Quote of the Day: Anderson Silva Talks Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva

"Over Wanderlei there's nothing to say, right? We're fighters and have to talk a little and do our marketing. I respect him as a fighter like the other ones. There are excellent athletes in all the world and as I said before, opportunities have to be taken where they can.
"I think everybody is happy now: the king, the prince and the clown. Life is not easy. The big deal for Wanderlei is to train to do the memorable fights he used to do in PRIDE."
"Vitor Belfort is not a friend of mine. If this fight gets real I will be training for that. I respect him and we even trained together but now it's easy, everybody wants to face me. I'm always asked about who I want to face next and the answer is, I still have too much to go through and have many things to live. I want to fight the bests. Since the beginning of my career it's the same."
Fighters Only translating a BrasilCombate.com.br interview. He also talks about Shogun Rua not deserving his title shot against Lyoto Machida. Anderson also provides a list of fighters he WILL NOT fight: the Nogueira brothers, Lyoto Machida, Ricardo Arona, Paulo Filho, Jose "Pele" Landi-Jons, and Pedro Rizzo.

Yes, because the world is crying out for Anderson Silva vs. Pedro Rizzo.
Remember the last time he was able to string together more than two wins in a row? When my 9-year-old was in the womb?

I love Anderson Silva but...
would someone knock this guy out already or at least mash his face up a little.

I don't want to see Anderson's face mashed up, but
I would like to see him in the cage with someone who believes in their ability to to do it and is actually trying to win.
I just want to see him fight a few legitamate fights. So far he has Henderson and………. yeah.
Silva/Griffin will be good, though. If Silva beats him, everyone is going to say “see? Silva is the greatest fighter in the world because he beat a former LHW champ”. Let’s take care of theis preemptively….Griffin is not THAT good.

I don't think its fair to completely discount everyone he has fought.
No more fair than when it’s done to Fedor.
Just because a champion makes their opponents look bad doesn’t mean those opponents aren’t worthwhile. Cote and Leites were both weak, but at that point Anderson had tore through any other contenders. Some good contenders are building up and Anderson will have some tough challenges after this fight with Forrest.
Yeah..the future looks good
I agree…. going forward, I would really like to see Silva fight Maia, Wandy, Henderson again, and even Bisping, eventhough he looked like crap last time. Looking backwards, though, I don’t remember a single Silva fight that I was like “Oh YES…I can’t wait” except for Henderson. Maybe Franklin 1 (but def. NOT Franklin 2).

Marquardt could easily earn a rematch
If he looks as good against Maia as he has in his last few fights, I’d be very excited for Nate vs Anderson II.
Follow me on Twitter @KidNate
But what about when Maia submits him in the first round? :)

Then you have another genuinely dangerous contender for Anderson.
Personnally, I would have liked for the UFC to find a way to keep both Marquardt and Maia as contenders for Anderson’s next couple fights.
Me too, Nate

then why did he lose to Rashad “the pretender” Evans? Griffin has a lot of heart, but he’s like Chuck in the sense that he likes to block with his face. I don’t consider that a skill.

Nope.
..and Lyoto resolved any doubts I might have had.

If Lyoto is as good as we all think he is
I can see a similar line of discusison involving you commenting on all the “up-and-comers” and “past-their-primers” in the Light Heavy Weight Division.
That was Rashad's first loss
And he has wins over Forrest and Chuck. Rashad is not a pretender.

Discounted. Beating the same guy twice on the downward slope in his career really doesn’t do much for me (Like Fedor destroying Tim Sylvia).
Also, everyone keeps blowing up Nate Marquardt… why? Seriously. I’m browsing his record for notable wins….nope. Don’t see any. Does “king of Pancrase” count? How is beating Nate Marquardt significant? I really want to understand. Someone please explain so i don’t sound like an idiot.
by P4P is a stupid concept on Jul 28, 2009 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions
Explanation:
Watch his last couple of fights.
He lost to Thales on a technicality, but he beat em’ up decisively in that fight.
He absolutely destroyed Kampmann, quick and dirty.
Had a good fight against a tough, always dangerous Wilson Gouveia and finishe him in highlight reel fashon.
Plus he is huge for 185, continually showing more aggression in his fights, and he has Greg Jackson in his corner. Nate Marquardt is the real fuckin’ deal- the MetaRankings have him at #2, and that’s where I have him, as well.
"He hit like a bitch."
that sounds to me like and “up-and-comer” rather than “the man”
by P4P is a stupid concept on Jul 28, 2009 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions
According to your comments though.
No one is “the man” unless they have the belt. Your definitions make is really hard to nearly impossible for anyone to be anything but an “up-and-comer” and “past-their-prime”?
Have you considered that perhaps Anderson Silva makes strong fighters look like “up-and-comer” or “past-their-prime”? Rich Franklin has looked anything but past his prime in his last couple of fights. Perhaps Anderson is just that good when challenged.
Could be.
That is a possibility. Here are my definitions, though:
“Nobody” – No significant wins.
“up-and-comer”- Some flashy wins, but over equal or lesser talent.
“Next big thing”- Up-and-comer who is clearly way ahead of the rest of the division, however has not been granted a title shot yet for some rediculous reason (See: Maia, formerly Machida)
“Big Name”- Anyone who has ever held a title other than DREAM, Pancrase, King of the cage, etc. (basically just Pride/UFC)
“The Man”- Title holder or one who held a title for more than one fight.
“God of War” – Fedor.

I've thought about this a little bit more.....
and I thought of a good illustration. Someone who does not hold a title, but is a very accomplished fighter. Even fighting him at all is a good mark on one’s record, and beating him means something: Dan Henderson.
Titles:
LHW, Middleweight
People he’s fought:
A. Silva, Wandy, Bisping, Franklin (I don’t know if that even counts anymore), Rampage, Belfort, Big Nog, Little Nog, Gracies, Babalu…
So to me, if you want to be considered a top fighter, you need to be fighting Dan Hendersons or better. Fighting Leiteses and Cotes is really kind of degrading. Plus, when Fedor used to fight clowns, people made fun of him, so why is there a double standard for Silva?
by P4P is a stupid concept on Jul 28, 2009 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions
So therefore, i see Silva as being 1-0…. which is one fight better than Rashad Evans.
by P4P is a stupid concept on Jul 28, 2009 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions
SO by your logic..
Since Franklin just beat W.Silva( Wins over Rampage, Jardine, Arona, Sakuraba, and Dan Henderson), Franklin should be the measuring stick for all MW’s?
Even though you just said that your not sure a win over franklin counts anymore….?
your opinion seems to be
a stupid concept…
All you are doing is discounting a ton of a good fighters to make it sound like you know what you are talking about….

He is quite the opposite of an ‘up-and-comer.’
He’s been fighting since 1999- the same year Rodrigo Nogueira started fighting.
"He hit like a bitch."
how far has his “skill set” gotten him? What does he have to show for it?
He gets paid to fight. I’ll give him that. He’s better off than myself.
by P4P is a stupid concept on Jul 28, 2009 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions
His skill set has gotten him one title shot, and after he lays the smash on Maia (and listen, I’m a Maia fan, but I think Nate will smash him up within a couple of rounds), he’s going to get another one.
In this thread alone, you have totally talked down on both Nate Marquardt and Rashad Evans as being not good fighters, and it’s dumb. Just because someone has lost to the champion doesn’t mean they are a ‘pretender’ and have ‘nothing to show for.’ Both Nate and Rashad are top 3-4 guys in their respective divisions, and I’m sure have more to show for in their careers than you do in your own.

Who during that time in the UFC Middleweight division should Anderson have fought that would give him a good test? Obviously now, there is Maia and possibly Belfort.
Also, is Rich Franklin really on the downward slope of his career? I mean, he does not look particularly slower, and during the time he rematched Anderson, there was nothing that really indicated that his career is on the downward slope. There was nothing in his fights against Hamill or Wanderlei that really indicates that his career is going downwards either.
by chrisbboy82 on Jul 28, 2009 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions
the downward slope has to start somewhere. Look at chuck….all skids begin with one loss.
by P4P is a stupid concept on Jul 28, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions
So where is it exactly?
You are making this claim that Franklin is on the downward slope of his career, but you are not providing any real evidence to indicate it. Fighters lose, that is part of the sport, yet it does not necessarily mean that their fighting careers are skidding. There are many counter-examples to your Liddell argument with fighters such as Lesnar (lost to Mir) and GSP (lost to Serra). Even Anderson Silva lost to Ryo Chonan.
agreed
I’d personally like to see that almost as much as I’d like to see fedor vs. Brock.

So I was reading some of the stunningly moronic comments on this YouTube video a minute ago...
woops it was MMAMania, my bad.
I’ve got to learn to avoid the comments section on most of these MMA blogs (BE excluded of course)
He also talks about Shogun Rua not deserving his title shot against Lyoto Machida.

Blockquote fail
I don’t think they’re actually going to let him kill me... And if he does kills me, book sales will really go up. Boom…win-win, bitch.- Forrest Griffin on Anderson Silva

I think Lyoto is going to take care of proving that himself.
I can’t see Shogun doing well against Lyoto style wise.
I think the only person who could beat Lyoto is Anderson Silva. And it would be a very close fight (if they tried).
GSP
I think St. Pierre beats both Lyoto Machida and Anderson Silva personally.

No way in hell
Does GSP beat BOTH of them… They would be the definition of good strikers… and IMO he gets KO’d by both if it were to happen…
I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.
He will have a much harder time keeping people down the higher up he goes. Two weight classes—- naw man. Or at least he would have to come up some radical strategy, as his current strategy of hyper advanced lay’n’pray won’t work against a guy with an extra 35 lbs of muscle. Not to mention his standup would suffer without the sizable reach advantage he has over his opponents at welterweight which would weaken his ability to get takedowns.
GSP is a gorilla armed monster at welterweight. He’s normal sized at middleweight. He’s kinda a long armed shrimp at LHW.
I guess what I’m saying is that the hope that someone can dominate three or more weightclasses is kinda just never going to happen. BJ Penns dream will remain just a dream, at least as long as they keep up the drug testing.
GSP is an amazing fighter and athlete, no doubt, but if he goes up enough weight classes, somebody will just sit on him and punch his face into hamburger (aka “The Lesnar”).
Anderson Ali
“I think everybody is happy now: the king, the prince and the clown. Life is not easy. The big deal for Wanderlei is to train to do the memorable fights he used to do in PRIDE.”
Holy shit those lines are amazing. Not only does Anderson Silva fight like he’s in the Matrix (as described by D.White), but he then is able to turn into fucking Bob Dylan with that ‘king, prince and the clown’ bit (WTF?) just before slyly WRECKING the current incarnation of Wandy in favor of his good ol’ Pride days. Unbelievable.
People out there who are rooting for someone to beat his ass will appreciate what we’ve lost inside of a year and a half, tops. Who else makes destruction look so beautiful?
Anderson Silva is Muhammed Ali, sans radical politics (which would be another awesome development, but I don’t think that’s how he rolls).
by dola on Jul 28, 2009 11:28 AM EDT reply actions 1 recs
Miguel Torres, if he was up around that weight would beat Anderson.
I agree with someone up there that said can someone please smash his face in already because he is getting too cocky. Let’s say you have some success against Silva. What does he do? He goes into “pissed off” mode. Look at his face when he goes into that mode. I genuinely think his opponents get scared shitless. Silva needs to face another fighter in there that is equally or more confident with their skills as to not get intimidated so easily. Someone who will say, “Oh yeah? You’re in pissed off mode now? Well so am I motherfucker!!” lol
GSP: I pulled my groin.
Greg Jackson: I don't care Georges! HIT HIM WITH YOUR GROIN!
