Kevin Iole Reports That Affliction Will Return to UFC as a Sponsor, Rumored Affliction-Strikeforce Deal off
Matt Bishop of MMA for Real had Kevin Iole on his Lights Out Radio show and broke the news that Affliction will be returning to the UFC as a sponsor.
Iole has updated his earlier post that reported an Affliction - Strikeforce merger to remove any reference to that and update with this instead:
Later on Friday, Affliction opted to get out of the promoting business and, in a joint statement with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, announced it would become a sponsor of the UFC. The fate of the fighters under contract with Affliction is not known yet.
Here's what Iole originally posted only hours ago:
Affliction itself is fighting simply for survival. Several sources have said that Affliction and Strikeforce will have some type of merger with Strikeforce retaining its name. Affliction’s Tom Atencio denied any merger is imminent, and Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker is in Italy on vacation and couldn’t be reached for comment.
However, two independent sources told Yahoo! Sports a deal is either completed or on the verge of completion.
White said an Affliction attorney flew to Las Vegas only days after UFC 100 and offered to fold and turn its contracts over to the UFC if the UFC would remove its ban on its fighters wearing Affliction T-shirts.
"I told him, ‘I hope you idiots stay in business,’ " White said. "We had a record year in 2007. We had a record year in 2008. And we’re going to have an even bigger record year in 2009. I said, ‘I hope you … stay around in 2010 and burn every dollar you have.’ What they do is of no concern to me."
This is a major major news shakeup. Only hours ago it appeared that Scott Coker and Strikeforce were on the verge of dramtically solidifying their position as the undisputed #2 MMA promotion in the U.S. and now it appears that the UFC is further ahead than ever. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker picked the wrong week to go to Italy on vacation.
Iole is also teasing hard that Dana White will make a major announcement on ESPN radio 1100 Las Vegas tonight at 9pm EDT. Speculation is heavy that that announcement might relate to yesterday's Bloody Elbow exclusive news of ESPN officials attending UFC 100.
UPDATE Commentary by Michael Rome:
Fans have already started speculating as to what this will mean for the fighters under contract to Affliction. Make no mistake, this is a bad day for fighters that had an alternative promotion willing to overpay them for their services. One hopes the UFC will back off its draconian ban of any fighter that signed with EA Sports, though it's understandable that they don't want to promote anyone appearing in a rival company's game.
This quote may explain why the earlier Dana White quote was removed. In classic fashion, it looks like the UFC's stance changed in a number of hours. Is there a new deal that came about in the last few hours?
The collapse of Affliction represents a huge shakeup in the MMA industry, and could bring about a number of dream fights. However, any notion that a deal with Fedor Emelianenko is imminent has to be tempered by the reality that the UFC negotiated with his team while he was a free agent for over a year, and never got a deal done.

I really don’t think Zuffa changed their mind in a few hours.
It makes perfect sense (in my head anyway) that Dana told Affliction to go F themselves right after UFC 100 when the initial offer was made, but things changed today after the shenanigans that took place.
Iole could have been working off of old info when he posted earlier.
I added Rome's commentary to this post
Clearly Dana’s stance changed after circumstances changed and Iole’s reporting reflects that shifting reality.

With all the bile MMA fans throw at Iole
He seems to be the only MMA journalist worth a damn.
I’m shocked Affliction even tried to do the third event. But we all knew this would happen sooner or later. I think the promise of Lesnar VS Fedor is going to come that much closer to reality. RIP Affliction the promotion. You’re now a business school case study of how to not run a business.

Yes, he has a pro-UFC streak. Is he any different from the sports writer for the SF 49ers or the writers for the Dallas Cowboys? There are pro-UFC wirters like Iole and there are anti-UFC writers like Ivan Trembow and the MMAPayout crew etc. There’s also Zach Arnold who hates everyone equally. In sports, I’d be hard pressed to find opened minded writers. How open minded are the ESPN PTI crew to MMA? Are they examples of high integrity and honesty?
Furthermore, sports journalists are not exactly highest on the totem poll of journalistic integrity. Neither are they candidates for winning the Pulitzer prize. Let’s not forget that the MMA area for Yahoo Sports is called UFC not MMA. Iole break news that we want to know. Let’s not delude ourselves about neutrality of MMA sports writers. Iole is there to balance out the Ivan Trembow and Loretta Hunts of the MMA news world. I think the anti-UFC mentality has spilled over to the anti-Iole mentality.
There’s no such things as neutrality in sports. Iole’s gotta pick his sides and I see nothing wrong with that.

In fact, for standing out amongst the crowd of crappy reporters, I posit that he is even worse.
It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.
If he’s so crappy, why is he being quoted everywhere? Reporters report and dig up stories. Don’t confuse fair and balance with being a “good” reporter.
He’s crappy because he’s not a particularly dynamic or engaging writer and largely makes his mark in MMA by being close to Dana White (while selling out his objectivity). Him and the Franklin McNeils of the world came from the world of boxing, and it shows.
As for your above post, I agree. Sports journalism, largely, is awful. And I have a particular distaste for most beat writers, PTI/ATH talking heads, etc.

You have got to be fucking kidding me right?, how in the world are you going to try and justify paying 800k for Sylvia for less than a minutes work. Affliction was fool’s gold, it turned guys like Arlovski into money hungry idiots who have ruined a long career in the sport for short term money and now no career.
I’ve said it once and i’ll say it again until i’m blue in the face, the UFC is the right way to run an mma org the dead bodies of mma promotions have proven that fact. All the bitching and crying about how evil Zuffa is becomes laughable after you see idiots like Elite and Afflicion fall apart because they have no clue what they are doing. If anything this should be the final case that shows that they and they alone are the one’s that are going to take this sport to the next level the proof is in the pudding folks.

Whether it was a good way to run a promotion or not, and it obviously wasn’t, has nothing to do with whether it was good for the fighters.
Here’s a clue: over the course of 4 fights, Andrei Arlovski made over 3 million dollars in fight purses, and over 4 million when you include ads. Know what he was making per fight with the UFC? About 100-200k.
He’ll be back with the UFC one day making that same amount. They paid a number of guys more money than they’d make in an entire career fighting with the UFC.

Yeah, for guys like AA, as short sighted as Affliction ended up being, it seemed like a good move. Hindsight is 20/20.

It’s still a pretty good move as far as I can tell. Say Arlovski gets knocked out cold by somebody established like Mir and then somebody raw like Velasquez. Then where is he? Still a shakey fighter, and with far less money.

AA ain’t coming back to the UFC after getting KTFO by Rogers, neither is Sylvia both guys could have been in the UFC for the rest of their careers making good money and now neither have an mma career to speak of.
Both guys should be the perfect warning to anyone who bitches about pay and wants to chase money from idiotically run mma promotions, because only a moron sacrifices long term gain for short term paydays.
I think Arloviski made more money in those fights than he would have had he fought in the UFC and lost twice.

It was good for the fighters in the short term
They would have been much better off, if the promotion grew slowly to represent a durable, sustainable promotion as an alternative to the UFC.
That doesn’t mean it’s a bad day for the fighters.
It sucks for them that there is one less person on the block to overpay them. There’s also one less person around to negotiate with/use to get zuffa to pay them more.
Plus, Zuffa just got a ton of more leverage in these negotiations with the fact that they don’t cancel shows. What’s worth more, a 3 fight 50k deal from Zuffa or a 2 fight 100k deal from the next, next pride?
RIP AFFLICTION SHOWS
I want to know what happens to all the fighters. Will we have an Affliction-Zombie scenario? Do they auction off the contracts to the highest bidder?
not good
I was looking forward to never having to see the goofy t-shirts again. Now they are going to be on every UFC fighter soon.
Brock Lesnar vs. Fedor will be huge. After all the media hype Lesnar received following UFC 100 Dana will easily be able to spin this as the greatest and biggest fight in MMA history. With a little help from Mr. White’s new ESPN buddy this is shaping up to be the greatest day in UFC history.

It’s just a matter of how long it takes Finkie to realize that, or if he can actually find another sucker to give him what he wants.

Multiple sources had indicated to Yahoo! Sports that Affliction was on the verge of a deal with Strikeforce for some sort of merger, but that fell apart in the last 24-48 hours. That’s when talks began anew between White and Affliction. They had spoken earlier in July about such a scenario, but were unable to come to a deal.

In the immediate aftermath, they gained Nog, Henderson, Cro Cop and Wanderlai. That along with the Pride shirts they are selling now is probably worth the 50 mil or whatever they paid. It made the organization stronger. Sure it didn’t get Fedor like everyone hoped, but it made the UFC significantly better and allowed alot of important fights to happen.

-The announcement only stated that Affliction would not be promoting any more fights. It didn’t say that it had sold its video library and rights.
-I’m sure Affliction had to pay some serious dough but their T-Shirt business is surprisingly profitable so they’ll still be around
if mmalogic is saying that they sold their library and rights, that probably means they did it, it just hasn’t been made public yet.

Doesn’t M1 also have rights on Fedor’s film? I’m sure the UFC did buy the library since they have the money and like to collect footage. They have a gigantic film vault at their HQ with Pride, IFL, etc.
It’s probably going to an iffy gray area. Fedor claimed to have the rights to his footage before, but that didn’t stop “Pride Worldwide, LLC” from pulling the youtube footage of his fights from the Affliction: Banned website.
No gray area.
M-1 keeps all of Fedor’s film. Thats why you can go see his fights on their website.

Not sure what any of that has to do with what I’m saying.. I don’t care if they all take a Carnival Cruise together, I’m talking about the implications of all of those fat checks coming across Coker’s desk. “He called me and talked to me and said he was pushing for us,” Reilly said. "You know, Scott has always been very honest and very straightforward with us and very upfront. You know, obviously Scott wants to see this fight happen, and I’m sure he would like to see it happen in Strikeforce; we’d like to see it happen in Strikeforce. But he certainly wasn’t standing in the way. He wasn’t an obstruction to this happening as far as I know and from what Scott told me.
“… I don’t know who exactly said no. Like I said, we had good support to go forward with the fight and encouragement from our employer. We never got the feeling that Strikeforce was actually standing in the way of it happening, per se. I think it’s a lot more complicated than that. It certainly wasn’t one person standing up and saying, ‘No, you can’t do this.’ I think that there was just a lot of complexity to try and put something together in a 48-hour period. And I think that the more people looked at this and realized that trying to rush this forward and trying to do this so fast was wasting a greater potential to really capitalize on two great athletes meeting later down the road.”

I dont understand the part about Brock being
-NJCAA All-American
-1998 NJCAA Heavyweight Champion,
-two-time NCAA All-American,
-two-time Big Ten Conference Champion,
-and the 2000 NCAA heavyweight champion
but im dumb.
It’s simple.
All those are canceled out by being a professional wrestler*
- Unless you are Ken Shamrock, Bobby Lashley, Sakuraba, Mark Coleman, Josh Barnett, or anyone else who has done pro wrestling that isn’t Brock Lesnar.

Less fights? Are you sure – it feels like the UFC has been putting on more fights not less.
Don't believe a word I say, I don't train BJJ. -- TangleBones
Yep..
If the UFC swallows up more of this talent, they’re just going to be putting on more promotions.
"The reason a rabbit outruns a fox is because the rabbit is running for his life and the fox is running for his dinner."
But will they be willing to pay ridicu-cash for those events?
Don't believe a word I say, I don't train BJJ. -- TangleBones
How so?
They’re good at spreading out the payroll. More top tier, high paid fighters just means more shows to have those fighters headline and increased revenue. An impending ABC deal? More Spike shows? The possibilities are endless!
"The reason a rabbit outruns a fox is because the rabbit is running for his life and the fox is running for his dinner."
Big name fighters like Matt Lindland aren’t gonna come cheap after getting paid at Affliction. :-)
(Way off topic: anybody catch Lindland and Ed Herman on TNT’s “Leverage” this week?)
Don't believe a word I say, I don't train BJJ. -- TangleBones
Sure they are
What’s the alternative? Affliction had them on the shelf for months upon months and cancelled two of their four shows. That economic model is not sustainable. There is nowhere else to go and no more secure promotion.

Zuffa is NOT absorbing any Affliction fight contract…
Remember these fighters signed with “Affliction Entertainment” – not “Affliction Clothing” so the fighters have limited leverage but Affliction has leverage to get them signed to a Zuffa contract or give them a hard time.
The fighters Zuffa wants will sign new contracts with Zuffa.
This is just like what Strikeforce did with Elite contracts except Zuffa doesnt have to buy “Affliction MMA” or any assets.
Affliction basically agreed to every Zuffa term and condition Zuffa wanted… Attencio now has a new Uncle called “Dana”.

Zuffa definitely won’t absorb those contracts as is. After all, aren’t Affliction contracts open so fighters can fight in other promotions? If anything, Zuffa will probably negotiate new ones with all the standard restrictions.
I love me some Sexyama!
fighting in other promotions overseas… and even thats dicey because you need permission.
IEvery contract was different and Attencio is as stupid as they come.
Suffice it to say Zuffa now has as much leverage signing the fighters Zuffa wants as Strikeforce had signing the elite fighters… only Zuffa didnt have to buy shit… instead “Uncle Dana and Uncle Lorenzo” have more money to play with.

hmmm
Anybody that had a 205-pound ranking was basically tied up with a fight – they were contracted to fight," Franklin said. "You can run through the 205-pound weight class, and I know on the forums and stuff – I don’t read any of this, I just catch this stuff word of mouth – but I know that there was a thread about who I could possibly fight, and it listed like all of the 205-pound fighters that were contracted with an opponent right now, and basically it left absolutely nobody in the weight class for me. Although the UFC had approached me about fighting in September and possibly headlining that event and all that kind of stuff, they were really scrambling for what they were going to do about a possible opponent.

The only thing is Zuffa wants to sign “FEDOR” NOT “M1”.
Well now that the 3rd event didnt happen and fedors 3rd fight not fulfilled Zuffa has more leverage – but you didnt know that because you dont know shit.

HERE’S ANOTHER INSIGHT:
The ticket sales for this Affliction show and the ppv WITH BARNETT was trending horribly.
I say horribly because showtime was behind it and promoting it. This show was a great indicator on what Showtime can do in terms of ppv. Doesnt look good if strikeforce is planning to use this model.
by mmalogic on Jul 24, 2009 8:16 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
Now we are actually getting somewhere with something useful out of this experience.
I wonder if it is even possible to be a distant number 2 to the UFC through the PPV business model. After all only the UFC, big-time boxing matches, and the WWE seem able to utilize the medium to any effect.
We’ve seen that MMA shows emulating one-off boxing cards have short life-expectancies time and again now, and the UFC has a similar method to the WWE—give away some stuff to ensure that people
buy the big stuff.
Will Strikeforce succeed in “giving away” enough content (premium TV really doesn’t cut it) to drive PPV sales? They haven’t run a CBS show yet.
Alternatively: will Strikeforce or Bellator (or any other promotion, the IFL attempted this after all) succeed in becoming a TV sport with revenues driven by advertising? Could they do it before the UFC does it themselves?
It ends in an armbar or a strangle regardless.
I just got the seating chart from Anaheim last night with sold tickets, was going to do a post on it today and then I woke up to this. They sold 6,000 tickets but at much lower prices. It would have been half full.
