Yeah, Gray. I don’t think any fan is expecting a FOTN from you anytime soon….or ever.

I dont think his fights are that boring. Hes no worse this GSP’s recent efforts. Lots of wrestling but a good mix of everything else as well.

When you dominate everybody, it’s hard to win those things.
Maynard by brutal assault.

He just doesn’t know it yet.

Fuck me, that’s a Guillard/Maynard/Condit parlay if I’ve ever seen one.

I don't think you've 'seen' it..
Guillard and maynard both have a good chance of getting beat.. Especially guillard.. I don’t think he’s good enough to hold Diaz down Ala Stevenson, and I think Diaz is better standing.
Maynard might have a tough time with huerta being bigger and a decent wrestler himself.. He’ll probably still win but it’s not a slamdunk imo.

Yep
I was going to say what you said about Huerta. His line is the one worth gambling on.

Holy blinders, Batman
Maynard has only ever finished one fight (against a bum) and Huerta has only been finished once in 23 fights (five years ago).
Huerta? 15 finishes in 20 career victories.
Sig bet, por favor.

Huerta has fought a lot of bums.
Sig bet that Maynard wins or that he finishes?

personally, i hope Huerta pulls the upset and then decides to continue to fight for the UFC instead of becoming just another pretty face in Hollywood. In that fantasy I also meet Angelina Jolie and shove a mayonnaise sandwich down her skinny ass throat…

I'm not so sure
Kenny couldn’t finish Heurta and Maynard is on a four fight decision streak and has never finished top competition, aside from maybe the Emerson fight where he also KO’d himself. I’m not saying that I don’t expect Maynard to get the win, but I see it going to the judges as is the usual par for the course with Gray.
Kenny spent the entire fight picking Huerta apart from range, a style he’s rarely shown in any of his previous fights. I wouldn’t take away any kind of lesson about Huerta’s durability from that.
by George Lucas on Jul 27, 2009 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions
If you can’t glean anything about his durability from that fight, then from where do you draw an opposing conclusion? That’s more to go on then anything to support his lack of durability, so it’s legitimate.
"The reason a rabbit outruns a fox is because the rabbit is running for his life and the fox is running for his dinner."
I’m not arguing that Huerta isn’t durable. I’m arguing that Huerta doesn’t have the skills to stay in this fight when he can be beaten both standing and on his back.

I’m not arguing that Maynard won’t win, he likely will. I’m arguing that Gray probably won’t finish the fight.

Kenny is a finisher. Plain and simple he is on a 6 fight win streak and Roger is the only W the went to the score cards.
Kenny has never finished a fight that has been spent entirely standing.

I don’t understand how decisions = not being able to win fights. The fact is Maynard WINS fights, as boring as they may have been lately. At best, Huerta is going to get murdered a la Subo, at worst, another decision win. I mean, what does Huerta bring to the table that’s going to stifle Maynard’s wrestling control?
Wut?
He said he’s going home in a body bag. That’s what we’re arguing. Thanks for your concern..

Has Huerta had any interviews? last I saw of him was on Inside MMA when he was cluless as to what UFC was going to do with him. Man, this should be a good one. I have absolutely no clue how this one will go. Huerta by more heart?

Greg Jackson: I don't care Georges! HIT HIM WITH YOUR GROIN!

I don’t think he’s going to gut this out, now that he doesn’t have visions of being a two-weight MMA champion and landing GSP dollars. He’ll win on ability alone, if at all. His heart isn’t in it anymore.

I’m not very happy about it, either (being a Minnesotan and all). I think he’s got the talent to beat Maynard, but his drive is questionable. He wants to be a famous Hollywood ac-tor. I wish he’d see the reality of that pipe-dream and keep his gloves on.

Seriously.
Doesn’t every fighter say that “quote of the day”? It wasn’t even one of those malicious “I want to kick his ass” quotes.
It’s not quote of the week, month or year, and Gray isn’t getting a commemorative pewter figure of Urijah Faber dunking a basketball. Find a better one from today and paste it here.. This doesn’t seem worth arguing.

maynard might win, but he almost certainly won’t finish the fight.
i think i’m kind of ticked off about the “main event” of Melvin vs. Nate. if the fight hits the ground, maybe Melvin will just go ahead and tap. that’s a gimme fight for Nate Diaz if i’ve ever seen one. Melvin’s only hope is his power, and Diaz should be good enough to counter that.
I was frustrated by that. I said, “No, I want someone to hit me.” It’s the macho thing. And he said, “You know what you need? I’m going to help you.” And he hugged me. At first, I said, “Let go of me man.” But he just kept hugging me. It was kind of funny, but I did need a hug. No one ever gave me a hug before. It was what I needed.

MISTAKE
Hey you guys misquoted Grey. He actually said: "(I’m not going to say), ‘I think it’s going to be a bloody, an unbelievable throwdown. We’re going to get the fight of the night check.’ To be honest, I don’t even want it to be close. I want to kick this dude’s ass. That’s the plan."……..

I would be willing to be my sig for THREE YEARS that Maynard won’t finish this fight. I want what you’re smoking. Maynard is very good and has a ton of upside, but he’s still green and has no finishing abilities other than knocking himself out.
Don’t be convenient. He’s finished one fight. I love Maynard and am a defender of wrestlers that dominate and don’t finish (#1 Sherk fan here), but he’s very unlikely to finish this fight.
"The reason a rabbit outruns a fox is because the rabbit is running for his life and the fox is running for his dinner."
One fight...
I mean, I like Maynard just fine. But one fight is not a body of work. Small gloves = anyone on earth has “finishing ability” but you have to actually look at if they’ve been able to prove that ability against top competition reliably. Might he finish Huerta? Sure. Looking at his body of work as a whole though (as well as Roger’s)…probably not.

to go deeper into this. It’s like if I say Paulo Thiago has pretty bad stand-up (which is true) you don’t get to break out the Koscheck KO and go “nope! one fight proves you wrong!” and in both my example and your gif it all comes down to a single punch, not a long body of work proving the other way. Yes, Gray’s hands have gotten better…but still

Luckily I’m not arguing that Maynard will win via 1 punch KO.
I’m saying he has the hands to damage Huerta severely in the stand up (see: Huerta/Florian, Miller/Maynard and Miller/Veres) and Huerta has no bottom game to protect him when he inevitably ends up on his back (see: all of Maynards fights, Huerta/Guida, Huerta/Evans). Based on both Maynard’s and Huerta’s body of work, Huerta has never fought anyone who threatens him like Maynard does, and has no “safe haven” he can go to.
by George Lucas on Jul 27, 2009 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions
No but you’re arguing that he has great hands, which he doesn’t. He has power and he’s a wrestler. If he beats Huerta it will be by laying on him for three rounds, not by KO.
And I like Maynard, I really do. Don’t take this as me slandering him. I just see him for what he is, a wrestler with a ton of potential that has put himself in a great camp to improve.
I’m right there with you. All I’ve argued is that there is no historical basis to suggest he’s going to finish Roger Huerta. I could see getting really aggressive about how his boxing has come along and that you think he’s going to put Jonathan Goulet into a trance, but this is a strange thing to defend so adamantly.
"The reason a rabbit outruns a fox is because the rabbit is running for his life and the fox is running for his dinner."
I’m reading this thread, and I’m horrified that George Lucas is on my side, but I think Maynard is going to leave pieces of Huerta in the mat before the ref pulls him off.

Finish on the ground? Maynard has shown no serious ability to do any guard passing so he’ll have to finish it in Huerta’s guard, which I highly doubt will happen.
It’s well within the realm of possibility. Huerta would have been finished in his guard by Guida if Guida weren’t a spaz with crappy ground and pound.
Knocking himself out aside, Maynard’s strikes on the ground were good enough to TKO Emerson with a body shot, and that was without beating his opponent up on the feet first.

"The reason a rabbit outruns a fox is because the rabbit is running for his life and the fox is running for his dinner."
You know I used to be one of Huertas biggest critics, was libid when he got that magazine cover over alot more worthy guys, and I believed he was overated and being fed cans to appeal to the spanish demographic.
Needless to say his fight with Guida made me a believer, I swore to everyone of my friends Clay was gonna maul him to a lopsided decision if not stop him. My promise was almost kept, but then it was thwarted by Huertas toughness and absolute heart. Huerta is the real deal. Hes an agressive, athletic, decievingly strong lw who throws fast looping bombs and has a good sprawl and decent submissions and sub defense. Even with that being said Maynards top control is just to much and he will cruise to a U.D and probably make it look easy!
i don't know...
I just really feel like if Huerta comes out ready to throw and pressures Maynard he may be able to surprise everyone… I readily admit that I would love for Huerta to be my baby daddy… what can I say? :)

The biggest tragedy is that this is Huerta’s last fight. Even if you don’t like him as a fighter he really has put on some great shows. Vs Garcia, Vs Guida were some of my favorite fights.
What a shame, I hope he goes out with a win but I expect Maynard grinding him out for 3 rounds given how poor Huerta did against Guida’s wrestling.
