Will Tito Ortiz vs. Rich Franklin at UFC 103 Happen?
One of the bigger stories to come out of Friday -- one of the craziest days in MMA history -- was the possibility that Tito Ortiz had been re-signed by the UFC. Dana White provided a little teaser via his Twitter blog welcoming back the former UFC champion. Interestingly enough, Rich Franklin also provided a tweet regarding the match-up with Dan Henderson that was scheduled to be the headliner at UFC 103. His tweet told fans that his fight had been pulled from the UFC website, although many fans are stating it was never up there to begin with.
Where does this leave us? I think you know what I'm getting at. Once I read the tweet from Dana White and listened to his ESPN 1100 interview in which he somewhat backtracked in stating that Tito Ortiz was a "possibility" with a semi-humorous tone as if he knew something we didn't, it didn't take long to put two and two together. Tito Ortiz is likely coming back to the UFC 100% healthy and ready to fight.
Even more interesting was an answer to a fan question during the ESPN 1100 interview in which White basically stated that the Franklin fight wasn't in stone yet, and that the UFC wants to give the fans fights they want to see. This further hints at the fact that UFC has done a little research into the fan reaction to the announcement of the Henderson-Franklin rematch to only find displeasure from much of the fanbase. After all, many fans simply don't want to see a rematch between the two fighters that didn't produce an unbelievable fight the first time around.
Fan speculation is beginning to point at a light heavyweight contest between Tito Ortiz and Rich Franklin as the main headliner at UFC 103. It makes perfect sense that the UFC would be willing to create this match-up. Ortiz is a man that fans either love to hate, or they love to see his abrasive personality come out and create buzz around fights. He's an obvious pay-per-view draw for the UFC, and there are still questions surrounding the potential for Ortiz to actually hang with the top-tier of UFC light heavyweights.
Add to the formula a very popular Rich Franklin who has made the successful move to light heavyweight and remained very competitive within his new division. He not only has a clean image and fan-friendly attitude, but he also has a fighting style that works off the principle of trying to finish opponents in punishing fashion. Both men combined on a major UFC event as a headliner can only bring in major buy rates for the UFC.
Will this match happen? Right now, we really only have the hints coming out of both Franklin's camp and White's mouth. Mysteriously, the Franklin fight seems to be up in the air right now, and White's hint via his tweet regarding Ortiz makes one believe it's a fight that's going to happen. It's definitely a much better bout in terms of interest from fans, and it'll draw both Ortiz lovers and haters along with Franklin's fan base.
We'll surely find out at the July 31st press conference, although White does have a tendency to hype up announcements that end up disappointing many fans. White has mentioned that "a lot of crazy things" will be announced on that date, so don't be surprised if we hear about a Tito Ortiz vs. Rich Franklin main event happening.
Of course, there are other possibilities: Dan Henderson, Mark Coleman, the list goes on and on. Bringing Tito back into the UFC with success is probably a better deal for him in the long run. He's coming off some major back surgery, and September 19th seems like a quick turnaround. Rich is also a very tough opponent, so I'm a bit doubtful that Ortiz takes on Franklin right away. In any case, the rumors are circulating.

I don’t see anything particularly compelling in this proposed fight, and I certainly hope it’s not the headliner. If there was a fight involving Tito that I would like to see, it’s against Babalu. Even Tito vs Hendo would be more compelling. The only question this match up could answer would be: does Tito have anything left? I think one of your partner sites, WKR, takes a good look at this question. My answer? I really don’t care.
There's a WAMMA belt in my Cracker Jacks!
I don’t think it’s overly compelling style-wise. Tito has powerful wrestling ability, but Franklin is very good in all aspects of the sport. Tito vs. Babalu would be phenomenal as well. I think ultimately, you’re right, it would test Tito and answer the question as to whether Tito has anything left.

It would def be loaded with star power...
…which would generate buys. But I dont think this fight is likely due to Tito’s comments regarding his back. If he was just cleared to train after “major surgery” and a long lay off I highly doubt that Ortiz would sign on to fight Franklin in his return.

I don’t know. It depends. If he started training now, he’d have some solid time to get moving. His surgery was some time ago, and he certainly doesn’t look out of shape. It may happen, although UFC 103 may be pushing it.

In retrospect, I think it is a possibility it’ll either be a match-up that is pushed back… or they pit him against someone else. Someone else might be better because Rich is a very tough fight coming back into the UFC. He’ll need some success, and the UFC will want to draw fans from his wins or villian status.

Problem with that is that an easy fight would probably give Tito less money? Unless… Tito vs Shamrock IV!!!

It would at least do SOMETHING for Franklin’s prospects at the weight without stuffing up Hendo’s MW title run.
Also, shoots Tito right back into relevance if he wins.

I don’t see this fight happening yet. Ortiz is coming off back surgery, and despite what he says “i’ll be fighting in june or july”, we have seen that didn’t happen. he said he wants to fight in october now, so i don’t seem him underpromising, and over delivering, its not his style. he’s also stated he wants a tune up match, and even though franklin is a small LHW, i don’t think franklin is who ortiz had in mind.
then there’s the flipside. some say, ortiz vs franklin & hendo vs belfort & crocop vs. dos santos makes for a great first card on ABC… if ABC is thrown in the mix, you can toss any of my speculation out as there would be ALOT more money to entice the big fights for the UFC’s first card on regular tv.
I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08
I think Henderson/Belfort is a more likely headliner for 103, given that I figure Ortiz will want a full training camp. But it is a good fight.

If you look at the timing...
Isn`t it more likely that the death of Affliction made Belfort available earlier than expected, thus making a Hendo/Belfort title eliminator possible??

And it actually does something for the title picture in the MW division.
As opposed to the past couple of fights for Franklin, which have done nothing for his progress in the LHW division or his opponents progress in the MW division.
the initial rumors I saw once Franklin posted his tweet, was that Hendo/Belfort and Ortiz/Franklin were both rumors for the card. Initially I thought…….WOW that would be one heck of a card! Then once thinking about it, it didn’t seem possible with Tito coming off the surgery and this card being like 2 months away.
I would love to see the Belfort/Henderson fight headline this card and the Franklin/Ortiz fight moved to the maincard for Machida/Shogun. That would then really boost that card as well with Carwin/Velazquez already rumored for it as well. Really stacked UFC cards!!!
how about the reverse, franklin/belfort and tito/hendo? that would be awesome as well i think. vitor would definetly stand and trade with rich and vice versa, and i would love to see tito try and outwrestle hendo. both ways work for me. :)
I don’t know if the reverse works as much. Mainly because Franklin seems to be wanting to stay at LHW and Belfort is more attractive to the UFC at middleweight. I think the Belfort/Henderson match makes more sense for the UFC and the middleweight division. And Franklin fighting at MW doesn’t really work any more, since he has lost to Anderson twice.
Why move those guys out of their weight class? Unless you do both fights at 195 which wouldn’t make much sense.

fair enough
i see your points on the wieght class issues, but vitor was gonna fight fedor at hw, so i don’t see it as much a stretch for him to fight rich at lhw and hendo will fight at any weight and a fight with tito would mean a big payday. yes them fighting at 195 does not make much sense as far as title contention goes, and i really wasn’t referring to that when i was thinking of these match-ups, but not too many people complained when wandy/rich did it. plus, whoever thinks vitor would ko rich easier than silva is dillusional imo and hendo/tito would be a great fight b/c tito couldn’t LNP hendo. i actually like it either way, but since no one else does, i lose. :(
Well, of course Vitor could fight at LHW, but if they are bringing him to the UFC it will be as a MW to build towards a title shot so why mess with that? And Hendo could fight at 205 as well but he has won his last 3 fights and is also building towards another title shot at 185 so it doesn’t make a lot of sense to move him back to 205 right now (even though that’s what the UFC seems to want to do at this point). As far as Rich/Wandy goes the main reason for that fight being at 195 is because Wandy was moving down to MW and they thought it might make it easier to not have to cut as much weight his first time around which makes sense.

Tito's back....who cares!
Honestly, I don’t really care that Tito Ortiz is back. He might want to cut some weight and try to state his claim in the MW division. The LHW div. is just too deep, and with way better fighters than the ones that Tito dominated a few years ago.
Does this fight make sense? Sure it does. Cause that will cancel the Hendo/Franklin rematch. That’s not a fight I’d like to see. Hendo won, and that’s that. Sure, it was a razor thin decision, but why put them to fight when nothing is at stake. Hendo is the # 1 contender to fight Anderson Silva again. That’s a fight I’d like to see. Hendo is the only fighter in the UFC to win a round against Silva. Looking at Hendo’s last few fights; He looks dedicated, re-focused, and ready to try Silva one more time.
After all….they gave Franklin a rematch with Silva after he got destroyed in the first fight. Hendo at least dominated Silva in that first round. While Franklin just got manhandled both times he fought Silva.
As for Tito…..I would rather do without seeing his little “I’m burying you underground and padding the dirt” victory dance, but at least he is a draw for the fans. It’s funny cause Hendo’s the oldest of the 3 and he is still cementing his legacy, and a win over Silva would do wonders for his legend. Franklin is floating around in Limbo, fighting catch weight fights with no obvious title shot in the future, and Tito?….He might be a hall of famer, but I don’t see him making a serious run in the UFC right now. Not with all the talent!
So yes…..the Franklin/Ortiz fight makes sense. Two pretty good fighters, past their prime, who are no real threats to the Title Picture. An entertaining fight, with no real stakes.
I care

I have to say I care as well. I don’t like Tito, or pretty much anything he says, but I do like watching him fight. He’s always game and I think him coming back lines up some really great matches in the LHW division.
However, I’d rather see Hendo fight Silva again, so I’m really hoping the Franklin/Henderson fight is off and we get something different.
I love me some Sexyama!
There is just no excitement with Franklin vs Henderson 2

1) Tito can’t make MW. 2) A lot of people still care about him. 3) Franklin beat Hendo in the minds of many, including myself, so I would say that makes him just as relevant as anyone else not named Anderson Silva or Lyoto Machida.
You should be happy Hendo doesn’t have to fight him again because he would probably lose decisively this time.

Tito can’t make a run at the LHW title, but he might be able to beat some LHW contenders. To me that’s compelling.
Tito beat Griffin and Rashad. Those were the last 2 LHW champs. Why can’t Tito be a factor in the division?
" Tell me something Steve, How does a guy from Puerto Rico loose a ball in the Sun? "
I would assume the logic is that
both of those guys were young and growing when Tito beat them as a older fighter who wasn’t really growing as a fighter any longer.
So those victories might not indicate is competitiveness very well.
I actually started watching mma back in the day ’cause I wanted to see Tito and Wand KTFOd. Saw some earlier fights and both of those gents seemed very unsympathetic, this was before I knew anything about mma, and started to watch every fight both had been in hoping to see them shut up.
This made me start following events etc. and now, allthough I don’t care much for tito, I still wanna see him fight, if just for a glimmer of his old combination of arrogance and dominance. Same as when I watch wand now, doesnt feel like an immovable object but the hope of past glory still shining keeps me on edge for their fights.
Better than Henderson again
That is all.

I've been about as big a Tito basher as anyone
and yet I find myself really hoping he has resigned with the UFC.
I want to see him have the opportunity to put his money where his mouth has been ever since he left. Put up or shut up instead of the constant chatter from outside the promotion.
Plus, this might mean Jenna on the sidelines. The Pron crowd has got to bring in some serious PPV buys, right?
One of the main reasons I want to see him come back is because I think he did better against Machida than all the other opponents Machida has faced since he’s been in the UFC.
"Wait a minute. What did you just say? You're predicting $4-a-gallon gas? ... That's interesting. I hadn't heard that." --George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., Feb. 28, 2008
Tito did better, in that he took less damage. That was because anytime he got close to Machida he caged his head very very tightly. Tito fought to not lose, and in the process lost very badly. The triangle was a Hail Mary attempt that came from out of nowhere that nobody expected from Tito. Tito showed nothing proactive in that fight that would make me think he was any threat to Machida at all.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
Well I am not going to go back and forth on why and what happened – I’ll simply state that IMO I think he had a better fight against Machida than the opponents Machida has faced thus far in the UFC.
I also enjoyed Machida’s fight against Nakamura – call me crazy.

Tito Ortiz vs. Mark Coleman
Is the best way for the UFC to maximize their investment dollar when it comes to Ortiz’s large salary.
Coleman is coming off a big win over Bonnar and they could feed him to Tito they same way they fed him to Shogun.
I think this is a good idea. Good tune-up for better competition, and the name-recognition is there. Why not?

I think Franklin smashes him around the ring and I’d definitely pay to see it.

I find it a hell of a lot more compelling than a Hendo-Franklin rematch. And that’s from someone who generally loves rematches.
Hendo/Franklin 2 is a compelling rematch, just not this soon.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
I don’t find it compelling in the least bit. As I’ve argued elsewhere, it does nothing for the title picture in the MW division. If that’s where Hendo is going to stay for awhile, then why have a pointless fight out of the division, with regard to the rankings. Have Hendo fight Belfort or some other MW on the way up. Line up two title shots at MW with that fight and the Maia/Nate winner. Unless the plan is to just jerk Hendo around between divisions for no reason.
After all, this is a sport. Rankings and title shots should be the main concern for the booking of every fight, not just throwing together a main event, faux grudge match pro wrestling style.

Again, just not this soon. The fight left a lot of questions, especially with Rich finishing strong yet ending up losing. I am not saying have them not fight until the rematch, but it happening down the road is still a compelling fight. say for example if one of them wins a title, the way the first one went would lead you to believe Franklin would have won a 5 round fight.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
I think this will be a good fight not just from a stylistic point but also from a rankings perspective. It just seems to be a macthup that makes sense right now. I would also would like to see Tito smash Rashad Evans again. I also want to see Tito versus Shogun if possible.
100% healthy and ready to fight

I'd love to see him back in the cage....
That being said, i dont think with his injuries and time away he can be a title threat. But i do think he can at least hang with some of the top tier LHW’s (Machida, Rampage, Shogun, Rashad, Forrest).
Im a big Shogun fan and although i think he’s ahead of Tito at this point, we saw how an old-ass wrestler like Coleman had Shogun gasping for air. Tito looked FOOLISH against Machida untill the triangle that almost ended it. He beat ’Shad even though it was actually a draw. His addition to the UFC will more than anything just add another big name, competitive guy to fill PPV main events and co-main events.
I think he would have been used in that fashion exactly at 103 if it were just a month or two later. But im still doubtfull he’ll go at it with Rich in Dallas. He may make it to the card, but i dont think it will be against a top guy like Ace.
He said he wanted time to get in fight shape, AND wanted a warm-up fight… I see the UFC giving him one of his wishes, but not both. He and Dana are cool now, but not that cool.
