Following Affliction's Demise, Strikeforce Takes Full Advantage
When the news hit the wire last Friday that Affliction was killing their August 1st event, many fans were shocked. Josh Barnett's positive steroid test had damaged the promotion's main event, but names flew around the blogosphere as to who Affliction was likely going to push into a showdown with "The Last Emperor". Despite all the rumors, Affliction decided that it was in its best interests to fold.
Later, we found out that Affliction had been trying to regain footing as a sponsor in the UFC for quite some time. We also found out that Showtime actually had a lot more to do with the decision to nix the event than anyone had ever thought. The true losers were the fighters who not only trained to fight on August 1st, but also trained in order to gain a paycheck to feed their families and continue their quest to become one of the best fighters in their respective weight classes.
Despite Scott Coker being on an Italian vacation while this entire collapse went down stateside, Strikeforce managed to do something that should be praised by MMA fans. Affliction's demise was a tad premature for many fans who were still looking forward to watching a light heavyweight tilt between Gegard Mousasi and Renato "Babalu" Sobral, but Strikeforce managed to come in and save the fight between the proven veteran and the up-and-coming superstar. Not only did Strikeforce save the bout and move it to only 14 days later, but it'll now be for the Strikeforce Light Heavyweight title.
I definitely commend Strikeforce for saving this match-up. Both fighters' hard work and training won't go to waste, and we'll all have a chance to see two very good fighters battle it out in the cage instead of the ring. What about the rest of the roster of fighters?
Strikeforce has also sought out Xtreme Couture fighter Jay Hieron as a potential opponent for Nick Diaz. This is another quality save by Strikeforce if the match-up ends up being signed. Not only does Hieron bring some excitement to the table, but he's a very tough match-up for a Nick Diaz who has begun to turn it on as of late with five-straight wins.
Also, there are rumors circulating regarding UK fighter Paul Daley. Fightlinker made their case regarding him being a easy pick for Strikeforce to pick up, and I'd agree with that assessment. He may not have the greatest ground game on the planet, but he's easily more improved on the floor in almost every fight. He also has devastating knockout power, and he can cross the line between divisional grudge matches for title contention and simple entertainment bouts. He's perfect.
While Strikeforce can't help out every fighter that is swimming in the wake of Affliction's collapse, it's refreshing to see a promotion give fans what they want in saving one match-up and providing a solid opponent for another bout that was likely going to get a lesser replacement opponent than Hieron. Strikeforce mostly looks for fights that can grab some entertainment factor moreso than actual divisional match-ups, but they are slowly building a solid stable of fighters that could produce both quality and entertainment.
We should definitely applaud the good work that Strikeforce has done in grabbing up these bouts and trying to secure some other more entertaining match-ups in the future. One of the major problems many writers had when Strikeforce bought out EliteXC was the fact that Coker wanted to keep his costs down by having limited staff, something he's always had. He's still managed to put on some great shows despite that type of staff, and he's managed to bring in some great stars as well. I look forward to seeing what Strikeforce has in store for us in the future. If only they could have saved Belfort vs. Santiago!

Strikeforce, as a second organization among many others, reminds me of the relationship b/w Sengoku and Dream. Strikeforce is like the former b/c its goal is to put on the best quality fights over the flash and bang of Affliction, EliteXC, etc.

if strikeforce keeps it up, building as a promotion, it wont be long before DW & Co. will come in to smash it.
i say it kindof tongue in cheek, but i like strikeforce, hope they stick around

Strikeforce could remain non-threatening
So far strikeforce really hasnt’ gone after any fighters that the UFC has big interest in. Not to say that won’t ever happen. Dana is competitive enough to eventually smash Strikeforce with coutner programming etc, but at the moment its giving fans exposure to quality MMA. If you enjoy the strikeforce event they you are going to buy a UFC card for sure.

Counter programming will almost always happen because the TV channels are competitors.

Every single show that airs on television is counter programming for every other show on in that time slot. Of course Spike is going to counter CBS on MMA because that is Spike’s baby and they want to be the destination channel for MMA. Now if the UFC did a live show to counter we would have something actually worth talking about.

Generally, it’s like the situation between the NFL and CFL; the CFL has a much more limited market and tends not to compete for NFL prospects, fans of the CFL are NFL fans, and no one takes money from anyone else.

Impossible for Zuffa to put strikeforce out of business because they dont overextend themselves. Even with every top fighter Zuffa can take from them they get a bunch of Recycled former UFC stars Zuffa doesnt want who would still do well on showtime…
There will always be a “strikeforce” in every market.

Having another org building guys and keeping older guys employed also helps the UFC too. Strikeforce can deliver top quality fights and still not bump heads with Zuffa, Dana doesn’t really seem to go after every other organization out there, just the ones who draw his ire for assorted reasons.

mmalogic is correct.
There is always going to be a secondary promotion like Strikeforce. The market, at least at this time, has room for it. It’s better that it’s Scott Coker and Strikeforce then Shaw and EliteXC.
Either way, if there is a fighter that the UFC wants, the UFC is going to get him in the long run. They have more money then Strikeforce, and anything on Showtime has basically zero PPV presence (that includes their boxing). The only exception to this is one fighter who just happens to have a manager who wants to take his meaningless M-1 and make it something bigger at the expense of his fighter. But every fighter loses….. And when that happens, whoever beats him will be getting a nice 7 figure UFC contract.

Really, my comment was deleted? Yikes. Wasn’t even remotely close to being mean or trollish.
Alls I said was SB Nation should add an edit feature and that I am a moron for making a couple of typos in my post. I see people ask for that all the time.

It wasn’t deleted for being mean or trollish, but rather for being a tired complaint but since you’ve complained I’ll address it again. The reason an edit feature doesn’t work is because people would be able to do more than fix typos. They could change their entire comment and screw up the whole thread.

Rothwell would be a good fit in Strikeforce and would really help bolster up their heavyweight division. People talk about all the good heavyweights outside of the UFC, well wouldn’t be great if those guys on the outside were all inside the same organization?

Strikeforce having a division full of these guys interest me much more than having these guys running around all over the place not fighting each other. It’s the same situation as people talk about with the UFC only on a smaller scale, get these guys into one org fighting to build a division and push for a title. For Strikeforce there is also the plus that they have a good relationship with K-1 and would most likely share fighter with Dream in Japan (and probably WVR too). For as much fun as it is seeing a guy like Monson fight 10 crap fights on indian reservations a year it would be so much more enjoyable to see him competing in a real division working towards a belt.

I wonder how long Dana/UFC will sit back and watch strikeforce grow. they have been around a decade themselves and without coming out and saying it have pushed there brand to the next level with bigger stars. Although half there roster would rather be in the UFC.

I agree—It’s a good place for second tier fighters to percolate in front a domestic audience. Should somebody acquit themselves well enough, the UFC can always swoop in and snatch them up.
It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.
by capital L on Jul 28, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not only that…
But more than 80% of the fans showtime and strikeforce create become UFC fans. This all goes to the bottom line without Zuffa spending a nickel. Strikeforce does just slightly better than break even for this.

Why would Dana care? He’s always had a reason for going after the promotions he goes after, it’s not just because they are also in the MMA business. Strikeforce has done nothing to Dana or the UFC and they seem to also have the industries best interest at heart so why would Dana try and crush them?

I am betting on yes. =)

SpikeTV will most certainly have a UFC event on, most likely the best one yet. Spike and CBS are competitors.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
by iiowyn on Jul 28, 2009 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, the only question is whether the counter-program will be a live event or tape delayed one.
by MMASuPreMaCy on Jul 28, 2009 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yea because counter programming is just tv channels doing what they do (every show on tv is counter programming because the goal is to get you to turn off the other guy and watch their channel). The UFC doing a live show is a whole different animal, that’s them jumping in there to compete directly.
by who me on Jul 28, 2009 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The question is, who are they going to have on CBS? The big draws are all signed to the UFC. And the one time EliteXC did a non-Kimbo CBS show, it got poor ratings.
by AlwaysRelaxing on Jul 28, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well they have the option to do them, so, its not out of the question.
I am pretty sure Gina, Le, Rogers, Shields, Diaz, etc would do just fine.

Paul Daley is a better fit for the UFC since they put on UK shows.
If you notice, Strikeforce has not really signed one big fighter yet. Perhaps Mousasi could be considered one, but he has absolutely no name value in the states.
Belfort, Little Nogueira, and a few others make no sense to sign with Strikeforce.

Strikeforce may profit out of Affliction’s demise more by just snagging fighters than if they had merged/absorbed them. They can pick the parts they want that fit in with their product without all the crazy contracts and superfluous partnerships and agreements Affliction had going on. This is good for the fighters, for the fans and good for Strikeforce too. It’s good to see some good coming out of such a bad situation.
