Good for Heiron. I’m not a huge fan, but he got this fight canceled and didn’t get his prior Affliction fight televised. Hope this makes up for it a bit.

If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.

Uhhh.....no. I think I will go with the iron man cardio of Diaz.....

to win a five round fight that he was training for. Heiron will use his wrestling, get the top position and then exhaust himself the first couple of rounds trying to put Diaz away. Too bad for him it won’t work and then in rounds 3-5 he will be hit 250 times to the tune of a TKO or a mercy RNC to end the fight.

Na… just like the KO.

Hieron is tougher fight than Baroni or Daley though. =)

by Nick Thomas on Jul 28, 2009 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont know about Heiron...

But HIERON (the way its supposed to be spelled) is going to lose. Great fight though. Better than Riggs IMO.

Hieron Hieron Hieron!!!! I’ve seen it mispelled 1000 times already, damnit! lol

I disagree. Babalu was already signed to Strikeforce, so he wasn’t going anywhere either.

And a guy like Hieron would have never been picked up by the UFC anyways.

Looking through that fight list

Does anyone else think its a big mistake to have 4 title fights in one show?

Are they all scheduled for 5 rounds? This production could be in for trouble.

by Razreshat on Jul 28, 2009 11:30 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Yes, it is stupid to have so many title fights.

by AlwaysRelaxing on Jul 28, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

why is it stupid? they dont have PPV 3 hour timeslot to worry about.

It’s awesome because it’s on Showtime, so, they will show the entire card even if all fights go 25 minutes.

How many fights?

They can’t be airing the whole card, are they?

"The reason a rabbit outruns a fox is because the rabbit is running for his life and the fox is running for his dinner."

by Blackout612 on Jul 28, 2009 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Not entire card, just 4 title fights this time. Usually they show 5 fights, assuming there are a few 3 rounders in there as well.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jul 28, 2009 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

So, assuming Werdum gets a fight, he’s not going to make air?

"The reason a rabbit outruns a fox is because the rabbit is running for his life and the fox is running for his dinner."

I was assuming that the Babalu fight was replacing the HW fight.

GSP: I pulled my groin.

Greg Jackson: I don't care Georges! HIT HIM WITH YOUR GROIN!

by xFenixKnightx on Jul 28, 2009 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

It is not sure yet if Werdum is fighting or his opponent. We are also not 100% sure if Gil vs Thomson is taking place, so they are trying to iron all that out. It is possible that Werdum could be on the undercard though.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jul 28, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

It obviously has a lot to do with his opponent, but I’m sure he’s getting paid pretty well and they expect him to be a contender in their HW division. He could really use the exposure. And I’ll be fucking deflated if Melendez/Thompson goes up in flames again.

They should do it in this order (but we know they wont) and it would be sweet!

Melendez vs Thompson – 1st Bout
Carano vs Cyborg – 2nd
Diaz vs Hieron – Co Main
Babalu vs Gegard – Main Event

It’s all good though.

GSP: I pulled my groin.

Greg Jackson: I don't care Georges! HIT HIM WITH YOUR GROIN!

by xFenixKnightx on Jul 28, 2009 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Diaz/Hieron will probably be first, followed by Babalu/Gegard, Melendez/Thompson and Gina/Cyborg. The first two are interchangeable. I do prefer your way, though.

Off-topic but...

That’s a hell of a lot of title fights. I hope they all don’t go to decisions. For bums like me who actually have to pay to watch this on PPV, it would suck if the feed would suddenly cut off due to time restrictions.

by dv8shun on Jul 28, 2009 11:34 AM EDT reply actions

Unless I’m really confused, it’s on Showtime, not PPV.

As far as I know

Here in Canada, we have to pay $40 for this on PPV. +$10 if we want the HD feed. Yay!

ok

all of the title fights ARE five 5minute rounds
It is on Showtime, yet I don’t know about Canada
Josh Thomson has stated in the UG (I believe) that he is fighting, because every fighter fights injured, or something to that effect

Small salvage for a disaster of a card

This card is imploding daily.
I hear now Melendez doesn’t want Thomson to fight if he is not 100%. Something tells me that fight is not going to go off.
Riggs out. Overeem out.
Heiron is a nice replacement, should give Diaz a good fight. Think this is going to be a lot closer than most people think.

Joe Riggs has pulled out of his fight with Nick Diaz after suffering a bad reaction to an as of yet undisclosed drug. According to sources close to the fighter, Riggs will be recovering in the hospital for the next couple of weeks and therefore unable to fight Diaz.

Excellent fight and replacement. Hieron is a veteran and has been in there with some of the best in the world, so, this should be an excellent fight. I hope people aren’t saying that Diaz has this fight in the bag, because he really doesn’t. Very even match up.

Agreed

It should be a great scrap and very even but I give Diaz a slight edge because of his exp.

me too. this is the guy i really wanted as a replacement, and actually like this match-up alot more than riggs or daly. gomi is too small and heiron has the most talent of anyone that nick has fought since dare i say….oh in a while. diaz is the favorite, but he wont be able to fight using the same style he did against frank and scott. i think this could be the best fight on the card.

by bdw on Jul 28, 2009 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Not to mention that as a WW, Hieron has a higher ranking than Diaz.
This is a pretty huge fight for the WW class outside of the UFC.

That’s only because Diaz has been fighting out of the division.

Is Showtime blocking off at least 4 hours for this card? With the potential of 4 title matches and maybe a Werdum fight this seems real tough to pull off. I still think the Melendez/Thompson fight won’t happen but I could see Strikeforce filling in some of the Affliction castoffs to fight either Werdum and Melendez in Interim Title Fights which would make for 5 Title Fights.

Awesome? Very much so.

The other Affliction castoffs I could see joining and stepping into fight on the 15th are: Dan Lauzon, Chris Horodecki, Ben Rothwell, and Paul Buentello(since he already is under Strikeforce banner).

by MatteoFC on Jul 28, 2009 2:13 PM EDT reply actions

Paul Buentello is already signed to Strikeforce and Rothwell has a pretty good chance of ending up in Strikeforce as well.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Jul 28, 2009 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

If UFC/Zuffa/WEC have first bids on those contracts I bet they take hordecki & lauzon (since his bro is in the ufc) and they’ll go to the WEC but I would like to see either one fight in Strikeforce on August 15 since I’m going! Preferably Hordecki vs. Melendez if Thomson is punking out of the fight again….

by nochapi on Jul 28, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

why doesnt gomi fight melendez if they need a replacement fighter?

by pandaboy99 on Jul 28, 2009 2:27 PM EDT reply actions

This card is looking pretty out of control. Put Baroni vs. Daley on there and put Buentello/Yvel/Rothwell in there against Werdum and they’re all set.

Tito Ortiz’s apparent return to the UFC will nix plans for a future Diaz vs. Ortiz fight. Diaz had sought out the fight and was prepared to fight Ortiz after Ortiz took on a tune up fight in the organization.
