Omaha World Herald coverage of local MMA scene
via www.omaha.com
The Omaha World Herald, which is the only statewide newspaper in Nebraska, recently published on online article covering a local MMA organization called Victory Fighting Championship. What made this somewhat unusual is the article was featured in the Living section, rather than the Sport section.
The article is pretty well written, though makes occasional references to the event as "ultimate fighting." The rest of the article is a moment-by-moment breakdown of two fighters preparing for their event, from the pre-fight rituals down to the emotions of losing.
I wrote the author and he responded by email saying "Doing it was great fun, but the opportunity to do that kind of story on it is extremely rare. I don't think the paper can avoid covering it. It's too huge."
You can view the article here.

The OWH generally blows as a newspaper. But this was nice coverage of what was a really great event. I love the VFC events — it’s a nice intimate setting, generally pretty good production, and some really good talent. I’ve been following Drew Dober’s career there (and through some mutual friends who have trained at Mid America in Omaha) for quite a while, and expect to see that guy fighting in the WEC by the end of the year. Abe Wagner, castmember of the next season of TUF, is also from VFC (heavyweight champ). Ryan Jensen and Jason Brilz are also former VFC fighters, as are Alonzo Martinez and Jake Ellenberger (he’s fought on Bodog). So there’s some real quality fighters there, and a lot of guys have gone on to the UFC or other bigger promotions.
It’s usually hard to find in the online edition without using the search feature and searching “MMA” but the OWH does have a guy who provides pretty consistent mma coverage with notes about upcoming events both locally and nationally:
Krueger’s Submission. I’ve emailed him with errors or thoughts on his stuff before and he’s always been very receptive to information.
