thing working for Fedor is how fucking good he is. Period. He’s dosen’t have a marketable look or attitude, and the only thing M-1 Global has to ride on is Fedor being #1 Heavyweight in the world. But what happens if Strikeforce and UFC don’t want him? He goes to Japan and fights…who? Cans, and guys who aren’t experienced enough to be a legit threat. That #1 Heavyweight is going to slip away, and then what is Vadim going to bargain with? His best bet is to cash in right now, before Fedor loses, or retires, because I don’t think he’s gotten the pay day he’s been looking for.

Let’s not go that far and not let Finkie off the hook. This is a man that is not out for Fedor’s best interests only, but his company’s best interests as well. If Finkie was a good manager, he would have had Fedor in the UFC a couple years ago and Fedor would be a huge name in America instead of still only having a cult following.

Don’t get me wrong, White has been very important to the history of MMA. He’s a tireless and effective promoter, both of individual bouts, his company, and the sport as a whole. I’d even agree that he’s been the most important figure in the modernization and popularization of North American MMA (and I’d probably extend that to international MMA if current trends continue). I just don’t know if he’s hands down on his own the most important figure ever in MMA. The fact that he’s absolutely in the conversation as such speaks volumes about just how important he is though.

A word on Fedor's management...

I agree with most of you guys that, as a fan, Fedor’s management is annoying. But, it’s not hard to see why Fedor is sticking with the guy – he has received some humongous paydays that he wouldn’t have received had he signed with the UFC after the demise of Pride. From Fedor’s perspective, maybe the promotions have tanked, but Fedor himself sure has walked away with a nice pile o’ cash. At this point, it’s hard to imagine any promotion being able to pay him what the UFC can pay him, of course. But it’s also hard to find fault, from a business perspective, with Fedor’s management and their choices with regards to Fedor’s pocketbook.

But, when you add up all the other bells and whistles that Fedor/M1 got from Affliction. M1 probably stood to make more money/be in a better position to be an actual promoter by taking the Affliction deal.

Now that no one is around to give them all those bells and whistles (and Zuffa probably can throw some more money into the pot) The Zuffa deal is the best one out there.

3. This particular Jesus Camp takes kids and nearly creates a militant Christian militia out of them – give them a gun & they’d use it to “take back America.”

i think if they do a primetime for fedor/brock, i think it will hit 2 mil. if not i think they will still get around the 1.5 mil record. those last 500k+ are hard to get. i also feel that if fedor wins, he will be considered the goat mma hw ever (with no doubters), maybe even the greatest p4p ever (although that gsp dude might have a thing or two to say about that before his career is over) and if he loses he will still be considered the best hw ever for a while, unless brock goes on a 2 or 3year 5-6 fight tear. if brock beats fedor, he will still have alot of workmto do to be considered the best hw ever and if fedor wins, he’s the best automatically, regardles if he ever loses after that. Does Dana's tune regarding Fedor change now?

He sure quieted down about Kimbo, not that we should expect the promoter to bash one of his fighters.

Still, is he going to be saying the same old stuff about Fedor having to “prove” himself in some way? Will he now be the greatest thing ever in Dana’s eyes? Somewhere in between?

If they’re already talking 103, then there must be more info out there than the LA Times blog though.

UFC 104

I predict White will announce a Fedor-Brock match for UFC 104 in LA. It makes perfect sense. Both guys will have plenty of time to rest (Brock coming off a fight, and Fedor coming off a full – yet unfulfilled – camp). If you look at the card, its solid fight-wise but there isn’t much past Dragon-Shogun to promote.

Its also in LA, the second biggest market in America and the top entertainment town in the country. Putting Brock Lesnar and Fedor Emelianenko in Los Angeles would mean amazing business for the UFC.

Mark your calendars . . . if Fedor is signed it will be at UFC 104 that he fights Lesnar.

Out of the SUV, steps two HOT sheriffs officers(chicks)! I swear man, they were both like, really pretty. Anyways, everyone thinks we’re fucked, then I pull out my Medical Marijuana card, and they left us alone! But not before they asked us if we had any extra beers! They didn’t stick around to drink with us, but I thought it was super cool that they asked.

I got mine for the same stuff, insomnia, anxiety and recurring pain from a sports related injury (broken foot from a judo throw gone awry).

Cali’s laws are pretty lax though. Pay $125 and tell em just about anything’s wrong and you’re in.

In Colorado, I would go with the three you posted above, they’re legitimate reasons and MMJ really does help with them.

What’s the process for getting approved in Colorado? Here, you can go into an herb store (usually called a collective/caregiver club) and they have their own Drs. on staff. I think it’s a bit stricter in Colorado. Am I right?

Gotta go pick up my chick, I’ll respond to your response when I get back.

Yeah, you need to get a prescription from a doctor unaffiliated with the clubs. I know of a guy in Denver that hands them out like candy, but my cheap ass was trying to find someone in network. I can think of no better way to spend my unemployment :-D

We’ve got really lax laws on the black market variety (a half pound or less in your car in one bag is a $100 possession ticket), but I could use some new dankness in my life.

In Cali, health code SB-420 (can you believe it? 4 fuckin 20) prevents doctors from being punished in any way for advocating MMJ to their patients, so most Drs. over here don’t have to sweat much, hence the lax recommendation process.

If Colorado has something similar in effect to protect their Drs. why not try your family physician? Couldn’t hurt to try, and it would be free. And how much does Dr. Candyman charge for the rec?

Also, I wish I would have hit you up last year when I flew out to Denver. I spent my entire trip dry as a bone. Next time I’m there, ima need you to hook it up. ;)

People are waiting for confirmation that Nog can indeed move his limbs and react when a ball is thrown at him.

I wish that would’ve happened 3 or 4 years ago

by donkeypunch on Jul 28, 2009 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve never dreamed about a Big Nog vs Handy fight. Though that fight, too, would be relatively easy for Big Nog. I guess I don’t think much of Handy.

I’d like to see Big Nog vs Brock down the line, though, as he’s been a giant killer in the past.

by a tommy point on Jul 28, 2009 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I hate to say it because i like him so much but I think Big Nog is punched out.

Way to much punishment over the years.

by donkeypunch on Jul 28, 2009 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s certainly a possibility.

I tend to think his poor showing against Mir was more due to recovering from staph infection and being hospitalized for 5 days a couple of weeks before the fight.

by a tommy point on Jul 28, 2009 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah but

he wasn’t prepared for Mir’s standup and looked totally lost. Randy looked pretty good against Brock before getting his ear smashed in, so I think Couture’s got a great chance. I’m actually picking him. Couture will also have the motivation of knowing he might get to fight Fedor if he wins.

by mason_beer on Jul 28, 2009 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Couple of weeks before the fight

It’s not as though he was winded or was just missing with what he was trying to do, he simply couldn’t react to anything. He was showing similar signs the Herring and Sylvia fights.

by bignerd on Jul 28, 2009 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Big Nog’s physique was flabbier vs Mir. Enough to see that he wasn’t in the best shape.

Again, it’s possible that he could be all done. This fight should definitely answer that question, unless Handy somehow has completely fallen off a cliff ability-wise.

Well it’s smart to stay away from Pac-Man at this point. He’s the biggest draw in boxing. Also, Mayweather has now twice made things personal with Zuffa and the UFC by calling them out, so it’s not surprising Dana and Co. wanna shove it back in Mayweather’s face where it hurts the most, his pocket.

I don’t see a title shot right off the bat and I don’t see a Fedor vs Brock fight happening outside of Vegas unless its in New York and Madison Square Garden.

IF FEDOR SIGNS…. look for a rematch w/ Heath Herring. Dana will ease Fedor in to the UFC and he doesn’t want to blow his wad on a PPV in Dallas.

by Gunslinger20 on Jul 28, 2009 9:21 PM EDT reply actions

Dana said on ESPN with Cofield that if he signed Fedor he would immediately put him against Brock for the title.

by Sokonojudo on Jul 28, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I know he said that...

I just don’t buy it… at all. Plus, IMO, I think Brock would want longer to train than 2 months for Fedor and the biggest fight in MMA history.

A title fight just seems too soon to me, but I would see Fedor fighting a non title fight just to get use to the cage and the atmosphere.

by Gunslinger20 on Jul 28, 2009 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions

He never said Fedor/Brock would be the main event for UFC 103 (i.e. 2 months). He said that he would want to put Brock against Fedor immediately since Fedor is supposed to be a god #1 HW in the world. He didn’t want to give Fedor any cans or pre-title fights.

Fedor costs 2-3 million a fight. He’s not fighting Heath Herring. Maybe they’ll wait until later, but they really don’t care if it’s Vegas or somewhere else.

by Michael Rome on Jul 28, 2009 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe...

That people are disagreeing with you on Fedor not fighting Lesnar/for the title first.

The whole “not in Dallas, not at UFC 103” is much more open to debate.

by Newbs on Jul 28, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

If thats the case...

then if Fedor fights Brock right off the bat…. I see an ugly win for Brock Lesnar. I would like to think that Fedor would get at least one fight to get acclimated (sp?) with fighting in the cage and fighting in the environment of the UFC.

I know, I just had to give him some shit and point out the irony.

I don’t think they’re actually going to let him kill me... And if he does kills me, book sales will really go up. Boom…win-win, bitch.- Forrest Griffin on Anderson Silva

You realize that Zuffa makes the VAST majority of their money off PPV sales right? People buying PPV’s don’t care if the fight is in Dallas, Las Vegas, or Helsinki.

MSG is over a year away. If Fedor signed yesterday, MSG is not an option.

by Phildo on Jul 28, 2009 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

he tried that with nog

and herring almost kicked his head off. IF fedor signs, looks for Fedor v. Brock right away. Its the best way to make money and gives the rest of he HW division time to shake out after Randy-Nog, Carwin-Cain, and whatever happens on TUF.

by mason_beer on Jul 28, 2009 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe so...

but Herring is available now and healthy and Fedor has said he wants to fight as soon as possible. It would be a good warm up for him and help him get use to things.

Its also just an idea but if Fedor WAS TO GET a warm up fight before taking on Lesnar…. Herring is the best available to put in a fight as soon as possible.

I guess it just comes down to what’s Dana’s real plan for Fedor…. make him out to be the greatest fighter in the world and hype him up with the UFC marketing machine OR make him look like a complete dumbass for dicking around with the UFC for these years.

by Gunslinger20 on Jul 28, 2009 9:41 PM EDT reply actions

It’s a win/win for the UFC to put Fedor in against Lesnar and market him as the mysterious extra-UFC alleged number one fighter in the world. Either way somebody is going over big time.

It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.

Sorta, but it seems as though Affliction wasn’t going to be putting on a 4th show anyway. That leaves the possibility that there was some leverage for Zuffa in having Fedor under contract to Affliction for one last fight, but the details of that might never be clear.

It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.

Brock is too emotional. Fedor has his in check.

Fedor will either calmly decimate or submit Brock. Whichever option is presented to him first.

Brock can bang and get angry. Fedor can do everything.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Even if it does happen to be absurd. =)

by timetosaygoodbye on Jul 29, 2009 5:09 AM EDT reply actions

do you think Fedor is going to get some type of warm up fight? If he is signed, I’d like to see him fight Couture first, but that is not going to happen because of the fight vs Nog. I see him getting a quick fight to introduce him to the ufc fanbase; Maybe a rematch with Heath Herring. The UFC’s goal here has to be make Lesnar vs Fedor the biggest fight in MMA history. So after his “warmup” fight, I see a super hyped leadup to NYE with Lesnar vs Fedor.
